Top Amazon Reviews

  • It has good points but also has serious negatives too
I ordered this chair for hubby, and it replaces a very worn, small armless office chair (often called a secretary's chair) that should've been in the dump a few yrs ago. I was VERY hesitant to buy an office chair online without sitting in it first.....rather like buying clothes online, you never know if you'll hit a home run or suffer a strike-out. For that reason, I tried to give a detailed review for others who are also hesitant. I hope doing so doesn't make it so long that it's of no help to anyone. **ASSEMBLY: Hubby put it together and said it was relatively easy, not the best but far from the worst, with somewhat vague instruction in places. No extra tools were needed, and there are parts stored in a compartment in the chair's back panel. (Be sure to check there. The zipper is on the bottom of the panel.) Hubby added that having plenty of open floor space to spread out always helps when assembling, and this is no exception. Give yourself plenty of room where you can work comfortably. **APPEARANCE & COST: ____With its black leather upholstery and all-black construction, this chair has a sophisticated, executive look suitable for a high-end professional office as well as a casual home office, computer room or game room. ____Having seen it and sat in it now, I would say that $99, which is what I paid, is the most anyone should pay for this chair. ++++NOTE: I saw the same chair on other websites priced at $159, $169 and $189. I would be quite upset if I had paid any of those higher prices for this chair. ++++NEGATIVE: Right after I ordered it, before it even arrived, a $5.00 coupon appeared on the Amazon ad (chair still priced at $99, which is already alot in my budget book). That was a real diddly-hum bummer that always bites me bad when it happens, especially if I'm already disappointed in the purchase! **CONSTRUCTION: The chair looks and feels sturdy. The base is mostly metal, NOT plastic, hallelujah! Metal parts of the base include: ____The 5 metal legs ____The metal "lift stem" (See more on the lift stem under FUNCTION.) ____The metal plate on the seat bottom that attaches the base/lift stem to the body of the chair ____The metal lever that adjusts the seat height ++++NOTE: The "paddle" at the end of that lever (the part the user grabs onto) is plastic, but even if that would break, it shouldn't affect the function of the height-adjusting lever. The parts of the chair that are not metal, that are plastic or some other material include: ____The plastic sleeves that cover the metal "lift stem" (cosmetic) ____The plastic that covers the area where the metal legs attach to the lift stem. (cosmetic) ____The arms are plastic (except for the leather-covered cushioning) (More on the arms in COMFORT section.) ____The seat bottom is some kind of pressed material, although hubby said the screw inserts are metal, which should help keep them from constantly loosening as the chair ages and wears. ____The 5 castors are plastic (See more about the castors under FUNCTION.) ++++NOTE: The castors are 'okay' as far as size but very run-of-the mill. They are the exact same castors as those on the much-cheaper, much-smaller, broken-down chair I mentioned in the opening of this review. This chair is at least twice the size of that chair. So, while the castors should be adequate for the life of this chair and for the weight of average size, adult users, I rate them as "just okay". ____The large plastic tension knob on the seat bottom that controls the "tension" or "stiffness" of the chair's tilt or rocking function (how easily it tilts and rocks). ++++NEGATIVE: This is a large knob (almost 2 1/4" in diameter) that is located under the seat, directly in front of the lift stem. The instructions say to adjust the tension by turning it in the direction of the + or - sign while you are seated in the chair. (The + and - signs aren't visible at all, that I could see, much less while sitting in the chair!) However, there is no way a person who lacks very long arms can reach the knob while seated in the chair! Maybe barely touch it, but adjust it? I quite doubt there are many who can accomplish that. You must get out of the chair and either get down on your knees or try to tilt the chair back, holding it with one hand so it doesn't fall or roll away from you, while turning the knob with the other hand, all the while guessing in which direction to turn it! Then, when you're done guessing, you get back in the chair, try it out and hope that you got it right on the first try.....which you probably didn't. I gave up............... ____As for what the construction underneath the upholstery is like, one can't tell, but, overall, the chair appears to be sturdy and feels as though it should be long lasting if not overly abused.....except, perhaps, the foam in the seat cushion (More about the seat cushioning in COMFORT section). **FUNCTION: ++++NOTE: Our desk measures exactly 28 inches from the floor up to the underside of the desk, meaning there is exactly 28 inches of open vertical space for a chair to slide completely under the desk (up to the chair's back, of course). ____This chair can roll all the way up to AND under the desk whether adjusted to my height (5'3"), which puts the seat (and arms) quite low, or adjusted to hubby's height (5'10"), which raises the chair all the way up, as high as it will go. This allows the user to get as close to the desk as they want or need to be without the arms getting in their way. It also means the chair can be pushed all the way in and out of the way when not in use. That's not necessarily typical for an armed executive-style chair. Those we've had in the past could only go under the desk as far as the arms, which meant shorter users, like me, had to sit on the very edge of the chair in order to reach and work at the desk. It also made the chair intrusive and in-the-way when not in use. ++++POSSIBLE NEGATIVE: While fitting under the desk is good for the reasons mentioned, it also means the arms are likely not very functional. Because they are so low in proportion to desk height, their functionality is limited, especially for those who have the chair height set low. (I have listed this as a negative in the COMFORT section.) In the end, whether an armed chair fitting under the desk is good or not depends upon individual preference. ____Seat height adjustment seems "solid". It lowers easily and smoothly, no jerky motion or quick drop that feels like you're on a scary carnival ride. ++++POSSIBLE NEGATIVE: You must get completely out of the chair in order to raise the height, which is not true of all office chairs. We've had office chairs that have a strong enough lift mechanism to raise the chair height while an average size adult is seated or that requires the seated person to give just a little boost with their legs to lighten their weight a bit while raising the chair's height. This may likely be a mere inconvenience to most, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I immediately noticed the inconvenience of being out of the chair in order to raise it to the correct height, which isn't easy to determine when you're not actually seated. ____It rolls easily, at least on a chair mat, which we have.. ++++NEGATIVE: There are NO LOCKS on the castors ____It swivels easily, 360 degrees ____It has a zipper across the whole bottom of the back panel of the chair. Other than the fact that some of the chair parts were stored inside that panel, I'm not sure what one would use it for. Perhaps, if you wanted to hide something light weight and rather flat, it might be useful for that since the zipper is pretty much undetectable. Maybe we'll discover other ways to utilize it with time? **COMFORT: UPDATE-4/13/21: After using this chair for several wks, I have found that I cannot use it at all, it gives me bad lower-back pain. At first, I thought it was just a coincidence, but after three more sessions in the chair, each causing back pain in the same area, I realized it was THE CHAIR. I believe it has to do with the seat cushioning, which slants slightly toward the center of the chair on the sides while also sloping forward in the front. Hubby hasn't noticed any back pain so it may be the difference in body shape/build? Whatever the problem is, it's one more thing to take into account when considering this chair. (Original review continues directly below.....................) COMFORT (Continued) This is where the chair is a real mixed bag. It has features that we were definitely looking for (rocking), but it lacks some that we wanted and thought were included (ability to lock it in a reclining position). I begin this section with a significant NEGATIVE for me and likely for anyone with short legs (I'm 5'3" with short legs.): ++++NEGATIVE: The chair has a very distinct forward slope! Even though I have the height of the seat adjusted so that my feet are flat on the floor, it still takes a 4 to 4 1/2 inch "riser" under my feet to push against the chair and raise the forward "slope" enough to eliminate the feeling that I'm going to slide right out of it. Hubby, with his longer legs (5' 10"), did notice the sloping but didn't consider it to be enough that it was a problem for him. So, perhaps only shorter people, with short legs, will find this to be a big deal.....I sure did, I absolutely hate it, and it would be packed up and ready to go back for this reason alone if this was a chair I would be using much. (I have my own new desk now and will be getting my own new chair, also, definitely not another of this one!) ____The cushioning is okay for now, there's more in the back than in the seat (no lumbar support at all if you're needing that). The seat cushioning isn't as thick as I had anticipated by looking at the ad pictures. How long the seat will be comfortable depends on the quality of the foam that's been used. My experience tells me it likely isn't high grade foam & has a good chance of flattening out dramatically in a short period, but time will tell for sure. ____The back is high enough that I can comfortably lean my head back and take a rest or short nap. Hubby's head lays on top of the chair back but he said it's still comfortable enough that he could also lean his head back in relative comfort. ____The cushioning on the arms is nice, keeps YOUR arms from getting sore from leaning on the hard plastic ++++NEGATIVE: The arms only adjust with the seat and are quite low, so you can't really use them while typing or otherwise doing desk work. They should adjust independently to be comfortable (or functional). ____The chair is smaller (in width) than a typical executive chair. This is good if you're short on space, like we are, and fine for a medium size adult, like my husband, but it is not made for a large person. ++++NEGATIVE: So, if this chair isn't really suitable for a large person and not a good fit for a short person, it seems to me that the chair has a limited scope of users who would find it to be the best choice for comfort, even at this price point. ____It rocks and tilts "stiffly". Perhaps it will loosen up after more adjustment and/or more use. ++++NEGATIVE, ANOTHER BIG ONE: This chair cannot be locked into any position other than a very straight-up seated position! In other words, you can lock it so it won't rock or tilt at all, but doing so locks it into a straight-up sitting position. That is the ONLY position that can be locked. For some reason, I understood that the chair could be locked in a tilted-back position, one of the main reasons I chose it. The fact that it cannot is a huge disappointment for both of us, and I'm rather surprised it isn't enough to make hubby want to return it. Could it be that the hassle of disassembly, packing, hauling to UPS and paying the return shipping chg is influencing his decision? Very possible, I think. **PARTING THOUGHTS: I would consider carefully when deciding if this is the right chair for you. If it fits you well enough to be comfortable, other reviews indicate that it can be a great choice. If it doesn't fit you, as it doesn't fit me, it likely isn't a good choice, and you may regret buying it. If up to me, I wouldn't keep this chair unless the cost to send it back is exorbitant, which it may be. But again, this is not my chair, it was bought for my husband, and he thinks it's worth keeping. HOWEVER, he has not sat in it for more than a few minutes....hasn't been home enough since getting the chair to really know how well it will fit and work for him. The 3 stars I've given it are just until hubby has a chance to judge it fairly, at which time it may go up, down or stay the same. I will update........... **UPDATE - HUBBY'S FINAL DECISION; After reading my review (and agreeing with it overall) and spending a good number of hours using the chair, hubby's final comment was this, "It's definitely not perfect, but it's okay, and I'll keep it." Knowing what we do, we agreed that neither of us would consider this chair again unless it cost half the $99 we paid. But, hubby says it will do for as long as it holds up, and only time will tell us that. And so it ends as such...... We'll keep the chair, and the chair will keep the agreed-upon 3 star rating that I initially gave it. (Actually, since it's his chair, I agreed with him and his feeling that 3 stars were fair. I'd have given it 2 stars at tops, mostly due to the forward slope of the chair, the questionable seat cushioning, and the inability to lock it into anything other than a straight-up sitting position.) ... show more

  • It actually took 2
Color: 2199-black
It took 2 people to put together! 1 to hold the arm rests and the other to put the bolts in and tighten. I'm 69, dexterity stinks, could be part of the problem! I just got it in today and it takes about 20 min after asking for help lol. Feels good so far.

  • Appropriately Priced
Color: 2199-black
-The chair is comfortable. It places me in a "productive" position---upright, promoting good posture, focused. I don't sink into a pit of filling/stuffing. The seat is perfectly firm for me, just right (I am 6'5", 255lbs). -These armrests are something new to me. They don't have buttons or locking positions you can raise up or down. Instead, they're fixed on a hinge, and they swing up and down, resting wherever you set them (the hinge is intentionally stiff, which allows the armrest to stay exactly where you put it). At first, I thought this was just a cheap way to get around putting buttons in the armrests, but this system has quickly become my preferred design. Without thinking about it, each time I get up, I lift the arms up and out of the way so I can get out of the chair (this also allows the chair to be pushed under the desk without the armrests getting in the way), then when I sit down I automatically push the arms down to the desired height--no buttons to push, no getting stuck with "its almost where I want it, I wish it could go a half Inch lower" because these arms allow picky/anal people like me to put the arms at the EXACT height I want each time. -Ive never been a fan of plastic parts, so when I discovered the legs for this chair are plastic, I was concerned. However, what Ive realized is, usually the legs only break on these chairs AFTER other parts have broken or started to fail (like the hydraulic lift, the padding, etc.) so maybe the plastic legs do last as long as they're actually needed. -Plastic casters. Hate em in general, but with a hard plastic floor mat they should be OK. -Overall, I think the chair is worth the price. For me, $200 is about what I expect to pay for a 5 year desk chair. The quality is just right, the material is appealing and comfortable. The parts will last as long as needed. I don't expect a $200 chair to last more than 5 years. After that point, even a more expensive chair will start to lose its shape, padding will weaken, overall appeal will fade. So far, I'm very satisfied with the purchase. ... show more

  • Great chair!!
Color: 2199-black
I bought this for my 16 yr old son who is a gamer ( he hates that word lol). This chair replaced his gaming chair which looked fancy but was, according to my son, very uncomfortable. My son assembled this chair in no time and told me that it provides better back support and is more comfortable than the other " gaming" chair. So if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer, this might be the chair for you. ... show more

Being 5 foot 1 inch I do wish this chair went down just a bit more lol however my husband and children think it's fun to watch me roll backwards. I do love the cushion on the seat though so it's okay lol

  • Comfy chair but cheap parts- broken
Color: 2199-black
Had the chair for about 3 months, it is very comfortable for me. However I went to lean back in it today as I have done many times before and the plastic support broke. I almost fell out onto the floor. Needless to say, the chair seems nice but using plastic parts for key areas such is this is just poor design quality. Now I have a piece of junk that didn’t last very long. Very disappointed. Update: after this review the seller reached out to me and sent me replacement parts to address this issue. I have updated to 4/5 stars due to great customer support. ... show more

Color: 2199-black
I was surprised the chair was delivered a day early. Assembly was very easy. We use it in a home office The issues we have are. The leather is quite slippery so when sitting you tend to slide down. The casters should be able to lock. You must be careful sitting down because the chair rolls so easily and the first time I missed the chair and fell to the floor.
