Great for homes with cats

I’ve had several of these over the last 13 or so years in a cabinet we’ve modified to hold a litter box. This keeps the air circulating and any wiffy smells are caught before they reach the living space. The litter box is in an area where visitors walk when they come over and people have said they cannot smell that we have cats. About once a month I switch the filter out and vacuum the unit, and every 2-3 years I replace the whole thing because the cat litter dust does build up in it and I don’t want to cause a fire. I also do put tape on the edges to make more of a seal so it’s not sucking the dust into the cracks. If you’re using just for odors you wouldn’t have to do that. It looks fine (though we can’t see it as it’s inside the cabinet). It is not silent but an even low white noise, nothing that bothers me. ... show more

Good.. just not while smoking

Just received this today, and had to post a pic, even though I hadn't used this long enough to even be able to write a completely accurate review.. yet.. The size is not typical of what most would consider it to be.. so it will be quite noticable, and about impossible to hide if you want it to work properly.. and also is quite noisy.. but a 'white noise' kinda 'noisy', which is a good thing. I actually find it relaxing, (not subconsciously aggravating). Which the above are usually a good indication this product is big enough, and powerful enough to serve it's intended purpose effectively. Smells good, and not too over powering of a scent to aggravate the senses.. (unless your highly sensitive to scent.. then you probably shouldn't buy anything labeled as scented, and not expect a reaction.. js ) Will be updating for an over all review soon.. UPDATE: I (46) got brave and tried sneaking a cigarette, thinking nobody would know, so I moved it into my bedroom for a while.. and apparently I was wrong... immediately after I was done, while I'm thinking it smells fine, I was told it smells like a bathroom after someone has been 'in there for an hour' . so..heads up! this product takes time to work after smoking.. unfortunately not during. ... show more

Definitely makes a difference in a small space

I ordered this product to hopefully help with odors in the hallway from someone who vapes and smokes in the house. They generally do this in their room, but of course the odors leak out through the door into the hallway, and I really hate having to walk by and smell it. We already have 2 big air purifiers running in the house, but they are not really located close enough to the door in question to make a big difference very quickly or at all. I was hoping that this product might help that along. Overall, I think it does a pretty good job. I did not want something that generated ozone, so it fit that bill nicely. The scent clip on that came with it smelled nice up close, but I honestly don't really notice the scent in the hallway where this runs. That's really okay because I didn't really want a scent at all. I just used it to use it up. This thing runs pretty quiet. It might be more noticeable in a small room, but in the hallway, where you can hear the A/C running and TVs and other household notice, I sometimes go just to check and make sure it's still running because it is so quiet. The hallway is a pretty small space because the doors of all 3 bedrooms in that hallway are generally closed. This is located at the outlet closest to the door of the smoker, which is right across from a bathroom. So I'd say in general, it's working on a small hallway and a small bathroom altogether. It does a good job of removing odor, but it doesn't do it very quickly. It used to be that when this person smoked or vaped in their room, then opened the door, closed it again, and left for the day, the smell would linger in the hallway for at least a couple of hours. It does not linger nearly as long anymore. If I was to guess, I'd say it clears out the smell in 30 minutes to an hour. I haven't timed it, so I can't really be exact, but it's a heck of a lot faster than before. If they smoke, the smell is a lot more overpowering, and I sometimes have to help it along with some kind of scented spray or something. Don't expect it to work any miracles at this size and power. But it can definitely help make a difference in a small area or right next to something that causes odor (for example, a cat litter box). ... show more

Works But Quickly Turns Noisy

I bought four of these because our house was starting to smell a little bit "doggy" here in the Texas humidity. I plugged one in the kitchen, one in the living room, one in the study and one in our master bedroom, near the dog bed. The house does smell much fresher now. Haven't even had to use the optional scented cartridge. It doesn't completely mask cooking odors but, to be fair, we have an open kitchen and it opens to a big living room with those high Texas ceilings. That's a lot of space for a little filter to cover. One BIG unanticipated benefit of these? My sinus problems which would typically wake me up 2-3 times in the night with one side of my nose completely blocked have disappeared. I am breathing freely in the night, which is an absolute miracle. I haven't breathed freely like that for many, many years. The only difference we've made is to run this little filter in the room. UPDATE: Well, the sinus benefits didn't last long. However, the reduction in pet odor continued since I bought it over a year ago. Unfortunately, what has developed with all of these filters is a high-pitched whine. Other reviewers have mentioned this. It got so bad that I would have to turn off the filters in our bedroom and the ones nearest our bedroom so that I could sleep. I already have tinnitus. I don't need ADDITIONAL noises, thank you very much. Sadly, I'm unplugging all of these filters and will look for some other type of room deodorizer as long as we have our smelly little dog. ... show more

Two humans, two dogs, and zero ventilation in the winter - these little wonders are keeping our apartment smelling wonderful.

A little background: my husband and I live with two large-ish dogs in a one-bedroom basement apartment with no central air and baseboard heat, in the DC area, where winter means the windows and doors stay shut and we have ZERO air turnover until the spring temperatures bless us with the ability to open the apartment up. The whole thing is carpeted and let me tell you, by February or so, the apartment becomes impossible to keep smelling nice - there's just way too many bodies and way too little air circulation. I vacuum like a madwoman, bathe dogs, clean linens, you name it, all on a regular basis, but I'd had enough this year. I got tired of smelling dog. I saw the positive reviews for this unit and thought, shoot, for the price, I may as well give it a shot. It arrived - I assembled it and plugged it in out in the hallway, which is one of the worst offenders in the apartment (lots of traffic, narrow space, and nowhere near any source of fresh air). 15 minutes later and there was a NOTICEABLE difference! Apparently (and this was such a "duh" moment for me) activated carbon filters really are the way to go. I literally went right back on Amazon and bought two more and they've been running 24/7 since - one in the bedroom, one in the hallway, one in the living room. The difference is phenomenal. The filters are not cheap - I anticipate just spending $18/mo on the three-pack, keeping the units running constantly and considering it money well spent. I am so happy coming home now and not getting hit with a wave of stale dog air. On the practical side - the units are not small for plug-ins, but not intrusive by any means. They are designed well with the weight evenly distributed so they rest nicely against the wall and don't slip out even with our older outlets that have lost some of their 'grabbiness' over the years. They are easy to assemble (just unwrap the filter, fit it into the cover and snap the cover on). There's a little dye spot that gradually soaks an indicator strip to give you an idea of the remaining lifespan of the filter. They are audible when running, but not at all bothersome - it's very low-level white noise. They include a scent clip-on, but I found the scent unpleasant and chose not to use them; if I want a scent, I'll use a wax warmer. Honestly, I'm just really impressed with how well these little things work. We put one in each room, and now our poorly-ventilated apartment smells like the doors are open in the spring or fall, even in the middle of winter. 100% worth the cost! ... show more

Wish I knew about this years ago

This product is better than I could have imagined. I have a ridiculous sense of smell and in the summertime I get a smell for my downstairs bathroom that no one else can smell. I've had the toilet reset. I make sure to run the sink that there's water in the pipes, but nothing fixed it. This makes it so much better sometimes I even take off the air freshener part because that could be too much at times and it still works great I wish I knew about this years ago. ... show more
