The opener cuts the can seam leaving no sharp edges plus the cutter never enters the can's contents. Very sanitary and easy to use as well. Be sure to remove the protective plastic covering the cutter before using or opening your first can will not work.

The best can opener I have ever had. I am 64 years old also. I have tried all kinds of can openers from handheld to electric. My grandchildren, when they come over would tear up my handheld ones usually every time they use them. This one has stood up the times of them using it has never broken. In fact, my daughter said hers was broken the other day so I sent mine over for her to use for them. I ordered me a new one. This one has lasted me over a year with no problems. I love how they can has no sharp edges. The price is worth every penny. It is a beautiful can opener and looks nice with all your appliances. It doesn’t take up hardly any space. It’s also very easy to use. Like I said my grandchildren love using it. They are all ages. The magnet on it is very good, it holds the cans very well. My new one works just as good as the old one. I know I looked at the reviews and saw were some people had problems with theirs. They must have just received a bad one for some reason. I would definitely say this is one of the best ones out there for the money. You could buy a high dollar can opener that would do the same job this one does. So don’t pay more pay less. I just ordered my third Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch can opener. It does an excellent job removing the lid... until it doesn't. I found they last for about 8-10 months before metal shards start coming off the cans. I can't manually open cans due to physical disability. So it's worth replacing every ten months. I just hate that I have to do it. Wish it lasted longer. This can opener is excellent. Takes the lid off cleanly, doesn't drop the lid in the food. It holds the can up while doing it, so it's very friendly function-impaired hands. ... show more

Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Electric Automatic Can Opener with Easy Push Down Lever - Purchased several months ago. I needed to replace my old clumsy electric Hamilton Beach can opener. I read the very positive Consumer Reports review and then the "One Star" Amazon reviews. I decided not to purchase this can opener based on the "One Star" Amazon reviews. My husband convinced me that due to the new engineering process Hamilton Beach used in opening cans that this item was probably worth a try. So, I purchased it. It's the best electric can opener I have ever used. It opens regular cans and pop top cans and leaves no sharp edges on the can or the removed tops. It's so simple to use too. Just one effortless push of the handle is all it takes. You can even see very tiny grooves in the top rim of the cans as the can rotates during the opening process. You can actually see where the starting and ending of the process is while it's opening your can. I'm not sure why some reviews had trouble finding the beginning and ending points in the can opening process. It's a great effortless can opener - I love it! ... show more

I had just about given up on owning an electric can opener. Six months seemed to be the length of time any of them would last (cutting blade would get bent, teeth would no longer hold can in position, etc etc). I decided to give this unit a try and it was a great decision. It’s been 3 years and it has worked perfectly. It still holds cans very solidly, never drops a can, leaves a non-sharp edge, easily accommodates cans of different sizes, and isn’t bothered by a bent can. It’s the best!
