A solid, reliable charger. No extra bells and whistles - just on or off. If you know which end of a screw driver to use, you can set the operating current switch. A REALLY heavy duty cable. WARNING! Do NOT alter the ground wiring like that screwball woman reviewer encouraged. Connecting the ground directly to the neutral circuit could cause electrocution if there was a cable/connection issue. A 14-50 outlet should have a neutral for future applications but this charger should have green going to ground - NOT neutral. I am absolutely certain Grizzle knows more about the design of their circuity than this nutcase. I am really amazed that Amazon has not removed that review. ... show more

    • I cannot recommend this charger to anyone.
So to start things off when i received the unit it was wired to a plug however it was wired incorrectly. The plug connection was a 4 prong Nema 6-50 as described but the unit only uses 3 wires there is no where to even connect ground. when it was wired in the factory the wires used were red, black and green the white wire (the neutral wire in the USA) was cut off and because the plug is molded plastic the green wire was connected to the grounding pin (as it should be) was meant to be used as the neutral wire. I had planed on hard wiring this anyway but it was very frustrating to find a device that cost as much as this to be wired incorrectly to prevent out of the box operation. Also setting the amps you want to charge at is not an easy switch. you have to take apart the unit to access Dip switches inside to change the setting. so if you want to charge slower to give your battery a break expect to take additional time taking it apart and putting it back together and the screws used are aluminum so its only a matter of time before they are stripped Upon setting up the device it worked fine for about 3 months as soon as it started to get hot outside now it will not keep charging. Turns out that there is a bad batch of chargers and rather than notifying the customers that have them they just wait until you call to get it fixed. upon calling they will not tell you anything on the phone just to e-mail them and request a support form that you will have to print out scan back in and e-mail them back. i am currently waiting on my replacement unit and i am not thrilled with their level of service on getting me a replacement charger asap. ... show more

The installation was straightforward and took 20 minutes, BUT cleaning off the almost indelible black fingerprints caused by the residue from touching the cable took 30 minutes extra. Whatever substance is on the cable jacket is tough stuff. I started with a little soap and water but that did nothing. I moved to Formula 409, a little progress was made, but it still looked like the cops dusted it for prints. I finally had to use rubbing alcohol and 100% pure elbow grease to get it to ALMOST clean. If I look closely, I can still see residue. Before touching the cable again, I soaked a rag in rubbing alcohol and wiped it down twice. The amazing thing is, the alcohol soaked rag really didn't pull off a lot of visible residue from the cable. If you order the white Grizzl-E, I highly recommend the FIRST thing you do when you open the carton, BEFORE you touch the electronics box, is to wipe down the cable 2-3 times with rubbing alcohol and a rag. Hopefully this will keep you from having to spend time tidying up the scene of the crime. ... show more

I bought this for my ID.4 after reviewing other available chargers. At the time, their smart version was not available, but I don't need it in my area as the rates are constant and there are no discounts for smart charging. It covers just about any circuit you connect it to as it has variable charging rates that can be set via dip switch up to 40A if you've got a 50A circuit. Just remember that you need to set the EVSE to 80% of the circuit's max capacity since it's a sustained load. When I first got my unit, I used a 14-50 to 14-30 adapter, set the EVSE to 24A, and charged with my dryer outlet until I was able to get my 50A circuit installed. Worked great! This is well made, UL certified, and has options for colder climates like mine and longer cables. Compared to the price of other EVSE units, it's a steal! Other there other, cheaper EVSEs? Sure, but they're not UL certified, made in Canada, and staffed by people who actually answer the phone and email. Buy this and you won't regret it. I've spoken with the company and they tell me that there will be an upgrade path for the "dumb" version, as the smart version is the same unit with a daughterboard connected to the mainboard. They'll sell the daughterboard as a plug and play upgrade. ... show more
