  • Great tiller
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
Great machine. Love the fact it is the same 40 Volt battery as the Blower. Great product. Chewed up the weeds and did a good job tilling. Happy with my purchase. Plenty of power

  • Another powerfull Greenworks cordless tool
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
Since I already had the 40-volt 4Ah battery and charger from a Greenworks chainsaw, the tiller only cost $106 so I opted to get one. I was really impressed with the battery because when I bought the chainsaw, I charged the battery up, had it in storage for 4 years, and the battery was still full! I ran it in the chainsaw for a short period to cut down a stump, and it charged right back up! The business end of the tiller is stoutly built: main shaft, tiller head, and tines. Quality steel is used: a forged shaft I think, beefy castings on the housing, and the tines are quite thick. I tested the tiller on a tough area: hard packed soil with a dense network of roots from a flower patch I cut down (9-10 square feet). The roots of this flower was quite thick; they looked like udon noodles around 1/4-3/8" thick and was interwoven throughout the soil. Plus the soil had a lot of gravel and small rocks and it was dry when I attempted to till it. I had to back over some areas a couple of times but the tiller never stalled. It dug up all the roots and made the soil nice and soft. The tiller is not too heavy so it can't be carried easily (30 lbs), but heavy enough to dig into tough soil. Just do more passes. Sure beats swinging a 5 lb pickaxe and having to hoe up the soil afterwards. I am using it to prepare areas for planting vegetables: deweeding weeds and vine networks and final tilling of the soil after adding perlite and soil conditioner. ... show more

  • The Cultivator is good; the packaging and instructions poor
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
First, it is a cultivator, not a tiller. If you are needing to bust up large swaths of sod or rocky root-bound soil, borrow your neighbor's Troy-Bilt rototiller. However, I tested this on soil that had been a former lawn and was surprised at how powerful it was and it did a remarkably good job. You are not going to get too deep with this machine, perhaps 8 to 10 inches. This is sufficient for my needs in working with our relatively sandy soil here. Now the cons: Greenworks still hasn't figured out how to properly package this machine for shipping. Many reviews over the years have said this. My machine came with tears and repair taping on the box. I found one clinch pin on my garage floor where the box had been placed and found that I was missing a felt washer. My local hardware store came to my rescue. The instructions regarding installation of the tines are wrong. I am reasonably handy and figured it out. But purchasers shouldn't have to overcome erroneous instructions. If Greenworks wants us to rely on the pictures, they should be clear and simple (think IKEA pictographs). The instructions should be explicit about use of the extra clinch pins. The reviews showed purchasers had a lot of confusion about positioning of the handle. In response to my question, Greenworks said to install the handle as directed and not upside down as some reviewers suggested. I did that and made sure the wheels (with three different positions) were installed so I could easily lift the handle to get the tines to dig into the soil. That relationship should have been made explicit. In summary, useful tool now that I have overcome the instructions and found a substitute for the missing washer. ... show more

  • Perfect alternative to a 2-cycle tiller for occasional use
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
This tiller works great for amending soil and general garden maintenance. With the big battery, it easily lasts longer than I need for getting ornamental gardens tilled for the spring and for turning compost piles. I owned a 2-cycle Mantis for 20 years (which is a great tiller but for the engine maintenance) and really no longer have demands that require the power or accessories of that great tool. This tiller easily tills garden soil, cutting smaller roots and turning up small rocks. The electric motor actually has more torque than a 2-cycle and tends to get fouled by roots less frequently. ... show more

  • Way better than expected for hard ground
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
I live in AZ, which has very hard packed dirt and can be quite difficult to even dig in. So I had some concerns about some of the reviews, so I was worried it wouldn’t do well here. I can tell you first hand, it has to be user error or something, because this thing had no issues at all with hard dirt/earth. I used it in a decent little sized test area and it showed no signs of struggle and just did its thing. I’m redoing my yard so I wanted this to help with that project and I am not at all disappointed. ... show more

  • Meh, gets the small job done
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
I own the Greenworks 40v mower and trimmer and love those but this doesn't quite hit the quality mark. It is definitely for small jobs, very small jobs. The biggest problem with this is the wheels. It comes with a pin and R-clip cotter pin. Throw those into a baggie and save them for something else or just throw them away. They don't hold the wheel bar well enough for what you're attempting to do. I lost mine halfway through and the wheel went under the shield into the blade. Luckily the shut off on this thing works really well, I had at least 5 rocks and 1 wheel jam it but it stopped and started back up like a charm once they were dislodged. So after the wheels came off, I went into the garage and fastened it with a nut and bolt, now it isn't going anywhere. That's really what should have come with this. I think I might have gotten someone's returned item as well. It seemed to be repackaged or something. Oddly enough the plastic around the bars was underneath all of the fastened parts, so I had to take it all apart to get all of the plastic off of it. Added a few minutes to the total assembly but wasn't hard. On a positive note, the ease of use for pulling the tills off was great. Since I was tearing up a bunch of roots that constantly got wound up around the tills, it was nice to be able to pull them off and put them back on really quickly. Also, this thing is heavier than I expected. I'm 6'2" 180 lbs. and this was a workout keeping it moving and riding the bumpy waves through my mulch/clay/rocks/roots. Well worth it though :) All-in-all, not bad for a beginner's tiller. ... show more

  • surprisingly powerful!
Style: Tool Only Pattern Name: soil tiller cultivator
I bought this little tiller for my son's birthday on the condition that I could borrow it from time to time :-). I just used it today for the first time to till up about 25 sq ft of tough sod that's been there forever (and not even mowed) to start a patch of catnip. First I weed whacked the area, then used a shovel to cut through the roots every 6" or so, then used the tiller. It's very easy to use (I'm a 65 year old female nursing some tendonitis in my elbow and this was so easy it didn't hurt at all). It works best if you pull the tiller backwards, which helps the blades dig down into the soil more. Made about 4 passes of the area, raking out roots and small rocks each time and pulling the roots off the shaft of the blades, before planting the catnip seeds. The whole process took less than an hour and I never ran out of battery. As others have said, the battery can be a little hard to remove because you have to fully depress the button while pulling, which was tough with my arthritis -- but a piece of cake for my husband. For smallish areas or retilling established gardens, this is a great tool. It also folds easily for transport even in a small vehicle. ... show more
