  • Doesn’t recognize on Windows 7 or new Macbook Pro (2017) w/Touchbar
Size: 256GB Style: GNARBOX
Garbage. I bought the 256gig version and tried like hell for over a month to make this work but in the end, I am stuck with $400 worth of junk. First off, what they don’t tell you is the transfer process is S L O W as hell. Even to preview anything on your iPhone really taxes the battery. The battery also gets very hot. And that is an understatement. Lastly, forget about using this in USB mode on a Windows 7 platform. It won’t recognize. I wasted weeks and precious time with Support trying to get it to work and all they did was string me along to miss the 30 day return window. They kept promising me that a firmware update was on the way. BS. And to make matters worse, I just bought a new Macbook Pro (2017) and the lightning port/USB shuts off when trying to connect this device due to high current draw. Keep this in mind when you decide to waste your hard earned money. Look for another solution. Buy more memory cards instead!!!!! ... show more

  • The hype is real, but not on the editing part.
Size: 128GB Style: GNARBOX
Wanted to see what the hype about this product was all about. I was intrigued over the fact that this would help me eliminate bringing a laptop to events or trips. I honestly don't see the benefits of editing anything on my phone other than Instagram photos for instant sharing - but creating a video using the GNARBOX software was very time consuming and VERY slow. I wouldn't advise anyone using this tech for editing a video, editing a photo is pretty good and very fast. Overall I enjoyed using this tech, the connection speed was plenty fast for as much as you spend, and the whole idea of not bringing a laptop on my trip was worth it's weight in gold. As a portable backup system this thing is great and works very well as a onsite backup process. I'll update when I have a chance to use it at more shoots. Update 7/14/18 - I've used this twice now on 2 long trips, and I must say not bringing a laptop to safely export footage from my SD cards is very nice to my back - - and my back thanks me everyday. The speed of the transfer is definitely very slow to what most people are used to by now - - but the idea of not bringing a laptop on my trips is worth it's weight in gold. I honestly just transfer my files while I sleep, whilst it's plugged into the wall from a wall wart. The only issue that I have is that - it sometimes takes a little while to connect to the app. I often times lose about 20% of battery before I can properly connect to the app - - honestly it's sometimes very frustrating, but I guess you can't have it all - - portability AND awesome software. I honestly wouldn't recommend this to anyone - unless they're super lazy like myself OR they have $300 lying around. ... show more

  • If you’re a working video professional, read this!!
Size: 128GB Style: GNARBOX
I’ve honestly never been compelled to write a product review, but the completely abysmal performance of the GNARBOX has forced me to write one. I felt it only fair to warn other working video professionals that this device fundamentally does not work as promised and completely failed on me. In theory this device is the dream — being able to backup cards to external drives in the field, without a computer. Unfortunately, the GNARBOX does not actually do this. Had I not been able to borrow a MacBook, I would’ve been completely screwed not being to backup cards on a weeklong international production. Sure, you could say that it’s my fault for not putting the GNARBOX through its paces prior to the trip, and you would be right. But at $300 I assumed this device would actually work, boy was I mistaken.. I was shooting on a GH5 in 4K, 10-bit, 4:2:2, a data heavy codec, so I was filling my cards fairly quickly. I brought enough media for two days of shooting, without dumping, and planned to dump cards a few times over the week. When it came time to backup, the GNARBOX simply did not work — whenever I tried to initiate a backup, the transfer would get to 30-40% then the device would freeze and reboot, obviously not completing the transfer; there was no way to determine which files successfully transfered / those that didn’t make it. I’m very fortunate that the repeated abrupt ejection of the cards did not corrupt them. Whatever the case, I don’t recommend this device to any working professional who needs a portable backup device. Sure, it’s fine if you’re going skiing and want to backup your GoPro, but I certainly don’t recommend it for paid work. It’s too bad that GNARBOX has all these people on the internet spouting the performance and dependability of its product, when in reality, it’s a completely dud. ... show more
