Style: 16 MM - Deluxe Box Set
As noted, this is my first non-Selkirk paddle. Gamma's ad presentation made me curious, so I researched their pitch and decided to go off the (Selkirk) reservation and give the 16mm "Airbender 16" a try. What motivated me most was the variable weighting/vibration-damping system that this unit offers. I ordered the deluxe box set, which includes the paddle and two (optional) cool zippered pouches containing, respectively, three vibration weights and three end-cap weights. Before experimenting with the weights, I went on court with the unweighted (stock) Airbender. It felt a bit "lightheaded" to me and I netted several serves, which I hardly ever do. I attributed the missed serves to a lack of head weight momentum due to the light feel. So, after play, I inserted the heaviest vibration dampener and end-cap weight. That fixed the light head but gave me some pectoral pain due to the increased weight. Accordingly, like the Three Bears finding their best choice, I opted for the middleweight dampener and end-cap weight, which turned out to be "just right." Thus, no more pec pain. The carbon fiber surface gives me good spin and is an improvement, IMO, over Selkirk's painted surface. Maybe the biggest plus for me is the grip, which feels more accommodating to my large hand than does my Selkirk Vanguard Invikta Power Air's grip. The vinyl grip is effectively tacky and easily cleanable. My order was realized by JustPaddles through Amazon and they delivered the big, fancy box set in ten hours, shipping from Kansas City, MO to Central PA! Amazing delivery. All in all, for me, the Airbender 16 offers a nice control feel with plenty of power when needed. The variable weighting is clever and effective. The price is right, too. In this day of paddles approaching $300, this Gamma product rates as a Best Buy in my book. Gamma also offers the Airbender in 10mm and 13mm for those who prefer a more power-oriented paddle. The 13mm version splits the difference between power and control and, like the 10mm, offers optional variable weighting.

Good paddle, the quality is nice just careful with the top of the paddle as it scrapes and scratches at the top easily. It’s light compared to others but has a nice sweet spot when you’re able to hit it. It is also able to generate a fair amount of spin due to the texture.

Paddle edge guard is brittle. I took the edge guard tape off to add lead tape and the finish (protective layer) just came off with the tape leaving the fiber carbon exposed. The edge guard isn’t a durable rubberish plastic (it’s more of a ceramic type finish) that can take off center shots, scrapes, and bumps as other manufacturers have. It is fragile and shatters - even with quality protective tape applied. On the Gamma site, another player complained about the same thing. It’s true, the paddles edge guard is brittle and does not last. You might want to think this one through. I doubt Gamma will replace or refund blaming me for the issue. Hopefully not. I love the feel of the paddle and the idea you can customize the weight but for $200? And it shatters like a glass house? Who wants that!

Beyond pleased with this paddle. Great spin control/feel and stable on off-center hits. Throat and grip weights are available to customize balance but I find it ideal in its standard configuration.

I am able to customize the damping and the over all swing weight. The paddle (out of the box) was a bit poppy for my play. I increased the but weight (to the heaviest weight) and changed the damper to medium. It improved my shots. I did have to also add a little bit of lead tape by the handle. :). I also like how the paddle looks. Overall, it fits my game (switched from a Diadem 18K Edge).

Love this paddle it’s light and accurate. This paddle is an upgrade from my paddle tech paddle which was also a really good paddle for beginner to intermediate players. Wanting to go up a notch in my play and this so far has given me the results I was looking for power, spin & feel.

EDIT: After a few weeks playing with the 16mm, I had to add some weighted tungsten tape to the 16mm paddle to expand the sweet spot, liven up a couple of deadish spots at the bottom of the paddle and give the top (during a misshit) a bit more pop. Also added edge tape to protect the soft edgeless edges. ………. I play with a 16mm Air Bender (love it!) and thought I’d try the 13mm for a little more juice on serves and drives, but at least for me that but was a mistake and am returning. Get or stay with the 16mm. After just 5 hits/swings with the 13mm, my elbow and shoulder started hurting. Immediately switched back to my 16mm and no more pain even after playing for 3 more hours. The 16mm has great control (spin, placement) and decent pop if you hit the sweet spot. The 16mm is quick and head light, which is why I got it for faster hands near the kitchen, but you’ll need to add weight if you want a heavier swing. Assuming similar on 13mm, but again just 5 swings. ;( Lastly, both paddles look really sharp. I needed to add an over grip to get the handle just right.
