  • I USED TO LOVE THEM, but I had to kill them...
Capacity: 6TB Style: Drive
I used to be a die hard Gdrive consumer ever since I first saw one at the Apple Store. The drives positioned themselves as high-end, a bit more costly, but longer lasting. I used to laugh at the Western Digitals on the shelf thinking that for my purposes, that’s not going to cut it. And I was happy for the better part of the last seven or so years. Then I had FOUR g drives begin to fail starting a year ago, including two less than a few months old. I reformatted and tried to use the drives again, but there would continually be tiny amounts of data loss. I initially thought, “One lemon. So what?” until, very much to my disappointment, it became predictable that I would have trouble with about one in four of them. I intend to send in the last couple of drives and whatever they send me back per warranty, I’m listing on eBay. So then I log into Amazon and look these reviews, like you are doing now - and I see that g-drives are holding steady at around four stars while selected Western Digitals are holding strong at five. I can’t say I’m brand loyal to WD, but I’m sick of returns, replacements, and all the time lost trying not to lose data in the numerous drive switches to date. I’m making an effort to look for affordable SSD drives with a much long lifespan, and in the meantime I prefer to go with WD over G. Never thought I would say that. Thanks for the seven years G-peeps. But alas, it’s time to move on. And best wishes to you, prudent shopper reading this. ... show more

  • I had high hopes with Hitachi the product would be good and well supported
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
I am an owner and user of a few G-Tech drives. Dual drive 1 gig FW800, 1TB FW800 and then I purchased this 4 gig USB 3 drive for very limited backup use. It barely is ever turned on but when it is, it fails 99% of the time. Formatted NTFS it seems OK but upon a backup on Windows 10 using Wndows Backup or Ease US Todo it will begin to work only to throw errors soon after. I am a graphic designer and simply want an image of my system drive and a secondary backup of client archived files. I have been doing this since the last 80's. This drive is completely unreliable. I returned the first drive for replacement within a few months. I had assumed it might be an issue of Windows Backup and thought it just could not be my brand new G-Drive. So began to use the replacement/refurbished drive with the same lousy results. Start a backup which had been run before only to come back and find it had stopped and the error showed it could not communicate with the drive. I decided to try ease US Todo Backup and it did an initial backup of my system successfully. Phew... I figured I was all set. My secondary backup are my docs and files. Simple. Start the backup and after 70% through it fails. Drive has no errors and so appears OK except it will not do a backup. This with a brand new workstation which I felt could use a brand new backup drive. I realize G-Tech has changed hands a couple of times. I had high hopes with Hitachi the product would be good and well supported. This is really lame and insulting to be sent refurbished and probably failed units as replacements. So I wait for my 3rd drive and that is very bad news. 3 strikes and G-Tech is out. ... show more

  • G TECHNOLOGY G DRIVE WILL NOT MOUNT ON MY MBP (High Sierra)
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
I purchased this very nice looking external HD for my vast photo collection and to back up my MacBPro on Time Machine. It worked very nicely for three years; I had almost used up the 4T. Then...suddenly, a few days ago, it stopped being recognized by my Mac. My state of panic was quite extreme. I had photos from 2007 backed up in there, plus myriads of bytes in documents, movies, slideshows, etc. It had been my go-to space saver. After googling and asking around, I did different things: reboot, Disk Utilities, check cables and connections, etc. nothing...nada. I had to spring for tech advice which was costly and installed a piece of software that was able to scan the 4T...took like a day and a half to do that. Now I need another space tank to put what I've recovered into. After spending almost $200, I was hoping this baby was going to be the last one...but not to be. I did quite a bit of research and did not want to go with Toshiba or WD or even (shudder) Seagate...not sure what to do. I'm back at square one again since I can't return it and it's out of warranty. Wish I could get my money back. :( UPDATE: 8/2/2019. I solved the issue by reformating the HD and now it works like a charm. However it is a bit picky when it comes to ejecting it, you have to wait. Otherewise a good piece. ... show more

  • 1/4 of the these failed for us.
Capacity: 4TB Style: Drive
Recent we were shooting a movie and over the course of a few months ordered 8 of these from a few different vendors. 2 of them died. They work initially, and one stopped being able to write after 500-700gb (not all at once). The 2nd was a few months later. We filled it to about 3TB and then it refused to mount. Not liking this at all. ... show more
