Batteries came with, however, they were corroded. Replaced with new ones and seems to work fine. My son,, who has permanent brain damage and is blind, uses this on a daily basis. The last one he had died and was not able to be repaired. So lucky to find this one.

    • EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED
I bought this product in 1993, and used it through October, 2023, when I lost it. I am totally blind and have used it for spelling, definitions, and games especially anagrams. I have missed it since losing it. Although it is probably in my home, somewhere, i miss playing with it! Very useful for stress reduction, and getting my mind distracted when dealing with overwhelming situations. I do hope that this one has been updated since the one I purchased in the early ‘90s. One of the disappointments was that it would only list words with anagrams less than 100. Whereas, the one I purchased for my sighted son did not have this drawback. I am disappointed to see that the price is the same as it was in 1993. This seems ridiculous as technology and prices are so much lower for the nonspeaking version, and voice chips have improved in quality and price significantly in the past 30 years. My new one will not arrive until Sunday, May 19, 2024, and I hope to write an updated review.I am regrettably editing my 5* review to 1*. My first review was based on a unit I purchased 31 years, which still works, if only I could locate it! Unfortunately, the current unit is horrible! Although synthetic speech has immeasurably improved in the past 31 years, as well as dropped in price, the speech in this product is far inferior to that in the product I purchased in July, 1993. This product is a prime example of companies exploiting those with disabilities, in this case those with limited or no vision! This also affects all taxpayers in the U.S. and anywhere that there are government agencies that help provide products for people who are blind. The companies charge outrageous prices for inferior products, that don’t come close to having the features sold to those who can see. Anyone who owns this product, and can see, please try to use it with the screen brightness turned as low as possible, then evaluate it! It is easy to understand what is being said if you can read the screen. In my world, that is cheating! I was so looking forward to receiving this product, as I miss my old one which is missing. It is very useful for children who are blind and/or sighted children with blind parents. It has lots of features and games although less than the one sold without speech for 1/5 the price. Franklin should either discontinue this product, or improve it so that it is equivalent to the non-speaking model. It would not be difficult to add a different speech chip, for significantly less money and more reliability. Even just adding its capabilities onto a smartphone would be a positive step, as all smartphones have superior speech in all languages. I will definitely be sending this unit back.
