Description

The Fluval Multi-Chamber Holding & Breeding Box is ideal for those looking for a convenient way to separate fish from the tank. This is usually done during breeding and as a maturation tank for young fry; but there are other times when fish may need to be isolated. This box does this without taking up space in the tank. Keeping perfect aquatic harmony has never been easier.

  • Has some major flaws
I have used this for a breeder box and a "timeout" box/hospital box for african cichlids. Cons first: If you don't rubberband the lid on, they will jump out. I also put a 5" mbuna in and didn't think I needed the grate because he was too big to get out, wrong. I came into an empty box and the fish back in the tank who slipped through the hole. Just directly hook your pump line to the box, don't use the flow regulator or you will instantly be driven insane by the dripping and air noise it causes. If doesn't flow fast enough to matter anyway. Positives: works great for fry, as it was intended. I've never lost a baby in this box. But, you have to put a sponge in front of the grate that is thick enough to block the open space between the lid and outflow. I lost three fish the first time I used it as they jumped straight out that tiny space....thankfully two ended up back in the main tank and made it. I love that this goes on the outside of the tank and doesn't take up space inside it. Especially if the tank is on the small side, it works great. Since the box is so thick, it doesn't allow for a lid to fit back on the tank proper. With the way my fish jump, I was afraid of losing somebody out and had to come up with a new lid to make it cover the top better. You also have to be super careful about feeding - the flow is slow enough that waste can build up inside quickly. I always removed any extra food quickly. ... show more

  • Good for shrimp and fish!
Great product, especially when it comes to watching over the parents and their offspring. One thing that put me off though was the cost. It seems a bit expensive for a plastic box essentially with some accessories. The water circulation part is also a bit on the loud end, and you'll need to buy an air pump with some additional tubing. ... show more

  • I love these boxes
I scratched my head a bit until I figured out how to put it together but other than that I love it. I like it so much I got one more. Now the pregnant fish and the fry have fresh water from the tank. Also it is great to acclimate new fish but more important shrimp. With a good valve you can control the water flow down to just drips. My favorite so far. ... show more

  • Not for rimless <5mm
Buried in the instructions it says to not use this on any rimless tank with glass less than 5mm. For framed, width must be less than 26mm. Other issues: The air tube is supposed to go through a tiny hole in the box which is too small. I had to use plyers and force it through for a long time to get it to go through. There is no diffusion of the air bubbles going up the tiny tube, which carries the tank water into the box. This leads to big bubbles the size of the tube itself and bits of water in between. It causes a constant sputtering sound. To solve this, you'd have to turn the bubbler down so low that it no longer pushes the water up. The output side is too high up on the box. You basically have to have filled the box to within 1/8" or else it doesn't flow back into the tank. It basically is an overflow protection not anoutput, which means there isn't much circulation going on. You can't regulate the current in the small box. To have enough pressure to pull the water into the box, the bubbler has to be strong enough that my fish which don't like current were being pushed around. Gap between top and bottom section too big. I have small 1" fish about the size of neon tetras and I left them in the bix for an hour only to come back and find one had gotten trapped down below in the "egg" section. Fully assembled, the unit sticks up at least 1/2" above rim so you can't put it in any spot that would normally have been covered by a tank lid. Positives: - Nice clear acrylic -Lid fits nicely (recommend filter foam in the big hole if you are worried about escapees) - sturdy built box, comparable to Lee's hang-over isolation box -mounts outside the tank so it doesn't take up inside space ... show more

  • Title and pics are deceiving!!
Don’t be deceived into believing you’re getting a great price on the THREE chamber breeder box. This is only the single chamber with fry trap. Still a great product and I should have trusted my gut but oh well! Lol

  • Awesome Box, Be Aware of the Out-Flow
I was so excited to receive this item. My cherry shrimp kept having babies in a community tank, but didn't stand a chance of survival due to other fish. The box is built so well, I had really high hopes for it... After spending HOURS of netting microscopic shrimplets, I ended up getting 9 of them. With a smile on my face, I went to bed, only to wake up and see them all GONE! The outflow is very small, but because my shrimplets were tiny, they were sucked in back to their tank where they became fish food👍 Please, don't ever put tiny fish or shrimp in this. Learn from my mistake. ... show more

  • Good for guppies
This is smaller than I expected. A good for a guppy to spit fry in. The fry can get out of the breeder because the grates provided are too wide to block them if the breeder isn't leveled right. This tank is a pain to clean.
