I've tried so many different tanks over the years, this has been the best for my bettas. I've gone up to 5 gallons for a single betta before. The fish were less active because the size filters needed to keep that much water clean caused a strong current that impaired their swimming. They spent most of their time wedged in a plant and only ever swam to eat or surface breathe. Even buying larger tanks supposedly made for bettas didn't help because they had the opposite problem. The current was so weak the water wasn't being pulled through the filter properly and in no time I had water quality problems. Sick fish from dirty water are not happy fish. This tank is a completely different story. I put a bit of filter floss in the intake and output of this filter. The filter is still able to keep the water clean but the current is so mild my bettas can swim. They swim regularly now and seem to rest on the plant leaves instead of using them as an anchor. Weekly partial water changes and routine cleaning are a breeze due to the size. I like that the light and filter use one plug. That means I can use a standard extension cord with the single filter-light plug on one side and the heater plug on the other. It's a space saver that easily fits behind the bookshelf the tank lives on. This also means the light is on the outside of the tank. Which is a great feature! I can't tell you how many times I've had to replace lights that are on the inside of the tank. In no time they get condensation inside them and stop working. This light never gets wet and I suspect it will last the lifetime of the tank as a result. For replacement filters, I use Top Fin Retreat 2.5g cartridges. They come in packs of two. I had them leftover from another tank. They are too tall for the filter out of the box but cutting them in half makes them fit perfectly. So you get four per box instead and it comes out to a dollar a month per tank. The only thing I don't like is there are cut outs near the top of the tank. I think it's supposed to make it easier to remove the lid from the tank. It's already easy to remove the lid so they are not needed. The cut outs lower the water level you can have in the tank and the fish could jump out if it was determined. I put a clear piece of tape over the holes as an easy fix. The tank is perfect for both my desktop and Betta. The filter output is not too strong for the Betta. The Betta is able to rest on the Amazon Sword leaves, as well as in different locations around the tank. (Others here have posted how to reduce the filter output if needed.) I added a Hagan Marina reversible aquarium background. I did not use the adhesive sealer, as I prefer a more subdued background. I added one Amazon Sword, one Marimo moss ball, gravel and a few rocks for the in tank decoration. The pump is essentially silent. You have to really pay attention when all else is quiet to hear it. That is a huge plus for me. The plastic is crystal clear and I love the rounded edges, but it is plastic so I'll need to be careful not to scratch it. The dark rocks are a few from the ones I had in the base of the Betta's old bowl. After moving the Betta to a cup, I stirred around the old water and rocks vigorously, let the silt settle, and then poured the water in the new tank to provide a starter for the beneficial nitrifying bacteria. After a while I'll add some ghost shrimp and possibly five or six Ember Tetras. (I know the Tetras are pushing it, especially since the tank doesn't have an under gravel filter to increase the nitrifying bacteria colony. But my Betta seems to be a woos, so I may try it and pull them if the chemistry goes awry). The only thing negative I have to say about the unit is I wish the cord that goes from the pump to the light was twelve inches longer. That would give me ultimate flexibility in positioning the pump. But I can make it longer if I want and it works fine for the decor I'm using now, so it's not a big deal. I'm not worried about finding a replacement filter. On tiny tanks like this I generally don't use the filter that comes with it or I modify the filter so I replace only half the filter at a time. Of course I have to change out the filter halves more often, but since I often push the capacity of a tank this allows me to keep more of the benefit of the nitrifying bacteria that colonizes the filter. Even if you don't want to go to this trouble, the filter has a sponge pre-filter that comes before the main filter that holds the activated charcoal. Just don't rinse out the sponge at the same time you change the main filter and you'll keep the a solid colony of the beneficial bacteria anyway. UPDATE: A month or two after setup, I added a small albino plecostomus (~1"), two ghost shrimp (~1" each), and one cherry red shrimp (~1/3"). I have not changed my feeding routine of two Betta pellets three times a day, with an occasional third pellet added. All are thriving. The shrimp have all molted at least once. The tank is algae free. The bottom is free of visible detritus. The Amazon Sword put out a rhizome, which I anchored in the opposite back corner. The sprout is now a little more than half the height of the aquarium. I couldn't be more pleased. ... show more

    • Perfect for my Sea Monkeys

I got this to upgrade my sea monkeys from their original Ocean Zoo tank. It's the perfect size, and they are thriving. Took off one star because the lid is hard plastic, and not able to cut notches or anything in it for the bubbler's air line tube or the heater cord. I tried, and it cracked across the lid, not just the edge. So the lid just sits up in the back on top of the wire & tube. Otherwise, the tank looks great, and my sea monkeys love it. Very disappointed! Very cheaply made. Underground filter extremely hard to set up as parts are poorly & cheaply made. I gave up on it. I put my own sponge filter in tank. Battery opperated light I don’t like, should be a plug in and battery compartment difficult to open. Takes 4 batteries which is also Rediculous! Way overpriced. I feel robbed. I salvaged tank which i put 1 male blue Gorami in without seperations because it seperations make for a inhumane small space for any fish. ... show more

The Bad: This is really too small for 3 betta. I’m not one of those 2 gallons per fish nazi’s, but with this small a tank water waste builds up fast. What I can tell you is after having 3 fish in it for 2 months all 3 have fin rot. It’s cold now and this can’t fit a heater in it. I never used the tiny filter so won’t comment on that. The drainage at the bottom is a neat idea, but the hole is so small waste does not go through it. So I have 2 months of uneaten food and fish poop adding to the fish rot. In order to remove the waste, I will have to remove the fish, since the waste is under the gravel. To really give this a fair shake I’ll try using the included filter first, but I really think a better way to House 3 fish in one tank is a 5 or 10 gallon tank with cheap egg crate dividers, then add an air pump and 2 of the $2.25 foam tank filters from Amazon. Good: This is a super cute tank. Love the lights. Love the glow in the dark trees. Bottom drainage is in theory a wonderful addition. Doesn’t take much much room. Can make the fish flare by removing divider covers. There is ALOT done right here. But the small size and build up of fish waste is killing my fish. Update - I plugged the filter in (it seems to be a bad design? the top is only half under water even when the tank is completely filled up. Never seen a filter where the filter is mostly in the air, not in the water). I ordered the smallest heater from amazon for $8. There are no easy steps to fix that too small drainage hole though. I ordered some Melafix and I’m going to do everything possible to make this tank work for 3 fish to really give it a fair chance, but the drainage hole is a really big problem because the tank is too small to keep the fish in while using a normal fish siphon. Maybe I could rig a mini siphon, but the poo is under the grate, so even that can’t reach it now. I should also add the trees are hard sharp plastic and seem to be cutting into my fishes fins and bodies. One of them has a couple of pieces of fin on it, which was likely cut off the fish by the sharp tree edge. ... show more

Wow is this thing tiny! I bought this Betta Bowl to house my Betta and his tank buddies while I clean and to use as a makeshift hospital. I have to admit I was expecting it to be a bit...bigger. But that's on me as there was a size chart in the images and I needed something cheap and fast to put my fish in while I clean the tank out. I threw out the plants and rocks so I can't comment much on them. The rocks were not enough and the plants felt too rough to put in such a small space with a fish that has soft fins. That said, I'm a bit horrified that Penn-Plax would ever market this as suitable for TWO betta, let alone one. Please reconsider if you are buying this as the longterm home for a betta. They are smart and inquisitive fish that are often mistreated. Yes, they can survive in a gallon of water, but thats like saying you can survive in an empty 5x5' bedroom. It's possible, but you'renot gonna like it. For your betta to thrive, they need at least 2.5 gallons. 5 being the minimum if they have one or two tankmates. Do yourself and the fish a favor and spend the extra 5 bucks for a glass 5.5+ gallon at the local pet store. ... show more

I saw a lot of bad reviews for this tank. However I wanted something cheep and small so I bought it anyway. I’m actually really happy with the tank itself. The “filter”, the way it works is it uses bubbles to push/suck water up through the bottom of the the tube to the top where the water is then pushed through the little “filter” back into the tank. The problem is it’s just pushing the water through what appears to be just activated carbon beads. So it will potentially pull out any heavy metals or other bad invisible problems in the water but it does not catch visible particles or any at all from what I can see. I also had to cut the bottom of the tube for the filter to fit underneath the water level (which was as full as it could go). And yes it does NOT come with a pump or airline tubing but it says it doesn’t right on the page so idk why people are so upset about that. The light works great I don’t know how long the battery’s will last if you want to keep the light on all day every day but it’s easy to change the batteries (4AAA). Over all I think this is a great little cheep tank for the price. Would especially recommend for kids who are just starting out with fish :) Update on filter. So I figured out you can take out the carbon beads and fill the chamber with a small filter sponge and it works tons better! Just a thought 🤷🏽♀️ ... show more
