  • Great chair so far!
I just finished assembling the chair, this review being the first task taken upon it. So I will update this review if I experience issues down the line. That being said, this chair gives a great first impression. If you look at the item weight in the description, it says that the ship weight is 67 pounds! That's far heavier than most desk chairs, and I've assembled quite a few in my day. It's heavy primarily because it has a lot of metal components, and they're all very heavy gauge steel. I mean surprisingly thick; Perhaps twice as much so as your average chair. The base is metal, and very heavy. Same with the L-shaped substructure of the arms. The arms also attach to the seat with 4 bolts, not the 3 (or at worst 2) of most chairs. The description doesn't note this, but the arms are adjustable for height, width, and angle. I researched a bunch of "big & tall" chairs on Amazon, and strangely they mostly had seats that were the same dimensions as my regular ol' chair at work. The Hercules has a much wider and deeper seat than average. The back is wider and taller as well. I'm 6'4", and the seat actually touches the back of my knees when my butt is as far back as it can go. That's a first for me. I'm not particularly wide, but I do sometimes like to sit cross legged or in weird positions, and this chair suits that nicely. There are, however, three things that feel of "average" (or below) weight and quality: - The gas cylinder (for height adjustment) seems to be a generic and universal model. That makes it easy to replace, but if you're on the heavy side you probably know those can be the first things to go. - The back, while extra wide and tall, is mostly plastic and nothing more robust than you'll find elsewhere. - The wheels are a bit embarrassing. They are lighter and feel flimsier than those on an off-brand hundred-dollar chair. I'm sure they'll be fine, but if I was near the weight limit I'd be nervous. I have three side notes which don't effect my overall opinion of the product, but may be of interest: - At its minimum height this chair is still pretty high. I kept my old chair maybe 2-3 inches above its minimum. The Hercules is, at minimum, higher than that. I'm assuming that as the cushion breaks in it'll be less of an issue, but for now it'll take some getting used to. If you're on the "big" side of the equation, be aware that with a lower desk (or keyboard tray) your legs may not fit under it. However, the top of the base is 6.5" from the floor. My old chair's base is 5.5" high. So I could lose an inch by swapping them. Just something to note if you love the chair but it's a hair too tall for your taste. - Along with this chair I purchased Office Chair Caster Wheels (Set of 5) - Heavy Duty & Safe for All Floors Including Hardwood - Perfect Replacement for Desk Floor Mat - Rollerblade Style w/ Universal Fit , which fit perfectly, seem well made, and roll very smoothly. However, they add about 1.5" to the overall height of the chair. Keep that in mind before you go down the same road. I'll be returning them. (The stock wheels are only 2" high if you're researching alternatives.) - The particular chair I received had clearly been assembled, disassembled, and then returned by someone else. The packaging of all the parts was taped back together (sloppily), and the powder coat on the steel parts was marred where bolts had previously been attached and removed. Not a huge issue. I'm not returning it, but it's irksome. (Again, this isn't effecting my overall review as that's a seller issue and not a product issue. But I'd be curious to see if this is reported by others.) ... show more

  • The WORST customer service
I am 6'6" tall and weigh 380 lbs. Bought this chair for my home office. Within two (2) months, the webbing on the back came unstapled with the staples falling onto the floor. After another couple of months, the cylinder began to fail - I would sit in it and after anywhere from 15-30 minutes, the chair would slowly sink to its lowest point. For someone who is 6'6" and had both knees replaced two years ago, getting up from this position is painful. My daughter contacted Flash (lack of) customer support. (Sidebar - you can only call or snail mail any issue to them; REALLY?? It is 2021 and no email or chat????) After daily phone calls for about 2 weeks, the company promised to send a new cylinder and chair back. These pieces were received about 6-7 weeks later. The back, though different than the original, fit fine. The cylinder was just that - a cylinder only. The problem is the chair I have is one with the cylinder integrated into the chair's base. We are now in the endless waiting game for someone, anyone, to answer the phone at Flash. My guess is that this will all be resolved sometime after June 5th - the day after the warranty expires. The chair is very nice when functioning properly. If you have any issue which requires customer support - forget it! ... show more

  • Lasted 5 years and hundreds of hours of use
The chair was comfortable and held me for hundereds of hours of use. I weigh 300lbs and an not gentle. The arms adjustments are bad, but comfortable enough. As you can see the chair failed on that plate and then a bolt that controls the back snapped. Even so, it still functions even after failing in two points. ... show more

  • Sturdy and comfortable
I'm 6'5", 350lbs and this chair fits me perfectly. I don't even have to have the height all the way up! The seat is very comfortable. I assembled the arms all the way in toward the seat because I'm not that wide, so they're perfect for me too. It's nice to have my feet directly under my knees for a change, as opposed to stretched out against the wall on the other side of my desk. The materials are heavy-duty - I was amazed at how solid the base is. The arm rests could stand to be a bit higher, but at least they're even with my desk. And the material on them is very firm. I could put pads on them if I want softer. I can lean back and don't feel like I'm going to topple over backwards. If I get an ottoman, I could sleep in this chair. The mesh back is very cool, but if I want warmer I can put a blanket on it. At least I won't be sweating in the summer. My back is finally satisfied! UPDATE: Over a year later and the chair is still as good as new. I'm thinking of ordering one for work now. ... show more

  • Solidly built but not quite so comfortable sitting for long periods
It is definitely a strong, well-built chair with plenty of space for an oversized person. Height and tilt can be locked in place. The main thing I do not like about it is the seat. I was used to a mesh seat. This one is a fabric cushion. It has a propensity to become a little too swampy if spending long hours at my desk. Another thing about the seat is that, when the back is fully upright, the seat slants slightly forward. It is only slightly but definitely noticeable over time. I tend to find myself sitting on the edge of the seat. For the price, though, it is a solid chair- perhaps more suited to shorter periods of use in terms of comfort. The instructions were clear. The parts are heavy and awkward, though. So, having a helper to assist will make assemble much easier. ... show more

  • Falling apart after less than 3 years
The gas cylinder started failing in less than a year; it was annoying but I got used to having to keep raising it whenever it started to sink downward. Now less than 3 years later the tilt lock is failing and the chair makes a loud crunching/groaning sound and tilts itself forward regardless of the tilt lock. It's so uncomfortable to sit in that it's causing me severe lower back pain. It wasn't that comfortable to begin with, but now it's excruciating. Don't expect this to last more than 2-3 years at most if you do decide to buy it. I'm going to have to buy a new chair now after spending over $300 on this back in late 2017. ... show more
