My F22 arrived this weekend and I took it out and put it through its paces. This is a very nice unit, lightweight, excellent for beginners and easy to operate and maintain. The presets make it easy to sense what might have been detected and the PinPoint (PP) feature has pretty accurate depth perception. It is weatherproof, so if you get caught in a shower, fear not - the unit will soldier on. At the end of my hunts I went home and hosed it off lightly and it's ready for the next adventure. Also, the coil is waterproof - I went down to the creek and scanned along the creek bed, underwater, etc., and it worked beautifully. I was skeptical about battery life - the F22 uses 2 AA batteries - and these are holding up just fine after two and a half days of hunting. The manufacturer says they are good for about 20 hours of use and, so far, I think that is an accurate claim. The coil is key, in my opinion, and the F22 had a nice, lightweight, narrow coil that improves accuracy, especially discriminating between metals in certain modes. While some detectorists prefer a large coil to cover more space, my preference is a narrow coil that is more accurate and less fatiguing through a long day of detecting. However, I would note that the you can purchase replacement and accessory coils including a smaller 7" round coil and a larger 11" coil. Although the unit doesn't come with one, coil covers are available from Fisher as well. If I could change one thing about this detector, it would be the arm rest - it has limited adjustability. However, this is a minor thing and it is still very comfortable to operate. It is a solid detector and easy to assemble. Fisher is a division of First Texas, one of the biggest manufacturers of metal detecting equipment in the United States.     • My first serious metal detector - it's fantastic!

I had a metal detector when I was younger - my parents bought it for me from Radio Shack. It was fun and it worked, but that was it. Fast forward many years and I decided to try to get back into it. After looking up many reviews, I ended up reading an article comparing this with a Garrett and this was the winner of that article so it's what I went with. I'm so happy I did! There's a few different modes and settings on it - from different volume levels, to allowing you to change the sounds and tones of certain metals, to being able to cancel out Iron if you wanted to - it's great! There's nothing that's overly complicated with this, you can literally put it together, turn it on and go find some great things! The coil itself is waterproof but the power box is not so keep that in mind. It's safe to use in pouring rain and it's listed as weatherproof; I've used it in the rain and I can say that it worked flawlessly. I've been able to detect objects as deep as 12" underground without any problems. I've found an ox shoe from the 1850's, coins, nails, trash, literally everything so far and each ping of this detector brings a small rush of excitement every single time because you never know what you're going to find! It has a pinpointer feature also which is great - you can narrow down with high accuracy the exact area the object is in. One thing I highly recommend if you buy this is to also buy a pinpointer tool (Not just the feature that's built in to this detector but an actual pinpointer tool). The two pieces of equipment make a lethal duo and you'll be able to find things a lot faster with the pinpointer after you've located the area the object is in with this detector. Let me start off by saying this is a good metal detector. It is very light weight, it only requires 2 AA batteries, and the VDI readout makes it easy to determine what you are about to find. The pinpointer works well on the metal detector, it was different than the one on my Whites. It only works while the pinpointer button is held down on the Fisher. It has good depth, I have found Pennies at 7 inches, dimes at 6-7, quarter at 8+. I have found it reacts faster in relic mode than in coin mode. The depth gauge is fairly accurate. Pull tabs ring 35, and 44 on mine so I have learned to leave them be. Buried aluminum cans sometimes show up as dimes and quarters, But the numbers jump around instead of holding the same number So you can learn to identify them. Its an excellent metal detector for the money, it has several features you don't usually get on a metal detector in this price range. The coil is waterproof and the control head is water resistant. It has a VDI readout and a depth indicator. It also has multiple tones which let you know a good hit without watching the screen all of the time. I feel like it is superior to many detectors in this price range, The Whites coinmaster, and Garrett 250 lack the VDI readout. Which I feel is important to determine what the detector is actually Seeing. And let you spend more time digging coins, and less time digging pull tabs and trash. You can buy a better metal detector, but it will cost more than $250. I feel like its the best detector available in the sub $250 class. ... show more

    • Great start for a new hobby.

This was our families 2nd metal detector. It's the first one we've used for anything other than detecting nails in wood. I have to say our first outing was quite the experience. I think my wife, an avid Oak Island tv show fan was intrigued as much as i was. Our first outing was to a local park that was a farm until about 15 years ago. I didn't expect to find much there but it gets a lot of traffic so i was hoping for some coins. Honestly all i wanted was just one quarter to justify the purchase and to say this thing actually works. What I learned was that metal detecting is much more work than I expected. Being new to metal detecting the whole process was a little confusing. Most of our hits were not obvious but slight blips that you really had to work at to find. We started in the parking lot which was gravel which was giving me all kinds of crazy hits so I decided maybe gravel was not good for the detector so we worked our way to the first gazebo area and right away I got a pretty solid #3 or #4 hit on the display so I started digging. Sure enough it was a pop tab. Over the course of the next hour we found lot's of foil which registers in the #3 area, 2 quarters, a nickel, and 3 penny's as well as some aluminum cans, some old metal brackets, a nail and some junk. Every hit we did find something so I was very happy about that. What i got out of the experience is that it's a lot more work than I expected which was fine because i was looking to get a little exercise. Over all after a days use I feel I have a good grasp on the F22 now and feel confidant in it's use. One thing I can't recommend enough is to get a pin pointer. I do not have one but after just one use I can see how valuable they are. Many times it would take a while to locate the penny or quarter in the 6 inch deep hole we just made. My opinion of the F22 is that it does work and did a good job. It easy to use, the pin pointer function works pretty well but more often than not it's just as easy to locate the object without it. The menu and settings are easy to navigate and the owners manual was well thought out. For my use I feel it did it's job and deserved a 5 star rating but just know I have no experience with any other detectors in this price range. So I cannot say if it's better or worse. ... show more

Wanted a MD to have some recreation while camping in a desert off road area. Researched several brands. This model kept coming up on the lists of good detectors. Having good results with this and still learning the nuances of the device. You can spend a lot more for a High End detector. But for recreational detecting, this is worth considering. Alright, so I did a bunch of research before buying this detector. I spent hours online reading anything and everything I could find on entry level detectors and eventually convinced myself this F22 was the way to go. I honestly could not be happier. I was into detecting as a kid with a cheap unit I got for Xmas one year and decided to get back into it during quarantine. My property was originally inhabited around 1880 so I thought, there's bound to be old stuff out here. It does take some time getting used to the machine. At first I was digging everything only to have a pocket full of square nails at the end of the day. But now, after a month of practice, I can tell which targets are worth while and what to skip. So far I've found a silver quarter (1953), a sterling silver ring, and my first Indian Head Penny (1891). The best part is my kids get into digging up "treasure". So just buy this. Now. Do it.
