  • A foolproof method for learning chords, practicing changes and building rhythm on guitar
Format: Kindle
I picked up the guitar, along with Joseph Alexander's Beginner's Guess Lessons, a couple of months ago. Having taken a long hiatus from playing, except for a few failed and frustrating attempts to rush into all the material I knew ten or more years ago, I was thrilled with the author's teaching style and the quick progress I made. The First 100 Chords for Guitar is a fine extension for continuing my practice. The material in the first two chapters is similar to what is covered in Beginner's Guitar Lessons. Likewise, the practice routine and strumming patterns given are also much the same. That's what makes this title a success. With each new chord, Mr. Alexander takes the student through a routine to first build muscle memory for the fingering and then quickly places it in context by practicing chord changes and progressions. By the end of the first chapter alone, a student has the tools to play the rhythm to a huge number of songs, especially in the keys of A, C and G major, as well as E and A minor. More importantly, this book doesn't just give chord shapes and exercises before rushing on to more chord shapes and exercises. Mr. Alexander, as in Beginner's Guitar Lessons, urges patience and mastery. His teaching and practice methods don't merely show the student new chords, but aim to drill the muscles until playing that chord feels as natural as tapping your foot to the beat of your favorite song. He also provides a sensible plan for building speed with strumming chord changes and plenty of example chord progressions for practice. A few notes: 1. Don't expect to rush through the lessons. Following the routine correctly, it will take about 20 minutes, give or take, to work through the first two chords properly. But, done properly, those two chords will be completely ingrained in your muscles memory. 2. A metronome is a must for keeping time, as the practice routine speeds you along from single strums at a slow tempo to playing quarter and eighth note rhythms. Lots of apps for this; pick one, learn how it works and use it religiously. 3. If you follow the methods given by the author, you're playing will improve. 4. As with Beginner's Guitar Lessons, the one glaring omission is a section on tuning (at least in the Kindle version - I can't speak for the print version.) A properly fingered chord on an out of tune guitar sounds like a duck fight, so get a tuner (again, lots of apps for this) and tune your instrument before each practice session. Maybe I'm a harsh critic, but this is too important to leave out of a book geared toward beginners, and is the only thing holding me back from giving a five star rating. ... show more

  • Where was this book all those years ago?
Format: Kindle
So grateful to have this. I recently had this book gifted to me, and I was wondering why there was nothing like this when I first started playing? Yeah, there was chord encyclopedias that just overwhelmed you when you looked at them. Pick a couple of easy looking chords and that’s how you self taught. This book is a beauty and the one I wish I had when I first started. Even after all this time, I learned something from a GREAT beginners book. Moving a couple of fingers in the same location, gives you a chord in another key and chord type. It has a ‘how to’ practice section, you have to supply the stay on the ball section. Different strumming patterns, so you don’t get bored with it all. A sprinkling of theory. Follow through with this book for couple months and you are gonna wow ‘em all. You can do this. ... show more

  • Organized, Clear, Clean, and Concise!
Format: Paperback
I taught piano for 34 years (Berklee grad) and have been playing guitar for a long time as well. I actually purchased this book to help teach my girlfriend . I love the way the material is organized both pedagogically and also the way it is presented physically on the page. It is clear, concise, and really set up for someone to apply the material as they learn it. Another bonus is having access to the MP3 files so one can learn on their own and hear the examples demonstrated. This is my second purchase from Fundamental Changes (Simon Pratt's "Beyond Rhythim Guitar" which I purchased for myself) and I was equally impressed with that as well! https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Rhythm-Guitar-around-Important-ebook/dp/B073RSX7JL/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1540918770&sr=8-2&keywords=guitar+simon+pratt+chords Keep up the great work! ... show more

  • Excellent and understandable
Format: Paperback
This book is a great book. This is the third book I have bought from fundamental- changes series. I wish these books had been around years ago. I play guitar but have learned that being self taught comes with dangers. This book guides you correctly and allows you to self correct errors learned before. I began playing guitar in the late 60s. I recommend these books above others and I am very pleased with their methods and clarity of teaching. Thank you very much. ... show more

  • Not a really good book for beginners.

  • A solid title for learning chords.
Format: Paperback
As an amateur guitar player, I have found myself purchasing more than a few books in the hopes that one will "speak to me" and turn on the part of my brain that understand chords. I do have a basic understanding (haven't quite got CAGED down yet) but definitely need help with understanding the transitions between chords, the "varieties" of chords, and so on. This book does break it down in a very "digestible" way - not only explaining concepts in a way I get, but also offering a different technique for practicing chords. Remember, my friends: it's a marathon, not a sprint. I have to keep telling myself that! ... show more
