  • One of the best upgrades you can make
I have held off on writing a review until I had a few batches through my fermenter, but now that I have just finished my third I feel like I can give a good honest review for those debating on buying. I have always used carboys and big mouth bubblers for fermenting, I have used glass and plastic and had the same results. The only thing I hadn't used was a conical shaped vessel, so I was a little hesitant on trying it out in fear I wouldn't like it. I watched every video on YouTube, and read every article and forum post I could find where people were reviewing them. Honestly, I found a lot of different levels of love or hate towards it, but the positive reviews far outweighed the negatives. So I ordered one. When I got it in, I immediately wanted to hang it on the wall and just look at how pretty it looked, and feel proud of myself for making the next step in my homebrewing career. While putting all the pieces together I realized something wasn't quite right. On the side with the gallon markings, there was a threaded spot, which I assumed was for the thermowell, and on the other side (exactly in the same spot but on the opposite side) there was a 1/2" hole, with no threads. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what it was for, so I emailed FastFerment to find out if it was a bad vessel. I heard back from them the same day, and they told me that it was definitely a bad product. They overnighted me a new conical to take care of the one I had gotten, and they got it to me fast enough so I could use it the coming weekend for my first batch that I had planned for it. I was extremely pleased with their level of professionalism and response time. As for putting it together, it is extremely easy, although the instructions could be improved upon. BUT, even just looking at the picture on the box, it's easy to tell what goes where. They have included a roll of teflon tape/plumbers tape, and you have to use it. I recommend making 6 or 7 passes around each male thread that they indicate in the instructions. I haven't had any issues with leaks while doing it this way. Mounting the brackets to the wall was extremely easy as well. I ended up marking the distance between them at 15 3/4" which lined up perfectly with the center of each brackets sets of holes. Like I said, I have had 3 batches through my conical, and they have turned out great! In my other fermenters, I would always use a primary and a secondary container, but with this unit I no longer have to do that. When primary fermentation is complete, you close the valve, remove the ball, either harvest the yeast, or dump the yeast, sanitize the ball and put it back on and open the valve. It couldn't be easier. The only 2 things I have had a little trouble with is unscrewing the top cap and the bottom ball. The top cap is a little large to get a good grip of, and that is coming from a guy with pretty large hands. And the bottom ball is a little hard just because if it gets any liquid around the threads it gets rather sticky. I took a pair of channel locks, put a towel over the teeth and used that to get some extra leverage to unscrew it. But these are very minimal inconveniences. Overall I am in love with my conical, that I have two of them mounted with room to hang a third in the coming months. (Please excuse the dirty vessel, I had just put that batch into a keg and hadn't cleaned it yet) ... show more

  • So far I like it but have had to go slow because its ...
I'm in the process of brewing my first batch with this fermenter. So far I like it but have had to go slow because its new to me and I don't want to mess it up. ( neither the equipment nor the beer :-) ) I don't know why but my fermenter had a hole drilled into the side of it opposite the thermowell. I saw an earlier review that indicated that this was a manufacturing mistake but since I have already used the product, I doubt I could get a new unit now. What I did was I installed a sampling spigot into that hole and effectively plugged it but the location is not ideal because it is so close to where it hangs on the wall brackets. It doesn't completely interfere with the system but doesn't allow it to pivot very far either. As I said before, I'd rather have a perfect (un drilled) product but I'm making it work. Most people know that the threads on the product need some work. Its causes a little stress as you just hope that it will be ok but so far it has been fine for me. I am brewing a IIPA "Pliny the Elder clone" which is producing a lot of trub. So far I have removed two collection balls worth and will likely get a third. I noticed a big drop in vigorous fermentation after each of the bowl removal. This might be my mistake in removing it too soon thereby removing a lot of yeast but each time I had a decent clog that I had to remove. I'm afraid that if I had allowed 5 days or more of ferment before removing bowl that I would not have been able to remove the clog. I'm excited for the idea of this product and hope it will help make better beer, easier and cleaner. I would rate higher if my product didn't have a hole in it where there should not be one. As many have said, it would be nice if the threads were ready to go out of the box but for the cost I was willing to work a little to get it to seal tight. I'm interested in the rumor of a product with a larger bottom diameter to lessen the possibility of clogs. I think the carry strap would be a good investment as well as the stand but since the stand is $29 I'll probably make something on my own So far so good. Hopefully I'll remember to come back and update this review after a few more batches. UPDATE!!! Honestly I believed that I was stuck with a bad unit with an extra hole in it. I was still going to work with it but was a little sad that my new investment was faulty. Well to my surprise Fastferment contacted me right away. They apologized and offered to send me a new fermenter asap. Now I know that they were just fixing a problem that probably shouldn't have happened BUT their quick response and generous gift of a new fermenter is quite refreshing to say the least. It has been a while since I have really felt like a company had over and above customer service, but these guys ROCK! Even though the fermenter needs to be sanded and cleaned up a bit before first use, and you need to carefully tape all threads each use, I have updated my review from 3 to 5 stars primarily because of the customer service department at fast ferment. I like the low cost/ good enough quality of the product. I am totally confident that IF you have a problem, the fast ferment team will quickly get back to you and help you out right away. I don't know if this is ok or not but a specific huge thanks to Paula and Jes at fast ferment! You two have made me a fan! Cheers! Show this to your boss and ask for a raise! :-) ... show more
