The starter is very forgiving, I had to put it in the refrigerator for almost 2 weeks 10 days after getting it started and when I got home and took it out, it "woke up" and has done beautifully! I absolutely love that this gluten free starter has no xantham gum, or any type of gum for that matter, in it. It is perfect for my son who has to be gluten free and gum free.     • I am on the 4th day of my sourdough starter and I am loving the starter kit.
It has everything you need to grow your sourdough starter except your sourdough culture. I purchased a San Francisco starter culture. I feed and add to my culture every 24 hours, and the temperature band, silicone spatula, and cloth cover are essential.

This is basically a 1 quart straight side mason jar with a spurtle, adhesive thermometer, elastic band and awkward cheesecloth cover. I should have shopped longer and smarter because I already have everything except the spurtle. I blame myself for clicking thoughtlessly. I took off a star because after buying this overpriced "kit" you still need to buy the starter culture separately. ... show more

I’m disappointed that I didn’t read carefully, I saw “kit” and mistakenly thought I’d be good to start upon receiving. Wrong. There are no instructions. There was no starter to start. Too expensive for a glass jar and a spatula. Would not recommend. I appreciate written instructions, not having to fire up a computer and searching for instructions or watching videos from cultures for health that don’t match the product I purchased. Thankfully I’ve realized I don’t need all this, got brave, and started my own starter just like granny did! Yay me! 😉 I was going to process a return, but my daughter wants to play with this one. UPDATE: I was quite impressed to receive a response from Cultures For Health offering a full refund. All I had to do was reply “full refund”. How nice. I did that. However, instead of receiving a refund, I received a message that made me feel like an idiot. Basically stating that if I actually wanted to make bread I bought the wrong kit, but here’s The kit you should have ordered. Not nice. But in the meantime, my homemade starter is doing great, and I made my first sourdough sandwich loaf. Yay me again!😂 FINAL UPDATE: This company does not honor their offers. After several back and forth messages I’ve come to realize Cultures For Health does not stand behind offers their employees make. I was offered a refund. I got the package in mail and opened it to find no sourdough stater. I thought like most buyers that it would be included. Not only that, there was no instructions inside as well. Not very happy foe the price paid.

The included spatula is extremely convenient. The starter culture also activates perfectly. I’ll repeat my first review: Do not try to tear off and reattach the thermometer scale if you think you have set it ‘wrong.’ Even if it bothers you that it is glued crookedly, do not peel it off, as the marks that will later appear on this scale will irritate you even more. Otherwise, everything is just great! I would be glad if the weights were indicated in grams in the instructions, but for those who are accustomed to non-metric measurement systems, everything should be simpler ... show more
