Just put the starter in a glass bowl and cover with a towel, plug in the pad, and in an hour it brings the dough up to about 85ºF. This works great, but it gets hot! I use it for kombucha brewing and I have to check it every few hours because it will bring the temp too high. Definitely need a timer to plug it into unless you have the patience to check on it often.

This works well. I was confused by the reports about no temperature control. I have not yet used on my harvest, this Sunday, but I have had probe immersed in water for weeks and do temp checks. It seems to be about as good as it gets. I am not sure what will happen long term with the probe but the product was only 40 or 50 dollars. I am sure I can replace probe if needed. I looked at many other options and this seemed the best. Watched dear knows how many You tube videos prior to spending my 40 dollars. Hope this helps.     • Thermostat useless for water kefir
Size: 10" Heat Mat + Heating Thermostat
My poor experience could largely be due in part to my misunderstanding of how this would work. I guess I thought that the thermostat would monitor the temp of the water kefir and turn the heating pad on or off accordingly, based upon the target temp I'd program in. However, the temperature gauge can't be immersed in water - something I didn't know until the product arrived and I read the directions - so the best I could do was put the temp gauge next to the jar. That obviously didn't work well. So I'll be returning this and ordering a stand-alone heating pad and plugging it into a Wyze outlet. Maybe after some time I can figure out how long the the pad needs to be on and off to maintain the desired temp. ... show more
