  • Excellent for camping/road trips. Be sure to bring power source
Style: E3 Pro Black
The media could not be loaded. Finding good, portable projectors for small-group, outdoor movie nights has been a disappointing quest over the last, few years. From $60 to $300 devices, each had much to like but also left a lot still to be desired. There were the big ones that output excellent, bright images but were more geared towards the home or office with HDMI/VGA connectors, small ones that were very portable but lacked the brightness and sharpness, and more recently, minis that could operate off a battery but also sacrificed image quality, input options, and good sound. I eventually did find one that checked off almost every one of my requirements, and that was the Anker Nebula Mars 2 Pro. Later on, I also purchased the Xgimi Halo because of its native 1080p display resolution. They were excellent projectors with built-in batteries that could last up to about 2 hours, but that also came with a huge price tag. For those who do not need one with a battery built in -- like for use at home, backyard, office, or still camping with a portable power station. cheaper options are available. The Etoe projector seemed like a decent one with supposedly loud sound, Android TV 10.0 smart features, and most importantly -- a claim of 500 ANSI Lumens. The latter spec is important and we will cover why later. This review will also go over some projection basics that helped me decide what was right for our family. MANYBOX PROJECTOR & RAVPOWER 80W AC POWER Among all the projectors I had tested over the years, 2021/2022's ManyBox V501 was our favorite: it was small, decently bright, did not draw too much energy from a portable battery station, but suffered from speakers that were tinny and only adequately loud for a small room setting. Yet, its number of input options, including USB and microSD, won my heart because that meant not having to bring along a laptop to play a movie from. This year's summer had put that to the test: we played a movie off the side of my car while getting ready for backpacking the Kings Canyon National Park wilderness the following day. It was connected to a RAVPower 80W AC Power Bank, lasted nearly two hours, and made for a very, very happy son! ETOE PROJECTOR WHAT'S GOOD? WHAT'S BAD? PROS - Design: Portable and compact, but material is lower quality than Anker or Xgimi's to keep the price down - 500 ANSI lumens produces enough brightness to cover a medium-sized room with low, ambient light -- See TIPS section for details on lumens, lux, and ANSI lumens - Native screen resolution of 1080p for crisp images and text (1920x1080) -- Can be scaled up to 4K - Relatively inexpensive - Projection size rated for a diagonal 40"-150" -- Found about 90"-100" (at 8′-10′ distance) to be the sweet spot for a fully dark room - Two 10W speakers are decently loud, full, and somewhat clear. Bass was a bit lacking -- Projector can be used as a Bluetooth 4.0 speaker (A2DP supported) - Sharp autofocus and keystone for limited skew correction - Multiple ports: HDMI, USB, AV, Audio Output -- Allows playing of media off the USB drive - WiFi for direct connection to the Internet, local network, and supported screen mirroring -- Supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Former is slower than 5 GHz but has larger signal coverage and better compatibility with older devices - Netflix-certified. That's big! - Android TV 10 OS with full Google Play Store support -- Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Plex available -- APK files can be sideloaded - Built-in physical controls at top - Remote control with mouse functionality -- Some apps do not support directional movement and will require the use of the mouse - Minimal fan noise - Projection modes (configured via Settings) -- Front: like in classrooms -- Rear: like rear projection TVs and digital signs -- Front Ceiling / Rear Ceiling - Light - Carry case included CONS - Build quality is mediocre - Looks similar to Anker's design, including the carry case - Autofocus is slow though crisp once locked - No built-in storage card support (microSD or SD), making the most portable way to transport media be a USB thumb drive -- Solution: elago Mobile Nano II - No lens cover - Speaker could use better bass - No carry handle - Larger than other mini projectors - Some apps have limited or no support for the directional pads, though this is not Etoe's fault -- Mouse function on the remote control can be used instead - WiFi Screen Mirroring with Samsung Galaxy S20+ was reliable via Chromecast -- Worked well for photo viewing PROJECTOR BASICS BRIGHTNESS: LUMENS, ANSI LUMENS, AND LUX For a very long time, the lack of an apple-to-apple comparison between projector brightness had been a source of frustration. Measurements I had commonly seen were in lumens, ANSI lumens, and lux — and even then I found that two projectors with the same rating did not produce the same amount of brightness. Worse yet, a 6,000 lumen unit was dimmer than the 500 ANSI lumens (which generically is about 3,500 lumens) of the Nebula Mars II Pro during one of my tests! So, I did some digging in an attempt to better understand light measurements. You will find that there is no easy way to convert ANSI lumens to generic lumens. Some manufacturers overstate their lumen rating in an attempt to sell more without regard to how the disinformation could hurt their brand — and customer trust — in the long run. TERMINOLOGY - Lumens: Intensity of light (luminous flux) from a given source. This rating does not change regardless of distance from which the source is measured from - Lux: Intensity of light at a specific location away from the source (1 lux = 1 lumen/sq meter). The farther away you travel, the lower the Lux rating, whereas Lumen remains unchanged - ANSI Lumens: Considered to be the most accurate measure of brightness emitted by a projector -- Rating was developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It is derived from measuring 9 points on a 3×3 grid as follows: --- Projector set 2.4m (7.9 ft) from the screen --- Projection size set to 60" with a 3×3 grid --- Measure the illuminance of each of the 9 points on the grid --- ANSI Lumens = average of the 9 points multiplied by the total surface area of the projected image CONTRAST RATIO Projectors often include the Contrast Ratio in their list of technical specifications. It is a measurement of how dark and light the respective areas can be rendered, looking for the difference between the brightest and darkest pixels. For example, when watching a movie, you want the black to be as deep/dark as possible without affecting the lighter parts of the scene. This would result in a better experience with sharper, more detailed images and colors. A higher contrast ratio is generally better and can go as high as 10,000:1 (white is 10,000x brighter than black), though the human eye will have difficulty discerning the miniscule difference past a certain point. A good ratio to look for should fall between 1,000:1 and 3,000:1. With all that said... The contrast ratio practically is a meaningless specification. Ambient light and other factors can SIGNIFICANTLY affect the contrast, and as such, one should focus more on darkening the room and using a good projection screen. An optimally low-light room would yield no visible difference between 300:1 and a 50,000:1 contrast ratio. LUMEN-TO-ANSI LUMEN CONVERSION Some sources use a 7x factor to convert lumen to ANSI lumen. Although this is NOT ACCURATE because of the many factors involved that affect brightness, it provides a generic reference to which to compare products by. Remember, ANSI lumen takes into consideration the projection distance, screen size, and 9 measurement points, whereas lumen only measures a light source's fixed intensity regardless of the aforementioned elements. In the case of the Etoe E3 Pro, its 500 ANSI lumen rating can be roughly converted to 3,500 lumens (500 x 7). PERCEIVED VS MEASURED BRIGHTNESS According to Viewsonic, two projectors with the same ANSI lumen rating may appear different in brightness due to the human eye being "more sensitive to certain wavelengths of light". In other words, more color-saturated images appear to be brighter as the result of the HK (Helmholtz-Kohlrausch) Effect. Furthermore, Viewsonic also points out that LED-based projectors produce higher, perceived brightness over older lamp ones despite having the same ANSI lumen rating. DID YOU KNOW? A projection screen with a gain rating of 1.0 preserves the image's brightness, whereas a higher or lower number will respectively increase or decrease it. For instance, the Gain rating of 1.1 with the 100BTF Screen with Stand ensures the image brightness is not hampered by that product's material. ROOM SIZES Common ANSI lumen ratings recommended for various room sizes are shown below. Keep in mind, however, that image brightness can be affected by ambient light, projection distance, screen size and type, light output technology and age, and other factors. - Small room: 200-300 - Large room: 400-600 - Large auditorium: 2,000+ METAL-HALIDE, LED, DLP, AND LCD PROJECTION SYSTEMS - DLP: Texas Instruments' Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology provided a significant leap in projection through the use of expensive, spinning color wheels that produced sharp images, was 3D capable, and had low response times suitable for video playback - LCD: LCD projectors work great for movies, have no moving parts, are generally less expensive than DLP, but output less contrast and require filter maintenance There is almost no visible difference in quality and between DLP and LCD today. LIGHT SOURCES - Metal-Halide Lamp: One of the oldest, but still most commonly-used lamps produces bright images with excellent color rendering -- Get very hot and only last 2,000 – 5,000 hours before needing replacement at an exorbitant cost -- A noisy fan must be left running for a while after power off to ensure adequate cooling before putting the unit away -- Avoid touching the lamp with your naked fingers because the skin oils can degrade the coating and cause the bulb to explode when turned on - LED: With a lifespan of over 20,000 hours, LED projectors generate very little heat and power consumption and require almost no maintenance. Their brightness and image sharpness trail Metal-Halide lamps, though the gap has slowly been closing ... show more

  • Good Value! 600 Lumens?
Style: E3 Pro White
This unit is very interesting. With some tweaks and upgrades, it could be the best budget projector on Amazon. I have been using the unit for last few days and here are my pro's and con's: Pro's: -This unit has the best auto-focus and auto-keystone out of all the projectors I had a chance to use. It comes perfect almost every time and there is rarely any need for manual adjustment. -Unit comes with licenced android system and it works flawlessly. -Audio is clear and loud enough. -Picture quality is decent. Not the brightest nor sharpest, but it is good enough. -The colors are very good, compared to some units in this price range. Cons: -My unit seems to be previously used, as there were some smudges on projector and the lens was already dusty. -There is no way this is 600 ANSI lumens. Compared to some projectors in 600-800 ANSI range...this was not even close! Maybe I was sent an older version, or something like that, but this is more comparable to my 300-400 ansi units. I might be wrong, as I don't have any tool to measure it. It is simply based on my experience and comparison with many different projectors ranging from 250-800 lumens. -The audio situation is strange. I already mentioned quality in pro's, as it is very good. However, there are some issues. When you connect something via HDMI, audio goes from 1-100 and it gets very loud. Definitely 20 Watts. When you are using internal android system, the audio goes from 1-15 and it seems to be only about 30-35% of the output. It is very strange. -The remote has to be pointed directly towards the unit. It gets annoying if the unit is mounted above your head. If you are sitting behind the unit, it won't be a problem. Conclusion: This is a very interesting budget unit. The built in android system makes this a multimedia unit right from the start. Both picture quality and audio quality are good enough. For what it is and how much you pay for it, I would say it is definitively a 4.5 star unit. ... show more

  • Easy to use & great projection quality for the price. Comes as a complete package!
Style: E3 Pro Black
The media could not be loaded. I have a portable DLP technology projector but wanted something that has wifi connectivity too. Hence decided to try this. Overall I am satisfied with this projector. This can be also carried anywhere while traveling because of its small existence. This projector has small-sized significance in the real world and is very lightweight. Here is my take after a few weeks of usage of this product. My 2 cents below: Pros: - Picture Quality: 1920*1080 FHD resolution projection will definitely not going to disappoint you with bright 600 ANSI lumens. It has a good contrast ratio & even during the daytime, I can see the projection quite clearly. Also to mention that I am projecting on my light grey wall only and not using any projection screen. But definitely, the best experience is in the dark only. Overalls it delivers appreciatable picture quality for the price. - Ports: Has 1 HDMI & 1 USB input port. I have put the thumb drive in one USB port - Looks: I like this and I can assure even you will love it too for its curved edges design - Portability: Small dimensions & lightweight making it incredibly portable - Long Usage: It doesn't overheat and delivers long enough continuously. I watched for almost 3 hours continuously and faced no issues anytime. Also, these have a long lamp life - Focus adjustment: Focus adjustment works nicely and makes it very convenient to use. It has an auto keystone correction feature too - Wifi Connectivity: In-built wifi makes casting/mirroring very easy and it worked great with my iPhone. Does has Bluetooth connectivity too - Sound Quality: Inbuilt dual stereo speakers do a decent job if you are projecting in a small room but struggle otherwise. Hence, keeping this at the end of the pros list - Warranty: Manufacturer warranty provided & which gives confidence in their product Cons: - Power back: No inbuilt battery so needs AC power all the time. In my opinion, any portable projector should mandatorily have an inbuilt battery so that it can be used for at least some time without a power supply - Inbuilt speakers could have been a little louder. It lacks the bass. - I would have loved 2 HDMI ports instead of just one. I have multiple devices with HDMI accessibility which I need to switch all the time based on what I am planning to project Considering all pros & cons, this product is easily a 5-star product. It is reasonably priced, and this is worth for money. ... show more

  • Updated review.
Style: E3 Pro Black
Sooo I have had 3 of these projectors in a short time. The first one I bought claimed to be updated from 400 ansi to 500ansi but it was not bright at all and debated keeping it. But I kept it and then after a month it kept turning off. So I bought another to return that one in its place and it claimed it was now 600ansi and it was a lil brighter but not 600ansi. Around that time the company finally answered me and told me they were sending me a new one for free...well that's the one I have kept. It's deffly 600 ansi and much brighter than the first 2. The image quality is very sharp and the projector has a lot of great features. The auto keystone and auto focus works great, even at a distance. Other projectors in this price range (emotn N1) have issues with these features at a distance. It also remembers how u set the screen size and such up so u do not need to set it up everytime u turn it on when other projectors in this price point (emotn N1) you have to set every time u turn it on. When u hit the power button there is a quick option for a sleep timer which is great cause I use this at night as I'm going to sleep. I did also buy the emotn N1 projector and it's a great projector as well but the picture coloring gets a weird hue especially on skin, when on this projector colors are super accurate and look the way they should. Honestly when comparing the two with all the features this projector has and how much better they work than the emotn N1 this projector is a great deal even with the higher price of 300bux. I paid like 200 with a coupon for the first one. But with the updated brightness it's worth it...as long as u get the proper brightness on yours. The only negatives besides the different brightness varying from projector to projector is the remote. It's awful. You have to point it directly at the projector all the time. It's an easy fix tho cause any Bluetooth remote work pairs with it. I'm currently using a Google TV remote and it's a necessity. So yea this is my review. My projector has great brightness now and for the price with all the included features it's great. Giving it a 4/5 for the different brightness by projector and the terrible Remote. I have been using the replacement projector for about a month with no issues. ... show more
