  • Still Beats a Gas Mower But Serious Design Flaws Continue
Style: Self-Propelled Select Cut- NO BATTERY/CH...
6/13/2022 UPDATE: I did manage to find a way to “fix” the problem of the mower dumping a trail of grass along the right wheels (see 5/20/2022 Update). As I suspected, the mower design is flawed with lack of sufficient suction by the bag chute. Simply placing a narrow plastic “floor” on the deck along that side of the mower increases the suction right below the chute and helps to trap the grass to give it a chance to get sucked up and bagged. It may look like a DIY mess (see photo), but it works. But this doesn’t change my review rating. I shouldn’t have to build a duct-taped floor onto my mower just to get it to perform the very basic requirement of bagging the grass. 5/20/2022 UPDATE: Well, folks, sad to report that I’m lowering my rating on this mower to 2 stars. I initially gave it the benefit of the doubt because my grass was high for the first two cuttings this spring. But today was my third cutting of the year with the new mower. It had been just 6 days since my last cutting, and the grass had grown less than an inch. But on EVERY single row, this mower left behind a constant 2-inch wide, thick trail of grass clippings where the wheels on the right side of the mower roll. (See photos.) So frustrating. If I leave those clippings, within 2 days, my lawn will look like a mini football field, with every 10-yard line marked by a line of bright, tan, dead grass. The only ways to avoid leaving these trails are (1) to either mow in one direction only with the uncut grass always on the right or (2) to go back over every other cut row to suck up the missed clippings. This is yet ANOTHER new design flaw with this 2022 model – introducing another problem I didn’t have with my 2020 model. I mean this is mowing 101: you attach the bag, you mow, and the mower sucks up all the grass clippings into the bag. EGO somehow has managed to screw up this most basic of lawn mower functionality. And it’s clearly a design flaw related to the chute underneath the mower deck that leads to the bag. That chute is on the right side – the only place where this mower drops a bunch of clippings. The design of the chute clearly interrupts the suction power on that side, and the mower just cannot get all the clippings flying around the deck into the bag on that side and dumps a bunch back onto the lawn as you mow. And yes, this happens when the bag is completely empty too. I also checked to make sure the underside of the mower deck was clean of any accumulated grass clippings. It doesn’t matter – this mower just cannot get all the grass into the bag and leaves a constant trail behind you as you mow. I managed to fix the other horrible flaw that left a snaking patch of grass unevenly cut (see original review below), but I’m not sure I’m going to be able to somehow rig something to fix this problem. And I’m really not a fan of double-mowing every other row just to pick up all the clippings this mower won’t grab. I’m honestly rethinking my investment in all of my EGO products. This is really a deal-breaker. Just BAD BAD design. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Note, I own 2 EGO mowers, 2 EGO snow blowers, 3 EGO yard tools, 2 EGO power accessories, 5 EGO battery chargers, and 9 EGO batteries. So I am an overall EGO fan, even though this review is fairly critical. I’m just pointing out design flaws I wish EGO would address. I own and used their early generation mower (model #LM2102SP) for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Overall, it beats any gas mower hands down. Love that I no longer smell like gas fumes and hot oil after every mowing. And the low noise level is wonderful – my neighbors joke that from their windows they think I’m just pretending to mow my lawn because they can’t hear anything. But there are definitely some design flaws with my 2020 model. This year (2022), I upgraded to this model #LM2130SP, but, unfortunately, none of these flaws has been addressed – in fact, new flaws have been created. FLAWS ON BOTH MY 2020 AND 2022 MODELS: -- WHEELS and WHEEL LOCKING: These mowers really need pneumatic wheels. The hard plastic wheels are OK for level, dry grass. But on hilly or wet grass, they have little traction. Worse, when you bump into a tree root or rock, you might as well be hitting a brick wall with these wheels. They have no give whatsoever and will stop you dead in your tracks, which pneumatic wheels would not do. Additionally, when you hit a root or rock, the wheels then completely lock up (EVEN if you’re not using the self-propel feature). Every EGO product suffers from this flaw where the wheels lock up – it’s unfortunately by design. The instructions even tell you to just gently push the mower forward (without any self-propel) to release the wheel locking mechanism. But, oops, you can’t do that when you just got stopped dead in your tracks by hitting the root or rock in the lawn. Your ONLY option is to backup… but the wheels will NOT unlock when going backwards. You end of dragging the mower with locked wheels backwards over your lawn (with needed force, I might add) – which can be really frustrating, because where there’s one root, there are more. So you can easily get trapped between roots with a mower you cannot move because the wheels are locked. It happens to me EVERY TIME I mow my lawn and is VERY annoying. Lastly, the hard plastic wheels have a large tread pattern. If you run over any soil with moisture, it’s gonna stick like glue into these grooves. Pneumatic wheels, because they have natural give, will release any accumulated dirt in the treads as it dries while you continue to mow. These wheels? I spend 10 to 15 minutes after every mowing picking out the dirt. Super annoying and a complete waste of my time that shouldn’t need to happen in the first place if proper wheels were used. -- “PLAY” IN THE HANDLE This one took me a whole mowing season to figure out, and it drove me crazy! At times (but not always) the mower would leave a snaking path of grass about 4 to 5 inches wide, closer to the right side, that wasn’t cut as low as the rest of the grass. It wasn’t a straight line and it didn’t always happen. But when it did, I had no choice but to go back over that row again to get a flush cut. And that was usually about 40 to 50% of the time. I spent a great deal of time double-mowing my lawn. I thought it might be the blade, maybe the weight of the grass in the bag, maybe the wheels were misaligned – my head was spinning, because I couldn’t identify any pattern of actions that would recreate the problem every time. And sharpening the blade – even replacing the blade – did not fix the problem. Finally, I figured it out. You can adjust the height angle of the handle up and down. But the locking mechanism that sets the handle height only locks the handle on the left side. Worse, the locking mechanism is a thick metal pin that inserts into holes on a thin piece of plastic on the mower housing. This is a recipe for failure. While the pin might tightly fit into the hole when the mower is new, eventually, from all the pushing on the handle and the shock back from the mower deck hitting any minor obstacle, the metal pin will slowly widen the plastic hole – especially because the right side of the handle has NO locking mechanism whatsoever, so there is very uneven pressure on the metal pin and plastic hole on the left side. Over time, this allows the handle to have “play” where you can rock the handle up and down without moving the mower. But what you don’t realize is when you’re mowing, the mower deck itself has this same play back against the handle. So depending on if you’re mowing uphill or down (even slightly), and depending on how much grass is in the bag, and depending on how you’re holding and pushing on the handle, the mower deck itself will start to lift up a bit on the right side (where the play is the worst), and suddenly you’ve got a snaking band of grass that isn’t cut as low as all the rest. Truly drove me crazy until I figured it out. I fixed this “play” problem by blocking the handle with plastic shims between the handle and the lower body housing on both sides, making a very tight fit with the handle locking mechanism. This eliminates all play in the handle…and the snaking band of higher cut grass is no more. Sadly, nothing was changed in the design of the handle locking mechanism with my 2022 model – so I had to do the same thing with the new mower. This is truly a design flaw that EGO needs to fix. -- LONG FRONT NOSE The EGO mower has a very long front nose, where the housing extends well in front of the mower blade. Only the sides of the mower can be used to cut close to objects. But that means you cannot cut corners, tight curves, or the ends of narrow patches with this mower. I’ve never had more grass to weed whack than with the EGO mowers. KEY DESIGN CHANGES ON MY 2022 MODEL: -- DUAL BLADE SYSTEM This is a nice improvement. My 2020 model really has horrible suction power, even with the high lift blade. The smallest, thinnest of twigs would be left behind. This dual blade system has corrected this… it has suction power on par with a gas mower. But it comes at the expense of a much louder mower. It is no longer nicely quiet like my 2020 model. -- BATTERY COMPARTMENT Finally, EGO did fix this design flaw. On my 2020 model, the compartment door opens from the front of the mower and lifts up toward the back. This is totally counter-intuitive since you are always standing at the side or back of the mower, so you naturally reach for the rear of the battery door first, especially since the rear of the door has a lip on it that looks exactly like it should be a handle to open the door. No matter that I have used that mower probably 75+ times in two seasons, I still reach for the wrong end of that door. My 2022 model fixes this flaw, and the battery compartment door now lifts from the back of the mower and pivots up toward the front. The door also nicely stays open on its own. On my 2020 model, you have to hold the door open with one hand while you insert or remove the battery with the other hand. The battery also slides into my 2022 model on an angle – a nice feature making it easier to handle the heavy batteries. -- SELF-PROPEL MECHANISM CONTROLS This, unfortunately, EGO really screwed up with the newer model. Now, the on/off switch for the self-propel is right on the center of the handle where you place your hands. And it turns with even the slightest touch… rolling it forward to turn on and increase the speed of the self-propel feature. I generally do not use the self-propel feature, but want it in case I am not feeling up to par or someone else who needs assistance borrows the mower. But now, with the on/off switch for the self-propel feature right where I place my hands, I am forever accidentally turning it on. Now, that wouldn’t be such a big deal IF EGO kept the 2020 design of having to squeeze a separate handle with your right hand to engage the self-propel feature (once it’s turned on). Instead, the new model just has “pressure bars” built right into the handle. You have NO CHOICE but to squeeze these bars down in order to grasp the handle and mow. So you will be engaging the self-propel feature EVERY TIME you mow, even if you’re not using it. Combine these two horrible design flaws, and picture this: I need to bend down to pick up a branch. I don’t want to stop the mower, so I leave one hand squeezing the handle to keep engaging the safety bar, while I lean down with the other hand to grab the branch. Inevitably, my hand on the mower handle shifts a bit to give me more bending room and accidentally (and very easily without my even knowing) spins the on/off switch for the self-propel feature forward just a bit, which turns it on. But that same hand is still holding onto the mower handle, the safety bar, and unwittingly the pressure bar for the self-propel feature, all while I’m bending down to grab the branch. Guess what? All of a sudden, the mower takes off in self-propel mode, nearly knocking me off my feet. It happened so many times in my first two mows of the 2022 season that I have now resorted to duct-taping the self-propel control in the off position to prevent this. But nothing can prevent me from always having to engage the pressure bars even when I’m not using the self-propel feature. That is just bad design… I’m going to wear out those controls (which feel chintzy to begin with) when I’m not even using the self-propel feature. And I’m concerned about this, as the self-propel feature broke down on my 2020 model, even though I rarely ever used it. How any design team could require controls to always be engaged on and off even when the feature they control is not being used is truly beyond me. BOTTOM LINE: I am a fan of electric mowers and generally of EGO products. But I think EGO really needs to listen to feedback from REAL users (and not just designers in a lab) to correct some serious design flaws. I gave this mower a rating of 3 stars. If I could, it would have really been 3-1/2 stars. It’s a quality product that has made me enjoy mowing again (I hated dealing with gas engines). But there is definite and significant room for design improvement. ... show more

  • You should have both gas an battery.
Style: Flagship SP Select Cut- NO BATTERY/CHARGER
I like the mower, & it's very light, but don't believe the hype, I had to use three & half batteries, to do a small front and side lawn, 175 feet wide & roughly 25 yards from the house to the road. Reviews said the Battery should last 40 minutes, it didn't. Gas takes 30-35 minutes. Here's the problem, I used 2 batteries from two Newly bought Ego products, brand new, supposedly, it took 2 batteries & charging one of them a third time & cleaned up the last few passes with a 4th charge. I said, well this is not good, So I ordered a 3rd battery this one came in and it was a made in 2023 brand new! Using this battery, it pretty much handled the whole yard. I didn't buy the Battery Charger & Battery with the Mower; I suggest you don't either. Here's why I also bought an Ego Blower & Hedge Trimmer with battery & charger these batteries did not come in brand new; they were 2 years old "NEW OLD STOCK" the Blower battery was made in Oct 2021 and the Hedge Trimmer battery was made in Sept. 2021. They say they are guaranteed for 3 years. If I bought a 5 year Die Hard Battery for my car, I wouldn't be pleased if had been sitting on the shelf for 2 years. I suggest you don't but the batteries with the EGO products, but them separately and make sure you're getting a battery made that year. Like I said the new 2023 battery handled my front yard pretty much. But I will tell you this I bought a self-propelled, I had to use as a walk behind "push mower" except on hills, to save the battery life to complete the lawn with even the new battery. ... show more

  • A good replacement for an old gas mower.
Style: Flagship SP Select Cut- NO BATTERY/CHARGER
After 14 years, my trust old Honda mower finally retired. Since it is 2022, I decided to get with the times and go green. After some research on Consumers Reports, I opted for this EGO model mower. Since I already own an EGO snow blower, I figured it makes sense to stay with the EGO product line since the batteries are all interchangeable. My yard is about 1/3 of an acre. with a slope of about 6 degrees. Plenty of rain means that I mow at least once per week during peak season and sometimes twice per week in the middle of Spring. I only ever mulch the grass clippings, so I keep the mower in the mulching configuration. Bottom Line On Top - This is a legit lawn mower and certainly a worthy replacement for my old Honda Gas Mower. Pros: 1) Very light. Very maneuverable. Honestly, don't need to use the self-propelled function half as much as my old Honda - which was nearly twice as heavy. 2) I am super allergic to grass and tree pollen. This mower makes less mess (i.e., I don't feel like I am walking behind a blizzard of grass clippings). 3) It is very quiet so no ear protection is necessary. I can even listen to music when I mow the grass now. 4) Cut is sharp and clean. Very comparable to a gas mower if not better. Slices through more dense growth and reduces the clippings to a nice fine discharge. Not much clumping. Seems to produce a very good vacuum for excellent mulching. Very even with no loss of blade speed or torque. This was probably my biggest concern and the EGO certainly didn't let me down. 5) Compact and easy to store. I like the idea that this can fold and store easily. 6) Easy to clean after mowing is complete. Cons: 1) Battery life. As with my EGO snow blower, I am not sure whose yard they measured 60 minutes of mowing time with. Admittedly, my EGO mower is set up with the mulching blade configuration and I use the 7.5 mV batteries that came with my snowblower. The 10 mV battery is unavailable at this time and since I have two 7.5 mV from my snowblower, I figured that I will use them instead. Let me just say that it is a good thing that I have two batteries to use, as this EGO mower drains 1.5 batteries every time I mow. Even if I had a 10 mV battery, I suspect that I'd still have to tap into a second battery to complete my yard which is only about 1/3 an acre 4,200 sqft in size. So battery life is a bit disappointing. 2) Self-propelled feature is a bit slow and quirky. First, this mower is super light, so I engage the self-propelled feature, only when going uphill. Maybe I walk or mow quickly, but this EGO mower seems a bit slow and its max speed is only 3.1 MPH - which is slower than a Honda mower. Secondly, the self-propel function has a bit of a time lag when you press and release the button. Takes a second too long to kick in and then takes a second too long to stop (i.e., when you move in reverse or around an object). Not a deal-breaker, but it is a noticeable design quirk. 3) Not sure who said this is a 21-inch cut. The blade is not 21-inches long, so the front wheels DO NOT indicate where the tangents of the cutting circle are located. Meaning, that I did have to get used to lining up my mowing passes differently. The front wheels can't be used as my guide. Mildly annoying. Overall - this is a solid self-propelled mower that delivers a similar performance to my old Honda mower. The EGO takes a bit of getting used to, but I think the pros outweigh the cons. It is a good value and I would buy it again. ... show more

  • Good tool
Style: Flagship SP Select Cut- NO BATTERY/CHARGER
I have several EGO tools, including the Nexus Power Station (w/4 ea 5 ah batteries). So, I bought the mower (tool only). I really works well. It does take a little use time to become familiar with its behavior, but it does a nice job.
