  • Good heater, if you know what to expect
I installed this heater for my 13k inground pool with electrical service approx 120ft away using #6 wire. As long as you understand how to design the electrical to support this huge power draw and understand the tradeoffs, it works great. Be sure you calculate the voltage drop at the end of your wiring run as that will affect the heater performance. Be sure your breakers are rated for the correct ambient and termination temps because the breakers can get really hot especially if you're heating your pool 24/7 for several days and your service panel is in direct sun. Ensure your electrician understands this. I wanted a heater where I could raise the pool temp to 85F with two days notice anytime during pool season, and this does that. In socal in the winter I can heat my pool from 55F to 85F in approx 4-5 days (but you pay a ton of money in electricity to do so). During spring/summer I can easily raise the temp at least 10-15 degrees per day of use. Watch out for the pool chemistry which directly impacts longevity of the heating elements. Follow the manual instructions and you'll be good. I also drain mine when not in use to further extend longevity. The way this heater works is that is has 3 9kw heating elements and draws the full 27k (9kw x 3) when heating up to the set temp. Once at the set temp, it holds the water temp by cycling the three 9kw heating elements on and off. When the water temp stabilizes it then cycles one 9kw heating element on and off to maintain the water temp. The on-off cycling, especially at 27kw, can have the unintended effect of lights flickering in the house (especially LED lights) due to the momentary voltage drop across the entire house. Depending on your electrical service and neighborhood that voltage drop could result in momentary voltages as low as 80V that I've seen. For a future version I would recommend improving the on-off cycling (when maintaining a set temperature). If there's a way to ramp power draw from zero to 9kw/27kw that would help with voltage drops and lights flickering. ... show more

  • Buyer Beware Ecosmart Pool 27 Kw Electric Pool Heat - Gone Wrong!
First off I have never taken the time to write a review before. May of 2013 we purchased the ecosmart pool 27kw for our 15,000 gallon pool, we loved the idea that it was small and silent. I gave it one star not because it didn't heat the pool, which it did and did very well, but because we could never figure out why it kept turing on and off. The unit is suppose to heat the pool turn off, drop 5 degrees and then turn back on. If this would have been the case I would not be writing this review. Instead it kept is a constant 90 degrees which is where we set the temperature on the unit. However what I noticed was when it hit the temperature that we set to 90 degrees, the house lights would start dimming and I would go out to the unit and the temperature reading would start fluctuating from 90 degrees to 89 degrees making the unit come on and off. I also hook up my amp reader to make absolutely sure and indeed this was the case. As many people may or may not know it takes a lot of electricity to turn on a 27kw unit and when it's turning on and off that is a tremendous amount of wasted energy and from that it tripled our electric bill. I called customer service which was great and they sent me a new mother board and two new thermostats, replaced the mother board and thermostats with the new ones and the same thing happened. At this point I called an electrician and tried to trouble shoot the problem over the phone which we never came up with anything. The unit was completely hooked up by a licensed electrician with number 8 copper wire on 3 separate 50amp breakers, one for each heating element on a 200amp supply which is plenty of power to run the unit. This continued for awhile with many calls to ecosmart customer service, nothing changed but they sent me more parts and eventually a second unit. The second unit did the same thing. After that I called a licensed electrician and had them come out and look at the unit to see if there is anything that would interfere with the heater that would make it bounce back of forth causing the unit to go off and on. There was nothing and he said everything was perfect as far as it being hooked up correctly and this was by a different licensed electrician than the one who originally set it up. I took it a step further and went to my local pool and spa place where I sat down with a technician and showed him all the videos that I had taken of the unit and how everything was set up. He was is dismay, he said that most likely no one would notice the unit shutting off and on like that or that no one has complained because the company is relatively new, and he could not see any reason why the unit would turn off and on like that. We spoke for about an hour going over everything that could be possible and he said I should return the unit. I called the company and tried to return the unit and I was told that they do not do returns, I bought this on amazon and of course it's been to long for me to return it. Ecosmart knows how many times i've called and tried to get this unit to work correctly and have tried everything I could think of. If you looking at this unit and think you might save money, you won't, you'll end up spending way more money on your electric bill than it's worth. I have since then bought a heat pump and it works perfect, not shutting on and off and its right next to where the ecosmart pool 27 was using the same wiring that we used for the ecosmart pool 27, except the electrician had to install a 50amp gfi breaker for the heat pump. With all that being said I know our electric bill is going to drop significantly paying for the heat pump in one year compared to the cost of running the ecosmart pool 27kw heater... I'm not telling you to not buy it, but if you spend a little more upfront you can buy a way more energy efficient pool heater. We only use our pool in the late spring through sumer and end in the early fall so the heat pump works great for that. If you want a pool heater year round then you might have to look at other alternatives. Good luck on your pool heater search. ... show more

  • Works Awesome Works Awesome
Style: Smart POOL 18
The instructions are not great for pool heater so I wanted to explain how it works for people that are new to heater buying such as myself. I have an intex pool and actually spent more on this heater then the pool but I wanted to put my pool in my garage and see if it would work and it did. The heater is awesome. The heater does take 2 50 amps, the package says 40 and some things say 50, we used 50 and it works, if you are handy you can do it or you will need to hire an electrician, you cannot just plug this thing in. We spent about $200 on pvc pipe, wires and stuff to get this heater working so it will cost more then just the heater. We have a sandfilter and we are able to put it on N to make the heater run faster through the pump, when the heater runs through on filtration it does not run as fast. I hope the pictures help. It took an afternoon to get it all set up. Our heater would not turn on right away and it was because the flow was not fast enough. ... show more

  • It works great for about 1 month - I'm on my 3rd unit It works great for about 1 month - I'm on my 3rd unit
TERRIBLE DO NOT BUY. They told me after the unit stopped working after 6 weeks that hard water caused a complete decay of the elements and that every 2 months I should have washed them. Well, if it stopped working after 6 weeks, then how is that even possible. They said the warranty doesn't cover hard water. I said that the elements are covered under warranty and she said "no" they aren't. They can't just "say" that. I asked them to prove it and show me where it says anything about hard water and she said it doesn't. They simply do not honor their own product. Update again - My replacement has now stopped working. This elements inside are absolutely shot. They can't handle the chlorine. Update: I got a replacement unit and this one works great! I read the bad reviews, yet I still ordered this hoping it would work for me. It didn’t. The install was fairly easy as I had my electrician do it and my plumber. It worked great for two weeks. And then nothing. Then we go through the endless loop of terrible customer support. Customer support expects you to be a wizard at machinery. The flow meter is in the inlet and it is extremely difficult to take out and check and extremely difficult to put back in. After weeks of struggling with customer support inadequacy, she simply wanted to send me another flow meter, which was in perfect condition. I asked to speak with a supervisor and the lady said that she was going to tell me the same thing. I asked them to overnight the flowmeter because I have a short term rental business and this was going to cause a big problem for the weekend, and she said that I would have to pay for the overnight even though I spent weeks trying to solve this on the phone with them. I’ve had the unit for one month, end it is also already resting on the outside. I do not recommend this product. Beware. ... show more

  • A good idea, poorly implemented on the outside, customer service does not exists.
I bought this water heater for my 18000 Gal concrete pool from Warehouse Deals (Amazon) in January 2013. The installation is straight forward. I do recommend not cutting corners and getting the wire and breaker size they ask for. This thing does use a lot of power so you DO need 3x 50Amp breakers and three runs of (Red/Black 220 Volt) #8 Cable. Get #6 for longer runs. If your house does not have a 200Amp main breaker, stay away from this model. The water heater looks amazing, very modern and "eco-smart", however the case is very flimsy when open, and the design does not protect internal components properly from water and humidity. The 2" intake and exit port pipes you see on the pictures got rust spots the third day after installation. The case itself is powder coated but is made out of "regular" steel and it will rust quickly. I can already see rust signs on the bottom corners where the screws that hold it to the floor, as is expected, scratch the powder coating while mounting it. Having said that, the heater works very well and so far it does heat my pool from 70 to 85 in about 14 hour using a Pentair variable speed pump on speed 2 ( about 1500 rpms ). It does not use 27KW the entire time, what is does is that it tries to maintain a 7 degree difference between the water going in and the water going out. It has 3x 9000 Watts heating elements and they each have their own 50 Amp breakers and cable run from your panel. They work independently depending on the amount of water flowing. Once you reach a temperature less than 7 degrees from the SET temperature, the heating elements start to turn off and once you reach the temperature you want, only one element turns on from time to time to keep the water at your set temperature. This will vary depending on how much heat loss your pool has. The heater seems to be easy to service and the heating elements are very easy to access and replace if one of them burns. My solution to the rust was a spray can of an outdoor clear coating I bought at Home Depot and covered the entire thing from every angle, buttons, screws, everything. By blocking the contact of all metal parts with water and oxygen, I hope to delay the rusting process. I would love for Eco-Smart to make this thing out of stainless steel or aluminum, even if they had to increase the price a bit. The inside is made of stainless steel but I do not know what grade and how well it will stand to a salt water pool. I've called the company multiple times since purchased to ask if I can buy a heating element to keep as spare, 60 days later I still have not been able to speak to a human. I would not trust their claims of warranties. I do not expect this heater to last more than 5 years, but by my calculations even if i have to buy one every five years, it is still less expensive than spending $3000 or $4000 on a heat pump that will not last 15 years either. Also this thing is completely silent, compact, and it looks good. I have been turning the heater on every Friday afternoon and keeping it on for the entire weekend for two months now and my electric bill only increased by $120/month. Not bad! (In average the temperature increase needed has been about 15/20 degrees ( from around 70 to 85/90. I do recommend a solar blanket if you want to keep the heat a bit longer, because the pool drops from 85 back to 70 in one night!! (Average air temperature has been in the low 70's for February and March in Miami) I give this heater 4 star, understanding that it is not a product that will last very long and that the company behind it does not have support or a warranty you can trust. (I knew this going it from other customer’s reviews). It does heat up an 18000 Gal Pool in the time they estimated and it does work as long as you have the proper power requirements (again 150 amp main will not do, 200 Amp minimum). I will update this review in a few months. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Does better than I expected with a 20,000 gallon pool Does better than I expected with a 20,000 gallon pool
I bought the pool 27 and the spa 11 but this review is only for the pool 27. I have no idea how this little piece of equipment works so dang good. But it blew away my expectations. I knew it had horrible tech support. I also know it might not last over 2 years, but my options were limited. My pool is indoors. I didn’t want to run gas and vent it and worry about gas and carbon monoxide. So this was pretty much my only option. I could care less if this only lasts 3 years because it is 1/4 the Cost of a gas heater. I can replace it 4 times and still be in it less than a gas one. Now for the performance. My pool is 20,000 gallons. 2 ft on one end and 9 ft on the other. 40 feet long. 18 wide. This heater was not supposed to work. I’m 3000+ gallons over the specifications. However, on Friday I started with a pool temp of 62 degrees and by Sunday it was 85. In 48 hours it raised the temp almost 25 degrees and that’s absolutely amazing. I thought it would take a week to do that. It shown inlet temp and the outlet temp was always between 6 & 8 degrees warmer. After 48 hrs it was up to temp and turned itself off. Is my power bill going to be crazy this month? Yes! I know it will. But I believe now it’s up to temp it’ll maintain it well. It only seems to run a couple hours per day now to keep it at 86. If you’re buying this and asking If it’ll cost a lot to operate just know it will. But it doesn’t use gas and it’s way cheaper to buy. I am installing 72 solar panels on my house and I’ll never pay for another electric bill again. My hot tub will stay 101 with the eco spa 11, and my pool will stay 86 with the eco pool 27, and the ac will be running on all 4 units, both my Tesla’s will charge every day and I’ll never have to pay a penny in electricity again. So it all depends how you look at it. If you don’t have solar I’d think it’ll cost around 200 a month in electricity to operate it. But once again. 1/4 the cost of gas heater and no gas bill. So pick your poison and roll with it. So far I give this unit a solid 10/10. ... show more

  • Technical support is very limited. Technical support is very limited.

The unit was purchased with the understanding that there was some external damage. When the unit arrived, there was no evidence of damage anywhere on the enclosure or the internal components. A serious concern was now raised. A visual inspection was made and all components seemed in good repair. To ensure that that wiring was not tampered with, an email was sent to EcoSmart explaining the situation and the need for a schematic to verify the wiring. Note that this unit is powered by two 240VAC circuits at 40A each. It was very important to verify wiring before the unit was powered on. The first reply explained how to wire the two 240VAC circuits to the unit Another request was made. The reply was the installation manual. A third request was made and this time a troubleshooting scheme was sent. During this time, EcoSmart was informed that a hydrostatic test at 15PSI would be made to ensure that there were no leaks. No acknowledgement was made. Eventually, after painstaking analysis of the wiring, the unit was energized and it powered up. City water was fed through the unit after 5 minutes to try to initiate a heating phase. It would not turn on. A fourth email was sent requesting a minimum flow rate. No reply. Two more emails were sent and no reply. Style: Smart POOL 18
Initial unit once installed did not work. Technical support was not helpful and unable to resolve/identify problem. Company did send a replacement unit, however reinstalling the unit was left up to me. Electrical Installation is required to be performed by a licensed electrician, whose company name and license number is required on the warranty/registration form. The replacement unit is now up and running in my 7,000 gallon pool. The unit was able to raise the water temperature approximately 1 degree per hour. The unit is not energy efficient, but given the cost and limited use, I believe it is a good trade off. Prospective purchasers should be aware that they will need to closely monitor chlorine levels that could damage the unit and void any warranty. ... show more
