    • Surprisingly Good Metal Detector!
Style: Single Metal Detector
First of all, I am beginning detectorist. I did a lot of research. After reading a bunch of reviews and watching a lot of online videos about a bunch of different devices I decided to give this machine a shot. I am not at all disappointed. I am a big "bang for your buck" kind of guy. This thing has the most high end features and best reviews that I could find in this price range. If you want a good starter detector and don't want to spend a ton of money, this is your machine. Relax and buy it. You'll be happy with it. For a more detailed review, keep reading. I received my MT-XR a few weeks ago. It was super easy to assemble and seems well made. It is really lightweight and easy to swing for extended periods of time without your arm getting too tired. The aluminum (?) tubing seems strong and the cam locks are sturdy. I put mine together in about 5 minutes. My only qualm is that the 9v battery connector is the old 80's "lanyard" type and not a drop-in style, but even that connetor seems sturdier than normal. My first test was in my backyard. I turned it on and almost immediately it found an old nail about 4-5 inches down. After finding 2 or 3 more nails I figured it worked well enough to take with me on vacation to the beach. Out on the beach, I first tried it down on the wet sand with everything wide open (sensitivity up all the way, looking for all metal types). It went a little bonkers. I used the discrimination feature to get rid of ferrous metals and that helped a lot, but I still got a lot of false positives, so I turned down the sensitivity. That helped a little, too. I decided to give the dry sand a try because I had heard that wet sand can cause some interference with detectors. The dry sand really made a difference! I still discriminated out the ferrous metals, set the sensitivity down a notch from the top and after that I was finding all sorts of coins, can tabs, matchbox cars, etc. While I didn't find any gold rings or diamond necklaces, I think I might have if I had stuck with it long enough. Overall, it was a great first experience. Tips: Play around with the settings until your false positives are at a minimum. Try to not brush the sand with the sensor ring - it makes it sound off all kinds of crazy stuff. Hold he ring down to the ground before turning the unit on - it helps with the automatic ground balancing and minimizes false positives. If you get a signal, go over the same patch of ground several times before digging - this will verify something is there and save you from unneeded digging. Get a pack of rechargeable 9v batteries with a charger - they are about 20 bucks for 4 batteries and will pay for themselves many times over. Get the Dr. Otek Pin Pointer - That little thing works great, plus, DR Otek sends you a 15% off coupon that you can use towards it. Pros: Inexpensive Well Built Lightweight Works Well Lots of High-end Features Battery life is pretty long (at least 3-4 hours) Cons: The arm strap is a little too small The 9v connector is a little flimsy The learning curve is a little steep, but once you get used to it, it works great Not too great on wet sand (so far - maybe I need to figure out better settings) Summary: I think I made a great choice. Style: Single Metal Detector
If your new to this activity or looking for a new upgrade I would recommend the DR. ÖTEK MT-XR for sure. I’m going to keep it simple and make a list of why I recommend this product with the pros and cons and try my best to list some photos as well! FIRST THOUGHTS: -PACKAGING: was outstanding (5.0) -ASSEMBLY:was very easy and extremely durable materials directions are included for those who can’t figure it out (5.0) -USER MANUAL: is very detailed and even supplies a Quick Start page in blazing orange paper so no has a excuse to mess up. (5.0) -WEIGHT: this thing is ridiculously light! (5.0) -COMFORT: 3 easy settings for forearm and extremely comfortable. Hand grip seems a little soft for life span but extremely comfortable currently (5.0) -BATTERY: 9v included which is always nice/ as for Battery life is down 1 bar out of 4 on the screen after about 4 hours in it. (Unrated) -SCREEN: came with protective peal off and is very easy to operate with pictures and well labeled descriptions and settings including a: -All Metal (to help pick out all those unwanted metals out of the ground) -Memory (your choice of metal search) -Jewel mode (for all those unwanted bottle caps/nails) -Discrimination mode (which is always helpful) -Backlight for night detecting which is a major upgrade! -Headphone jack: so it is capable with any headphones that are comfortable that your used to using with your oldler iPhones. (Not a massive plug like some or any at all) -Volume control: has 3 different modes which makes it convenient. -Tones: each category of metal sounds it’s personal tone to indicate you what material is being detected. -Sensitivity: you have a few settings to adjust the sensitivity. -Pinpoint (PP) comes in handy but isn’t always the most accurate for me. (My only complaint so far) Overall screen (4.9) COIL: WATERPROOF! and has a great reading output. I did a test and we’re finding metals around 7 1/2 inches not buried. And so far the deepest I found buried was around 6 inches down (still great for around $100 machine) as for the pinpoint i’m still going to work with it and see what I can figure out. Still going to give it (5.0) for being waterproof and well built for the price WARRANTY: 2 years!!! (5.0) OVERALL: I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product even with the pinpointer off on my device to anyone that is trying to buy a good reliable detector and an amazing price. I literally found 23 items in a hour. You should still have a hand held pinpointer for digging reasons anyway. I’d recommend Dr. Öteks but I haven’t tried there’s but i’m sure it’s up to par after seeing the quality of this product.
