I never watch TV or subscribe to any digital content platforms. I just watch YouTube. But, there are times when having some free OTA local channels would be nice, like watching some local sports. Since I have a multi-monitor setup I decided to use one to watch some TV when I don't need to use multiple monitors at once. This digital converter box worked right out of the box. No complicated setup. You WILL NEED to buy a separate HDTV antenna. This converter box will then convert the signal from the antenna so you can hook it up to any monitor via HDMI. Took about a minute to scan for channels and I get roughly 100 channels (San Francisco Bay Area). Picture quality is good. I'm connecting it to my second monitor which is 1440p and the 1080p output from this box looks fine for general watching. Even though I'm use to the 4K quality on my main monitor, 1080p is more than enough for watching local channels Operational speed is more than acceptable with channel switching and browsing being prompt. Easy to change channels and look through the channel list. There are no buttons on the box so you'll need to use the remote which DOES NOT come with batteries. Two AAA batteries are required.. The box does get a bit warm, but nothing super hot. Overall, a cheap and simple way to watch some free local channels. I did not test any of it's recording and USB capabilities.

Combined with a DTV antenna and an HDMI monitor (or TV), you have a decent HDTV. Remote worked well (2 AAA batteries not included) with included IR receiver. Setup was easy. Picture quality was as expected on my antenna on my 720p, 1080i, 1080p stations. Box included all of the needed cables (USB charger and cable, HDMI output, composite RCA AV output). TV station IDs provided for ease of access. I did not try to setup control of my TV. A few nits: 1. Favorite station tagging required me to specify news, movies, etc. not just favorite. 2. Recording to USB FAT32 stick started easily but I could not find a way to stop a recording without pulling the USB stick. Exit did not work, pressing Rec again did not work. I could not enter the Menu when a recording was in progress. There must a way to stop a recording in progress but nothing in the printed guide. I will send email to ZBOX58. 3. PVR recording file format is mts - Windows 11 media player will not play audio due to missing codec. Adding codecs to Windows 11 can be a problem (security). Fortunately VLC to the rescue.

UPDATED April 2025: Decreasing from 2 down to 1 star. It's been a few months. Now the unit frequently and mysteriously drops some channels from my Favorites list, especially the local ABC and PBS channels. Those get very strong signals too. It also will drop scheduled recordings and my weekly programs will not record because it's disappeared from the To-Do list. Sometimes it will drop the Favorite channel that I have a scheduled recording for, but still have it programmed to record only without the channel showing. Therefore, it doesn't record anything since it doesn't know what channel to record from. It will not allow me to Edit it and add the channel back. I have to delete the programming completely and start over. Essentially, this only works as an antenna decoder. All the other functions frequently fail. UPDATED FEB 2025: Been using this a few weeks now. The unit has since started acting up: 1. Now sometimes it will shut down by itself while watching TV and then either reboot or stay off. If it stays off, the remote won't turn it back on so I have to unplug the box and force a reboot. 2. Video and audio will get out of sync where video is delayed slightly. This is when watching live TV. Haven't recorded enough on it to see if it routinely happens on DVR. Rebooting the box is the only fix...until it starts happening again. I have my antenna split to another TV with built-in tuner. This delay doesn't occur on that TV so I know it's the ZJBox. 3. DVR recordings and live TV show pixelations now and then even with very strong signal strength. Again, my other TV with built-in tuner doesn't do this. For $20, you get what you paid for. I just wish someone would make a simple tuner/decoder that just stays active all the time without a "brain" that has to boot up. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Finally cut the satellite cord, but still needed to be able to watch local broadcasts and record occasionally. My TV has a built-in tuner, but my components are in another room and I didn't want to fish coax cable through the attic/wall then take the TV off the wall to connect the coax, etc. I opted for this tuner so I could install it at the receiver where my satellite box was and am using it with a wireless IR blaster relay. Setup was pretty straightforward. However, I docked a star because there are no instructions on how to use the recording features and the buttons you use for other functions don't always match what's written/shown on the instruction sheet. So, I had to go through quite a bit of trial and error and figure things out. I was finally able to get it all set up with favorite channels and am using a PNY 256G USB drive for the recordings. So far, everything seems to be working. Things I managed to figure out about the recording/DVR: 1. Instructions say the guide will show you upcoming shows 14 days in advance, but it actually only goes 23 hours ahead. So you can't schedule to record a show in advance until the day before when the show actually appears on the guide. I did test it on a show that was starting in 20 minutes and it recorded perfectly. 2. Hitting the Record button will start recording what you're currently watching, BUT you have to hit the STOP button to stop recording. As far as I can tell, it will not stop recording until you press Stop. 3. You can schedule a recording in advance, but it must be at least 2 minutes before the show starts. Otherwise you'll get a notice on the screen that says it's not available or something. 4. While watching live TV, the playback buttons will allow you to pause/rewind/fast forward. Screen calls it a Time Shift. Not sure how long you can keep it paused and such though. Honestly, if you just need a very basic HD/1080p tuner with DVR capability, then this will work just fine. I didn't want all the added features like streaming to other TVs or installing apps/paying for subscriptions with the $100+ price of fancier tuners. For this price of $20 though, you have to be willing to deal with the VERY rudimentary interface and lack of recording instructions.

I bought this last year, but didn't start using until recently, when my 15-year old Magnavox DVR finally gave up for good. The ZJBOX is a pretty decent replacement (and much cheaper), although there are areas where it could use improvement. The old Magnavox was particularly good at locking onto the digital signal and minimizing disruption. I don't know if it had some sort of advanced buffering to smooth the signal, or just better components to minimize interference, but stations were more stable when viewed through the DVR than directly from the television. The ZJBOX reception seems slightly less stable than direct to TV. For stations with strong signals, it's not a problem, but for the weaker ones it can be hit-or-miss. The ZJBOX doesn't have a pass-through coaxial connector. So if you want to watch something else while recording, you'll probably need an external splitter (but those are simple and cheap). The Magnavox was always recording to a 6-hour buffer. So if you were watching and suddenly had the urge to back up and re-watch a section, you could do it. For ZJBOX you need plan ahead, and press pause first, before it will start recording. One thing I like better about the ZJBOX is its handling of closed captions on recording. At first I thought it wasn't possible, because it wouldn't record at all when CC was enabled. But if I record without them, I can turn them on or off during playback. Note CC is labeled "sub-t" on the remote. The remote is not compatible with my universal remote, and it is not very intuitive to use. You can't get to every function simply by navigating menus. The color-coded buttons are essential. And most actions require a very specific sequence of buttons. (If you are recording, I think you need to pause first before you can stop. To delete, you have stop the playback, then hit the delete key, then OK twice ... things like that.) If you like experimenting, this is the remote for you. I've had no problem recording to a flash drive. I try nothing complex--just schedule recording based on time and channel. For me, it uses about 3.3G per hour of recording. One thing that would've been nice is a way to be able to jump in larger increments during playback. (It takes a while to move through a 3-hour video, even at 32X. A way to jump 15-minutes at a time would be convenient.) It's also awkward when I turn the unit off, and it forgets where I was last watching. The playback of the video can also get cropped in weird ways, if you are not careful about choosing the right aspect setting.

I bought this to watch NFL games for free on my projector. This things works great when you combine with Phillips Rabbit ears antenna. I managed to pick up 49 channels around Philadelphia metro area. Admittedly, 43 of them are useless but you can get all the local channels to watch sports games live and for free without the lag you get from internet streaming. Note: to pick up Philly ABC6 which notoriously has a crap low frequency UHF band, you will need a rabbit ears style antenna and not the rectangle one you stick on the window. Then for your tuner to find ABC6, you have to stretch out the ears completely out and flat near a window, and aim it toward Roxborough NW Philly, where the broadcast towers are. The rest of the standard local channels, CBS NBC FOX CW PBS Telemundo Univision, your antenna will find them pretty easily. For anyone in other cities, if you don't know where your broadcast tower is, just ask chatgpt, he will tell you. Attach both your tuner and rabbit ears antenna to your projector and BAM! Live NFL games on 130" wall. If you don't have a projector, get one, you will never want to watch live games on anything else, ever again.

Amazon’s pointer for ZJBox support website points to a domain that is for sale. Does not go to seller’s support contact site. The ZJBox learning mode instructions are simple enough. It learned the audio volume up and down for my Samsung just fine. However it did not learn the TV power on/off function. UPDATE: after four failed attempts, then writing this review, I tried again, this time it worked! The device was otherwise easy to install, learned my over the air digital broadcast TV stations to the limits of the antenna and is easy to operate. I did not employ the USB storage play, recording or scheduled recording features.

I have a Roku TV that suddenly stopped receiving live TV channels when though it's hooked up to my attic antenna (the "Live TV" selection simply stopped loading). I ordered this and it works perfectly right out of the box! Simple, straight forward, and easy to use. Although I only connected a flash drive thus far for pausing and rewinding, I'll hook up a larger storage drive for the DVR function later on. The user interface is very simple and clutter-free (as I like it!), so there are no confusing menus or seemingly useless functions. The included universal remote is a bonus, and is also easy to set up. For this price, and the small size of this thing, you simply can't go wrong!
