QUICK TAKE If you have a Smart TV that is disappointing you, do yourself a favor and get this. You will love it. WHAT I NEEDED Ok ok ok, I'll admit that my Samsung Smart TV is ancient, by most folks standards. It was a display model that I got about 5 years ago and I've always been a bit disappointed by the Smart TV capabilities as they have always been very slow and glitchy. I was never sure if this was the fault of the Apps or the TV, but it took me a very long time to purchase a Roku and that was a dumb decision on my part because this little device has TOTALLY changed the way I use my TV. SETUP The kit is pretty straightforward and simple. Hook up to the HDMI, stick the receiver on the TV, and initialize the setup. At first I was having issues because when I hooked everything up, the Roku setup couldn't successfully access my WiFi. Initially I was super frustrated and assumed it was the Roku's fault, but at some point I realized that my 2G wifi was down and this was the culprit. Apparently Roku and Ring doorbells and probably a bunch of other devices all can only run on 2G, not 5G, so I had to call my cable company to get that going again and once I did the Roku was able to connect and utterly stupefy me with how wonderful it is. PERFORMANCE So far I have had zero issues with any of these apps, which I used to have constant crash issues with on my Smart TV. For example, my Hulu app would always randomly close and would never allow me to go from episode to episode without an error message. No issues at all with the Roku. I also love that the Roku is always ready, whereas my Smart TV I would turn it on and then have to wait about 3 minutes while the TV "warmed up" and even then usually the first time I'd try to open Hulu it would just crash and I'd have to restart. I love that there are so many available channels, although I was disappointed to find out that my cable provider and Roku have been at an impasse and I can't use the Roku to replace my cable box (hoping that happens someday soon so I can stop wasting money on that box, too). OVERALL Absolutely 100/10 would recommend, this little thing has brought me so much happiness for such a reasonable price. Bravo, Roku, Bravo! I've used this pretty much every single day since I bought it! It's a great little device that can turn any TV into a smart TV, essentially. Setup was straight-forward and there weren't any activation fees. I also like that you can download the Roku app on your phone and use it as a remote too! Also, if your TV has a USB port, you can use it to power the device instead of trying to find a plug that's within reach of the rather short cord it comes with. I wish this model had volume controls included on the remote. I know some later models have this feature, but this was the cheapest option I could afford and it gets a little tedious having to use a separate remote just to change volume. It also doesn't come with a power button like the later models do, but you can turn your TV off on the homescreen, so this doesn't bother me as much. I also wish it had some other way of being mounted than the sticky strip it comes with, or at the very least have it include an extra sticky strip. I move my Roku around the house and the sticky strip doesn't work anymore. However, it adhered very well when I first applied it, which is why I wouldn't mind having extras or even having an option to buy replacement strips from Roku since theirs are pretty good quality! Or even if they could use velcro or something similar that doesn't wear out drastically over time. If you're looking for a cost-effective way to upgrade your TV, I highly recommend getting this device! Over a year later and it's still functioning just as well as the first day I bought it. First of all let me say as far as the device, it's easy to set up, works great and seams a little faster than my older Roku Streaming sticks 3500, BUT IT ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT WORK WITH A 10 YEARSOLD VIZIO TV, THAT WORKED WITH MY ROKU STREAMING STICK. I bought this Roku Express just to upgrade and to put my older streaming stick in guest bedroom. But not matter what I did, after plugging in , correctly I might add, it would keep coming up on screen with no support. I researched Roku support community and it turns out many people were having this same problem. I did all of the troubleshooting that was suggested, checking cable tightness, plugged in my old one and changed from auto detect, to 1080 and 720 it made no difference. Since it is older and the TV itself doesn't have a way to manually upgrade firmware, There was nothing else to do. I took Roku Express, in the spare bedroom, plugged it in and in literally seconds the setup screen was on and I had it setup in a couple of minutes. Then I tried it on my Vizio again , same thing , no support error message on screen. Then I unplugged it and put in on my Haier TV which is also older model, and it worked perfectly. So if you have an older Vizio you might want to check and see if it's compatible. I couldn't find this information on the Roku site but it should be out there somewhere. Anyway the device itself is really nice, quick setup on compatible TV, but did not work on older model Vizio. ... show more

I bought this Roku to expand into a fourth room, and I was happy to see that it was offered at a fraction of the cost of my other Roku models. Of course, this bare-boned unit asks for you to sacrifice some of the options on the more expensive units, such as a TV on/off button, volume control, and an earphone plug-in on the remote. All of these minor issues are easily solved by using both the Roku and the TV remotes or by employing the free Roku mobile app for iOS or Android. A major issue for some consumers might be the 2.4 GHz wireless connection. After several days of use, we have seen no issues. Streaming has been perfect, no lagging or interruptions, and load time seems no longer than any of the other Roku units we own. Installation was easy and there should be no hiccups for the majority of users. This was the first time that Roku asked me to sign up with a Google account, so it took the extra few minutes for me to set that up, but otherwise it was no harder than usual. If you are looking for a solid unit and a great price, you can't do better than this unit. Five stars. ... show more

I just received this Roku player yesterday, and set aside some time to install and set it up today. I got it to more or less convert an older "dumb" TV into a "smart" TV for watching mostly Amazon Prime Video and Netflix in a bedroom. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, and didn't feel I would need anything advanced, so at the low price of about $25 I decided to give this a try. Aside from a bit of head-scratching trying to remember how to set a TV I hadn't used in years to display its HDMI inputs (not the Roku's fault), the installation and setup was quick and easy. I'd estimate that I spent a total of 30 minutes, which included the connection, signing the device into my wifi, the device updating itself, creating a free Roku account using the link supplied on the TV screen, and signing the device into my streaming services. I was also pleasantly surprised that I got some free channels from Roku. I didn't do it yet, but I may enable the feature that allows me to control the Roku with my iPhone. The player works like a charm and I couldn't be happier with it for the price. If you feel that you need your Roku remote to control your TV as well, you are going to have to bump up a couple of notches in price, but this simply was not a concern for me. If I had to make one very slight criticism of the product, it is that the small strip of double sided tape they supply for mounting the player wouldn't stick to anything for more than a minute or two. So I mounted my device using electrical tape, until I can get some better double sided tape. Be aware that there are some scam sites that will try to charge you an activation fee for your Roku. The instructions address this, and the problem can be avoided by using ONLY the link that appears on your TV setup screen from Roku for activation. ... show more
