For occasional writes for things like backups and whatnot, this will be a good drive. It's important to understand that the write performance advertised is a buffered performance using a faster internal storage up to a limit (I think around 100GB for the 500GB model). While in use, it will reorganize things on the fly. Basically, this is designed for writes in decent sized chunks, but don't expect tons of performance if you're looking to just immediately fill up the entire drive. The silly thing is the X8 is not much more expensive. So if you really need this to perform well, spend a little extra on the X8 model. If you need to write huge amounts of data at time in a timely manner, use the X8 model. If you are using this for professional needs, definitely spend the extra money on the X8 model because when time is money, saving a bit of time is going to more than compensate for the added cost. If you're just a home user needing a bit of backup or extra storage, but performance isn't a big deal while the modest savings will be a bigger benefit, then this X6 will do everything you need. I've had a good experience with durability of Crucial products so I feel confident this will endure my usage without an issue for as long as I need it. I've used several Crucial SSDs over the years, including SATA, NVMe, and I have an X8 USB drive as well. I can't recall any of them failing, yet. I used AOMEI Disk Speed Test, and with a new USB cable, connected to the single slot in the back of my 3.2 USB card, this 4TB disk read at 805MB/s and Writes at 683.32 MB/s reads with 35% of the disk used. It is faster than my 2TB SATA drives and 1TB WD Element. With my motherboard and/or an older 3.0 USB card, and an old cable, this drive was iaround 32 MB/s R/W. I strongly suggest anyone interested in this SSD to buy the latest USB 3.2 2nd gen USB card and a good cable! The only thing which is a major is the write speed. It is nowhere as advertised. After the 100gb, the speed drops. As an SSD, I'm not impressed. I only got this because of yhe portability and I'm on a budget

I need more space than my machine has built-in, I had been using a 3.5 2tb external hard drive but it was noisy and required a power adapter. the crucial is tiny, cut a credit card into a square to give you a general idea of the footprint, its about as thick as an ink pen, so its not a desk hog and theres no sound. and that means obviously minimal power draw. being solid state there almost no reaction lag to opening files, which is a big plus. its not perfect, it could use a activity led, and its not the fastest external drive Ive had. it transfers at a decent rate for small files and when the buffer is exhausted it slows notably (peaks at 700mb/s but drops to 50-60). but its one of the most value priced drives out there and still an improvement over the old hard drive. ... show more
