Used about 5 times, works great. Easy to clean. Gets REALLY hot, which is great for steaks. Better than the price would suggest

  • decided that this method was the best way to go--but their cost was quite a bit ...
Color: Light Grey
I purchased this grill because our old grill we used for camping was not working. This grill can be used at home or in the camper as it is portable. I had seen these "infra-red" grills whose design looked to be far more efficient and based on reviews I'd seen, decided that this method was the best way to go--but their cost was quite a bit more than the simple grill I was looking for. But when I came across this new model while going through the store for some building materials I thought, hmmm. While this little grill costs more than some full-sized "standard" models, its portability and design made it a practical (two for one) choice for us. The Grill2Go which gets very hot, very quickly. Of course the Grill2go is, by its very nature and design, a small portable grill so of course there is no table, side burner, place to hang things or built in stand. For its intended purpose, however, I find it just about perfect--compact, efficient, and well designed. . Now we'll keep both other grills (the big one for times when we have a large number of people around the patio and the small one for local picnics and family get-togethers, but because the Grill2Go easily handles a half dozen hamburgers here at home and can be carried along when we're off on the road, it will be the primary choice both here at home and on the road. But since I bought it I've been using the old full-sized grill as a stand (fits right on the grill's grate) because there was still snow piled up all around the deck making that my only alternative. This was not something I wanted to make permanent, and when the snow finally melts, I'll need a table. And now I'm in the process of making a table that will have an aluminum surface, space underneath for the 20 pound cylinder we use here at home, hanger hooks, additional storage, and wheels. And while the Grill2Go looks like it could easily live outside, I've ordered a cover for the whole shebang. Bottom Line: This grill easily starts with one push of the button, evenly distributes heat, gives beautiful sear-marks and takes much less time to achieve perfect results--and with little or no flare-ups. And while it isn't a big thing, I'm please to report that I haven't lost any parts of a hamburger or pieces of chicken due to falling between openings of a standard grate! While we've only had this little grill for a few weeks, I can see that it is easy to maintain and will last a long, long time. There are few parts, and any that might need replacement are readily available and simple to install. If one will be using it in a way that makes a larger gas cylinder feasible, get a conversion hose (easily found wherever grills are sold) and go that route to save some money--but keep a couple of the smaller cylinders around for times when you'll be taking advantage of the portability...or when the large cylinder runs out unexpectedly. This is a well made, compact design that may be the ideal barbeque grill for a great many. ... show more

  • I may never use a conventional range again... This Grill is awesome! 5 STARS
Color: Light Grey
I'm hooked on TRU-Infrared products. I bought the TRU-Infrared turkey cooker last year. I figured the company who could help me cook a thawed 15# turkey almost to perfection in under 3 hours ought to be able to make a decent portable grill. I was / am not disappointed. I read thru a couple other reviews before buying this item, and I agree that there was a stink of the "new" burning off during the break-in process. I actually ran mine on HIGH for about 15 minutes, even tho the manual says to burn it in for 10 minutes. I bought the conversion / adapter cord to go to a 20# grill tank. I am planning on using this A LOT. I have used the 1# cylinders in the past for lanterns and cookstoves, and I do not like them. I literally went from taking my steak out of the fridge, seasoned it, and cooked it to what I believe was almost perfection in about 5 minutes! I have a 3200ft2 unheated and uninsulated machine shed with lots of places for fresh air to get inside. I set up a couple saw horses with a piece of plywood on top. I turned this baby up on HIGH for just a couple minutes, and it had the temp gauge pegged past 600 deg F. It does get and stay VERY HOT, VERY QUICKLY, so be careful! After the 15 minute burn off, I let it cool down to about 200 deg F, and then I cranked it back up again. It's about 45 deg F in my shed right now, but it took even less time (makes sense) this last time to heat back up. I cooked 5 prime strip steaks on HIGH from raw to delicious in 4 minutes--2 minutes on each side, and then another 30 seconds per side to burn in the sear marks for presentation for a total of 5 minutes. I have not tried putting wood chips on the grate, but I might try it sometime. I have a new smoker I'm breaking in tonite as well, so I have some hickory chips available. I like my steaks medium rare, and I would say that's what I accomplished. Steaks were seared on both sides and pink in the middle. I may try to cook some frozen steaks sometime, even tho the directions say to use thawed meat. I know I can cook frozen meat on my George Foreman and my NuWave Oven, but it may not be adviseable on this grill. I'll do some more research. Now that I have this grill and my turkey cooker, I may never cook on a conventional range again. I absolutely love the "flame" taste this grill cooks with, and the speed that it cooks is phenomenal. I paid $104 for the Grill. I almost pulled the trigger on the $50, yes $50 carrying case, but I just couldn't do it. Maybe someday I'll get tired of lugging this grill around without a case and it will be worth $50 to me, but not today. I really like the lid snaps, too. This grill seems to be super heavy duty. It is heavy, too, but I like that. If I ever change my mind (doubtful) about this grill, I will report back. 5 stars for now and probably forever. Go buy one, you will not regret it. I can't wait to cook on it this weekend at deer camp. ... show more

  • The Good and The Bad... The Good and The Bad...
Color: Light Grey
Bottom line is I am pretty darn happy with this grill ans would recommend to anyone who doesn’t mind a little upkeep. For more details, read on. The Good: This grill sears like nobody’s business, which is what I want in a grill. I have a full sized, 4 burner Tru-Infrared grill from Charboil as well. Living in a multi-floor home, it got cumbersome to lug all of my cooking utinsels, sauces, and food to grill downstairs to the big grill, especially for cooking for 2 people. But, when I did, I can’t ever remember a time where I didn’t wait for the big boy to heat up to at least 500 to grill. I don’t do low and slow on a grill. If I wanted that, I’d use my smoker or the oven. When I grill, I want those nice sear marks, a little char, etc on it. Otherwise I’d just bake my food. Now, I did read the reviews and saw this was a grill on steroids when it came to heat. I bought a Mr. Heater aftermarket regulator and did some tests. With the OEM regulator, the grill got to 600 in about 7 mins even on low. That’s a bit much. With the aftermarket regulator, it took a substantial while longer, reaching about 500 degrees on low. That was much better. When I add food to the grill and cook on low, Ive noticed it stayed around 400-425, which would be fine for chicken and pork chops. On high with the aftermarket regulator, got to 600 in less than 9 mins. The picture I attached is a decent sized skirt steak I used for Asada tacos. You can see that the grill did a superb job on getting the char ans flavor on the outside, but what you can’t see is that it maintained a gorgeous medium rare on the inside. This isn’t a 2 inch steak. It’s a relatively thin piece of meat. That’s awesome! The Bad: I’m not crazy about the so-called stainless grate. If it is stainless, it’s probably the lowest grade there is. I seasoned it as instructed, but after the first cook, I had left a little meat juice/residue on the grate by accident. By the next day, it showed signs of a little rust. Nothing major, just cleaned it off and reseasoned. The key to this grate is ensuring the wet residue is burned off, so I keep the heat on high for a few mins after I finish cooking, and to maintain it almost like a cast iron skillet. Add a little canola or coconut oil on it after you’ve burned off the residue, let it smoke up, and then you’re done. The other comments on the grease holes in the grate clogging up are true too. I now have a better grill brush that I use on it after cooking, but about 3-4 cooks in, I find I have to take the grate out and give it a wash. Again, not terrible, but not the lowest maintenance compared to porcelain coated cast iron grates. Summary: kinda sucks that I had to get an aftermarket regulator and get a maintenance routine for this grill. But for its performance, I’m ok with that. It’s a great little grill for my balcony, heats up way faster than my full sized grill, and gets an unbelievably good sear on my meats. I would buy it again. UPDATE: Made some chicken wings and chicken breasts on it finally. With the aftermarket regulator, was able to keep the temp around 350-400 and made some delicious chicken. So, this has the horsepower to mad-sear steaks, and the finesse to do chicken breasts right. Ps. I placed a few hickory wood chips on the grill to get a nice Smokey flavor to the chicken. YUM! ... show more

  • Great little overlanding grill, doesn't blow through propane Great little overlanding grill, doesn't blow through propane
Color: Light Grey
Well, Charbroil lives up to its name once again. This little grill was the perfect solution to my dilemma; which was how to downsize my camping footprint, without giving up a good steak? It has achieved and surpassed my expectations. The infrared grill really does help distribute the heat more evenly, and the thing gets downright hot. I saw a few others complaining about that, but to me - what's worse than a grill that's too hot? One that's too cold, by far! This one can be lowered easily and like with any new cooking appliance, one has to learn it's nuances. It didn't take me long. The first night I cooked burgers ALMOST to the right Mid-rare temp, but just a hair over. The next night I did grass fed steaks (which tend to overcook more easily than corn fed), and was able to achieve a perfect rare (our preference) without overcooking. The timing was easy to figure out. That's the steak you see in the picture. Cleanup was easy with the provided scraper, and the grease pan is simple to remove and wipe or dump out. Probably my favorite thing of all is the footprint of this grill. I wanted something smaller and lighter weight than my weber-Q without compromising cook space. This is specifically for camping so size and weight are highly important to me. Behind that, quality and functionality are key. This grill ticks all the boxes. I also love that it uses small propane canisters. I had a full one at the start of my most recent trip and never did go through it all, in spite of cooking three meals. It really was everything I was looking for. I will note that one of the little latches that you can use to secure the lid down during travel is a bit crooked, so it's a little harder to get that latch to pull down. But, the funny thing is I found that after discovering that, I never even thought to latch the lid for any reason. I carry it upright and it sets upright in my storage compartment, so I can't actually think of a reason it needs to be latched. Great buy, well worth the price! ... show more

  • Best Portable Grill Out There! But I Do Believe Experience Is Important. MUST READ! Best Portable Grill Out There! But I Do Believe Experience Is Important. MUST READ!
Color: Light Grey
So when our tailgate grill hit the graveyard a few weeks ago I searched all around for a replacement. Saw some reviews about the overpowering heat that came off this grill, but since I have been grilling for 25 years I figured NO WORRIES! Absolutely love this grill. It is without a doubt the best portable grill I have ever had, but there are some things the average BBQ'er needs to know. First and foremost like some reviews mention you ABSOLUTELY need to unbox it and immediately first thing heat it up on high heat. You will certainly get a strong whiff of plastic but that is not only normal but also a good thing. You want to let it run for at least 15 minutes on high heat mostly until the plastic smell dissipates. Once that is completed we spread wood chips all over the entire grilling surface (make sure you presoak your wood chips in a bucket). Before you put the wood chips down we rubbed the grilling area with a little canola oil, and as soon as you lay down the woods chips my oh my you can smell it seasoning itself almost within seconds. Remember.......YOU MUST MUST MUST FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS!! When you close the grill and you see a ton of smoke bellowing out of the grill that means everything is going perfect! The more smoke you see the more it is seasoning. You want to keep the lid closed and let the smoke do its thing until you do not see anymore smoke coming out of the grill. Yes that will take awhile in fact if I am not mistaken it was a good 20 minutes. Side note to the seasoning part I would recommend either cherry, apple, pecan, or hickory wood chips. Hickory will give off the most "smoke" taste. We did cherry because that is all the store had that morning and I am very pleased with the results. When it is done smoking you will notice that the wood chips have all turned to ash or close to it (totally normal). From that point on once it has totally cooled for an hour or so remove the grill grates and dump the ash out and you are now set to go. Sounds tedious but so so worth going the extra step. Now as far as the grill itself and as far as the reviews you probably read before stumbling upon mine. I do believe this is a 5 star grill whole heartedly! I know grills and I know my way around grills and I know a good or bad grill when I see one and this grill is awesome no doubt about it. However, there is a lot of truth to what others posted that you definitely need some experience because this grill (aside with being the best portable grill I have used) is also without a doubt the hottest running grill. When I say hot I mean hot! So how do you combat that? Well this is where experience is really important. You can buy the regulators like a lot of reviews say, but that will help control the heat a little but wont solve the entire issue because it still runs hot. Me myself I did not buy the valve because I personally find (whether your experienced or not) as long as you open the lid for a moment every time it starts to get to 500 degrees or hotter you will be totally fine. In fact lets be honest most people that grill are infatuated with opening the grill every 5 minutes anyway so its really not a big deal. However, cooking your food properly is where the knowledge helps. I would like to also add that whatever surface you put the grill on is safe from catching fire. The grill gets hot but the heat does NOT transfer onto the surface its on. I grilled for almost an hour the other day and the surrounding surface was fine. But with that in mind I also need to point out that the handle that you use to open/close the grill does absolutely get hot after awhile so you will definitely want a potholder, towel, or gloves when you open it. As far as the grilling goes as long as you follow everything I wrote and as long as you open the grill every time you see it hit 500 degrees you shouldn't have any issues at all. Everything I cooked came out perfect and I am confident to say that this grill is perfect for camping, tailgating, or whatever small grill needs you have. I absolutely love and can say hands down that I have been camping and doing all of the above for years and this grill blows away every grill I have ever portable grill I have ever used by a mile. If you follow the directions to a T that I wrote above you will be thrilled with your results. I have left a few pictures to help show what I was talking about. First picture is the grill while it was seasoning. As you can see the smoke is pouring out (that's a good thing). The second picture is what the grill looked like once the seasoning is done. As you can see the chips are pretty well burnt (again that is good). Last but not least is a picture of the corn I made when my son and I went camping. I did make sure to turn it every few minutes but as you can tell from the picture it came out YUMMY. I also have an amazing grilled corn recipe I would be more than happy to share. If you read this review and you have any additional questions please feel free to email me at [email protected] and I will be sure to answer them for you as promptly as possible. ... show more

  • Great little grill! No holes for things to fall through.
Color: Light Grey
The unique part of this grill is the grilling surface. Instead of the usual wire grate like other grills, this has a solid plate with vents in it to distribute the heat. The plate is corrugated to give you nice grill marks, but you can also put vegetables, shrimp and other smaller items directly on the grilling surface without having to worry about them falling through into the flames below. I also put soaked wood chips directly on the grill surface while cooking food to add a rich, smoky flavor. No need to light 'em with a propane torch first either. The grill is hot enough to get them smoking right away. This grill gets really hot! *REALLY* hot. One of the major complaints in other reviews is that it gets too hot and will burn the food. You have to change the way you do things a little bit to get the best results. Read the manuals that come with it and follow the directions. Oil and preheat the grill, then turn it down to the appropriate setting for whatever you are cooking. Watch your food closely, because it will cook lightning fast! If it is still too hot, prop the lid open to let it cool down some more, or open it briefly to let it cool off then close the lid again. Some recipes actually call for preheating the grill, putting your food on, bringing it to temperature and then then shutting the gas off entirely to let the retained heat do the rest of the cooking. This grill also has a little bit different maintenance than other grills, however it is really worth it to me for what a great job it does. Every use, once food is done cooking, you close the lid and turn it up to the High setting for 10-15 minutes, which will burn any residue to ash, just like a self-cleaning oven! There is a special tool that comes with the grill to scrape it clean once it has cooled down from this final burn-off. It is great at cleaning the ash from those little vents and keeping it working at top performance. Finally, rub the grill surface down with some kind of high temp cooking oil to season it. Over time, as you use it, the surface will imbibe the oil like a cast iron cooking pan and develop a nice almost non-stick surface. Finally, another complaint in previous reviews mentions that the grill fires up great for the first use then will not get over 250 degrees after that in subsequent uses. This grill is rather particular about the order in which you do things to light it up and shut it off. If this problem happens to you (like it did to me) the solution is fortunately an easy fix. Shut down the fuel to the grill and remove the supply line (or propane bottle) from the regulator. Leave it off for about a minute, then reattach everything. Then follow the lighting and shut off instructions for your grill *exactly* as they are listed in your users manual. The regulator that comes with this grill has a built in safety mechanism that can be triggered if you shut things down in the wrong order, choking down the fuel supply until it has been reset. It happened to me the second time I fired it up and then, once I figured out the cause and reset it, it has not happened since. This grill also has a drip pan that slides in and out the front, so it won't coat your cooking table with grease either. ... show more

  • Great grill
Color: Light Grey
Grill is very good quality, size is decent and the built is pretty good and sturdy. It gets pretty hot, so you have to be careful when cooking medium rare steaks because if you leave them 10 seconds too long, you end up with a well done steak. As for the grate, it’s very hard to clean properly so I would a 100% wish they sold normal cast iron grates and taking about grates, there is some stanbroil griddle insert for this grill. It would be nice if they would sell the griddles in stainless steel or cast iron material. Finally I would say it’s pretty easy to use and feels very good. The flame ingnition thing works perfectly. In my opinion this is a pretty good grill, but would be better with normal cast iron grates. ... show more
