Ultimately it's a hunk of wood to pound vegetables with. But it's the right size, and properly shaped for comfort during use, and the surface is smooth and finished, and it's HARD wood, not some cheap hunk of soft wood that will only break down and fray. It has a smooth end and a jagged end depending on your preference of which end to use for pounding. I prefer the smooth end for pounding because I don't want to have to clean out the jagged end. If you're going to pound stuff with this thing, do yourself a favor and get a nice big deep bowl to pound your produce in, so it doesn't splatter everywhere when you do your pounding. Now, pounding stuff is fun, but the real beauty of this thing is for compressing kimchi or sauerkraut down into the jar or crock before fermenting, so you don't have to put your hands into the ferment. So yeah, it's a hunk of wood, but it's a hunk of wood you really should have in your kitchen arsenal. And it comes in a nice box suitable for gifting. Would recommend.

I love this kraut pounder. I was tired of using whatever wooden spoon or tool that I had nearby but really didn't pack the veggies down the way they need to be. This tool made a quick job of it with very little effort. It made a lovely companion to my bamboo utensil holder and looks great on display. No hiding in a drawer for this kitchen gadget. This pounder feels solid and easy to grip. It has a bit of heft to it but not too heavy to use. I grabbed it one night when I had to go outside in a dark area and lacking any other means of self protection, I wielded my kraut pounder like a warrior. I came back home safe and sound. 5 stars and highly recommend for the kitchen too.

The day this arrived I was trying to stuff cabbage into jars with a wooden spoon. After washing, as a precaution, I finished the job using this kraut pounder. What a difference! The wide 2 1/2 inch smooth end fit nicely with some slack into a wide mouth jar and compressed the cabbage evenly down into the jar. The other 2 inch end has a deep cut diamond pattern for pounding. The pounder is made of Acacia Wood hardwood, is dense, 3 piece seamless laminate , and beautiful. It's so easy to clean up I don't ever see a need to run it through the dishwasher. I swear it's longer than 12 inches, but it's not. I'll be buying another one for a christmas present along with a fermenting kit for a relative.

I bought this to can sauerkraut, but I love that it has a rough and smooth side, so I can also use it for other things. It fits nice in my hands, is easy to use and looks beautiful sitting on my counter.

No longer do I have to use my hands as a plunger to push the food down into the jar or to remove all those bubbles. It is far more sanitary and I will never go back. These are very useful, very easy to clean and I especially like that the smaller end has a deep pattern that grips the food as you are applying pressure. Love it. Highly recommend.
