We already have a larger cast iron skillet but always wanted to get a smaller one for when I make items to bake in the oven. I searched out some options and found this NeoForge 9 Inch Cast Iron Skillets with Teardrop Handle so I ordered it up and it arrived in a few days. It came in a box, which had a bit of damage, and in bubble wrap but the pan was perfectly fine. It came with instructions on how to season the skillet, so after a good wash, I used some cast iron seasoning to spread all over and then I baked it for a good hour to lock in the seasoning. Having done a lot of cooking with a cast iron pan, I know all about the seasoning process and how to cook on it and clean it. I love how you can use this skillet on various cooking surfaces and at our house, we have an electric flat cooktop. Trying this one out, it heats evenly and gives food the perfect sear. I tried it out with some shrimp the other night and it cooked well and the food did not stick and ended up being quite tasty. Clean up was a breeze with a bit of soap and water and oil after it was dry. I think people are afraid of these pans as most think you can not use soap at all, but most experts I have read about said our modem soap is fine and I quote ”if its okay to use on a duck, it’s okay to use on a cast iron pan!” The pan is much lighter than our larger pan but as a cast iron pan, it is still heavier than normal pans but certainly durable and will hold up for all kinds of cooking. I have used my other cast iron in the past where I start the meal on the stove, then bake or broil the food afterward and the pans are meant for that. I haven’t tried this new pan out like this yet but will be sure to report back if it doesn’t hold up as expected. As this is a smaller, lighter pan, we were also thinking of taking with us to keep in our camper this summer, to use on our propane stove or even use on our flattop stove to make side dishes. It is also nice that it has a spout to use when making food with sauces or dripping, for easier pouring. One thing I want to try out is to make corn bread in the skillet, as I hear that it is a great way to make it. Overall, I think this is a pretty great option that I know will last forever and something I can even pass down to my kids. Plus, for the price, you can’t go wrong, as of the time of this review, you can get this for more than half off and under 15 bucks.

This pan comes unseasoned, which wasn't a surprise. They often do and I noted the detail in the listing. It does come with a card detailing how to season it. The instructions leave a little to be desired. The temperature for baking the oil onto the pan to make the coating ("season" it) is a little low at 350F. Also, not all oils will work well. You need an unsaturated oil or fat so that it can link up and form the coating. Saturated oils like coconut will not work. (In fact, my experience cooking with coconut in cast iron is that it needs to be alternated with other oils to maintain the coating enough to not stick.) I was surprised by the height of this pan. This 9" size is 9 inches along the bottom and 10 inches wide at the top of the flare. However, it's only 1.5 inches from the bottom to the top. That's extremely shallow. I did manage to get it to hold all my corn bread, though. The iron is not the thinnest I've come across, but it's not very thick either. This means it might be a little heavier than necessary and weight can make it harder to handle. The surface is smooth-ish as it should be. I've encountered some cheap cast iron that was rough and took a lot of seasoning to become usable. This just needs a layer or two. The handles are nice. It was the second handle that made me want it. Every once in a while you just need that little bit of extra holding when getting stuff into the oven. With being so shallow, it's less likely I can get enough into it to need that second handle, though. The handles don't have anything silly on them to keep from heating up so they can be used in the oven. That's exactly how I want it. As it came, it had bashed its own box and was getting in some good knocks on the shipping box. This didn't hurt it one bit because it's cast iron.

This is a nice, compact cast iron skillet that’s great for smaller meals or side dishes. The 8-inch size is perfect for things like eggs, single servings, or reheating leftovers without pulling out a full-size pan. It heats evenly the way you’d expect from cast iron and retains heat well, making it great for stovetop, oven, or even grill use. The build feels solid and durable, and the teardrop handle is a nice design touch—it’s easy to grip and gives you a bit more control when moving the pan. Like most cast iron, it’s on the heavier side for its size, but that’s part of what makes it perform well. It does require the usual cast iron care. You’ll want to make sure it’s properly seasoned and dried after washing to prevent rust. Depending on how it arrives, you may want to add an extra layer of seasoning before first use. Overall, this is a reliable little skillet that performs exactly how cast iron should. It’s especially useful if you want something smaller and versatile for everyday cooking or camping.
