Best SOHO printer/scanner/copier/fax I've ever used.

This is hands-down the best SOHO printer I've ever used. VERY VERY fast to print. By the time I hit print and turned around to get it the page was laying on the tray. Double sided print, scan, fax, copy - all work very well, and do it quietly. Even has a Power Save mode. Scan only works up to 300 dpi, I think. Not good for digital photos. It's also a b/w printer. Can't comment on cartridge life because I'm still using the sample that came in the box - I don't print very often. This thing is for general, small-office use. Print quality is pretty good, copy quality a little lower than print but still very usable for its purpose. Fax setup and use is extremely easy and I love it. It can be used with a regular phone line without using a software interface to fax. Some reviews comment on non-compatibility with Apple products. Here's my experience: I use this printer (after installing the drivers, of course) on my iMac flawlessly over a wireless connection. Very fast and basically awesome. I also use this device from 2 different PCs running W7 with absolutely no issues. Here's how you set it up: 1. Read the manual (RTFM). 2. Install the drivers. 3. Make connections. 4. Configure device. 5. Use it. Simple as that. I've never used all features on a multi-function printer that I've owned until this one. They all simply work with no wrestling around with it. The only thing about Apple products that I've read but have no experience with is that it doesn't work with iPad or iPhone. I don't know about that because I haven't tried it. But don't believe the reviewer who says you need a specific router in order to use this device wirelessly with any device because it simply isn't true. This is the best home office printer you'll ever buy. It does have an "office-type" look. If that bothers you then look elsewhere. But it IS black and white, relatively quiet, and has a small footprint. What it saves in desk space it takes up in vertical space. Just be aware. Works very well for home use

May 28, 2014 update: I am not a computer geek and have very straightforward needs for a printer and do not want to spend a lot of time figuring out how to work it. This is my own personal printer in my office, and after a year, I do love it because it never jams, loads paper very easily, and responds immediately to printer controls, whether from a Word document or from the internet. This is a real workhorse and very dependable. We are home users of a laser printer, and our last one ran for over 20 years (actually still works but is super slow and sometimes cranky). The Canon was appealing to us because of the brand and price, under $200 including super saver shipping, and it did not disappoint. We know from experience with laser printers that it is important to shake up the cartridge before insertion in the printer to insure even printing. Then this should be done about every 500 copies or eventually copies will become streaked or blurred. Initial setup is very easy when following the instructions and removing every one of the orange plastic parts. My husband missed one and ran into error messages immediately. Apparently this is a common issue, and Canon technical support gets five stars for promptly diagnosing and fixing the problem. Although there is an installation CD included, my husband did not use it and instead went directly to the Canon website and downloaded the latest software version. In either case, until the software is loaded, the plug and play feature will not operate. If you plan to network the printer to more than one computer, you will have to download the software from the Canon website to each individual computer; each download only takes a couple of minutes. After that, interface is accomplished through your computer's print protocol and on ours was immediate and seamless. As far as the performance is concerned, printing is greased lightning fast, and the copies are crystal clear. We tried Xeroxing some documents, and the process is very user friendly, quick, and the copies are great. If and when we fax anything, this review will be updated. The energy saving feature is a nice touch, shutting down the display between uses. The printer's limited warranty is for one year; registration can be done on the Canon website. A Canon replacement cartridge (rated 4 ½ stars) for this printer sells on Amazon for $73.15 including super saver shipping and yields approximately 2,100 copies. Remanufactured cartridges are currently available through 4inkjets for $28.79 plus shipping, or buy two of them and get free shipping. ... show more

Ran into a glitch - but it's resolved, yea!, so 4+ stars

Unfortunately, our MF4880DW seems to have a problem. Copies and scans done from the glass are fine. But when the auto document feeder is used, every resulting page has a thin vertical line running from top to bottom. This limits my rating to 3 stars at this time. I'll see how Canon and Amazon handle this, and hopefully update this review at a later time. I hope it's a simple fix; it comes in a mighty big box, and shipping it back would be a hassle. 2/16/2013 Update: I'm pleased to report that it appears I've solved the problem without needing any help. I've raised my rating to four stars. Here's what I found. Originals fed by the automatic document feeder are scanned by a narrow window located to the left of the platen glass. This window has a plastic cover over it that the manual calls a "transparent sheet" - strange name, but that's what they call it. It is removable for cleaning as follows: Position your finger on the words "If streaks appear..." in the instructions found above the platen glass on the left side. Slide your finger left from there until it runs into a little tab that sticks up. There is a little well next to the tab where you can reach a finger underneath to pop it loose. With the tab released, the "transparent sheet" lifts off. I cleaned it and the glass below it using static free, plastic safe computer screen cleaner; though a cloth dampened with a little distilled water will probably work fine too. I did not see any dirt, but after cleaning, the vertical line is gone. There must have been a little piece of debris from manufacturing stuck in there, just big enough to make a one pixel wide line on my copies. Remember to put the "transparent sheet" back where it belongs, or the document feeder will jam. I hope this helps if someone else has the same issue. Cleaning this part is not covered in the manual. There are many things I like about the MF4880DW. It is fast, and it has a plethora of features. I appreciate Canon including an envelope feeder. Wireless operation is flawless; both the network printing and scanning work very well with our computers running Windows 7 and 8. For some reason, during wireless setup, the printer did not want to connect when I used the method of manually entering our WPA passcode. Since our router supports the WPS pin method, I tried that instead, and it then connected just fine. I wish it was possible to automatically create properly collated scans from two-side originals using the automatic document feeder, but there does not appear to be a way - in fairness I am not sure if that feature is available elsewhere or not. Another minor issue with two-sided originals is the scanned page picks up a little print through from the back side of the original; not enough to be a show stopper, but enough to notice. I do not think the print quality is quite as crisp as the results from our other inexpensive laser printer, an HP P1102W. But it is very acceptable. I still think HP is the best of breed in printers, however I think the Canon ImageClass MF4880DW is a fine choice and a great value for a home office or small business. The laser technology definitely beats constantly buying the inkjet cartridges that most multi-function devices use, or having those expensive cartridges dry out if you are an infrequent printer user. So, let me explain since the beginning about this printer. I bought this printer for my small business in which I scan 50+ pages per week and print 100+ pages per week. I really like how quickly it prints and of course the immense amount of pages you can get with the toner cartridge. Also, they give you a full size and filled up toner with the printer, which is nice because sometimes other printers will only give you a "mini cartridge" for startup. Everytime you have an issue with it, such as a paper jam, it will walk you through step by step on the small LCD screen on how to fix it, another great perk. It's affordable, that's always nice. One thing that's kind of annoying is it defaults to double sided printing, so I have to change that every time, although there's probably a way to change the default on it, I just haven't figured it out yet. I want to explain why at first why I gave this printer 2 stars, and why it's now 5 stars. What would happen was I would open up MF Toolbox(Canon's scan software), then I would click PDF. Scanning on this printer through the ADF, the 300 dpi maximum scan quality was absolutely horrible. There was a bunch of breaks in the lines of my pen and a lot of my paperwork was hardly legible. My boss looked at my scans and was very concerned. I was getting frustrated as there seems to be no information you can research on Google to try and rectify this issue. I wanted to share what I did to fix this issue, since I've read a lot of reviews on here and it looks like folks actually went as far as to buy Adobe Acrobat Pro to make up for the poor scan quality in MF Toolbox. I started playing around with Canon's MF Toolbox software and figured out how to get high quality scans even at 300 DPI. When you start the MF Toolbox software, click B&W scan(or color if you're doing color) instead of PDF. Then check that box that says "Display the Scanner Driver". Make sure Save as Type is PDF. Then load the paper, click the scan button on the printer, choose computer, B&W scan, confirm destination, then go back to MF Toolbox and click start. This should scan your document through ADF and your scan quality should be very good. A PDF of about 11 pages however is 5 MB, which is large but for my business that's okay because mainly we're just emailing to a spot checker and then faxing after that. I hope this review could save some folks some money or some unnecessary returns for this printer, it really is a good printer with a good scanner if you use the method I used above in MF Toolbox to scan. 5 stars! ... show more

Canon Laser imageCLASS - Great Price for a Fantastic Machine!

Purchased for my home office. I received my imageClass MF4880dw Wireless Laser printer today. A very fast delivery for regular shipping via UPS. Took it out of the box, and began the installation. All went well, and I thought I had everything correctly hooked up, when...it would not print the test page from the computer. So I called Canon. This is not a plug and play, which most printers are today, and we tend to be a bit spoiled by the easy installation. My Windows 7 was defaulting to LPT1 port for hookup, and I was using a USB cable. A quick change to the USB port1 and the test page went through in a few seconds. Canon Customer Service was quick to come on line for assistance, and very friendly. So far I have been amazed with the speed it prints. The quality of the printing is fantastic. Clear and sharp printing. I have several selections to choose from when printing. Single sided and two different double-sided options, which is very nice. The speed with which this machine prints from a power saver mode is a plus. The paper stop lever that slides out for catching the printed pages is quite nice, and can be closed when not in use. Even though the paper tray is extended in the front of the machine, the amount of paper it holds is a plus, especially if you have a large printing job to do. I don't find it too loud or noisy at all when operating. I also like the tilt out selection panel. The price was very reasonable for a multitask machine. After having two Canon ink jet multitask printers, which I was very happy using for many years, I expect this Canon laser printer to be of the same quality. It's a great buy! ... show more

Canon delivers

I was being eaten alive feeding cartridges to standard ink jet printers and knew a laser would get a lot better print mileage. My last two ink jet printers have been Canons, the second is my current 'color' printer. The first Canon ink jet lasted about four year and I do an average amount of printing. One day it just stopped feeding paper and I could not determine why, so I bought my second Canon ink jet. Now in all fairness, I typically buy the cheapest model I can find that will do the basic job. I paid less than $40 for my current Canon ink jet which I now use only for color printing. The rest of the jobs are now sent, over my WLAN, to the new Canon 4880. I love this machine! It is pretty fast, very quiet and has options galore, if you need them. It does a great job right out of the box. One problem I ran into was that the DHCP could not find my wired network. Once I manually assigned an IP address in the printer (easy to do with its display) the machine was found. Then I loaded the drivers and utilities on each computer (also quick and easy) and the printer was ready to go. I hope this Canon holds up a bit better than my first ink jet from them a few years ago, time will tell. Still for $149 with free shipping from Amazon, this is a good deal and a sweet printer. Everything I've done with it so far has worked flawlessly and print quality appears excellent. One note, I do not use or have the fax function hook-up as fax machines will not work with our IP phone service. But, it is easy to scan a document, save it as a pdf and attach it to an email. Hours of Frustration and Lost Productivity - Stay Away for Your Own Sanity

My experience with this machine has been extremely poor. I would consider myself an advanced user in regards to driver installations, updates, and networked printing. The drivers and software included with the machine are the worst offenders, making it nearly impossible to intuitively interface with a PC for anything other than a simple print job. The print function is the only one that works consistently. While the print quality is fine, it is not anything to write home about. I have an inkjet printer that I kept for the rare color print jobs that does the job with very similar image quality and sharpness. This more expensive laser unit did not perform better, so I can't really include that as a "pro." We bought the machine more for the faxing and scanning properties and our printing volume is comparatively low, so I can't speak to the lifespan of the toner cartridges. The software experience and user interface on the machine itself are a complete mess. My computer recognized the machine as three separate devices, each with strange and unhelpful suffixes to the generic Canon Laser identifier. I had to manually spool printing jobs to the printer, selecting a different device each time until I had guessed the correct one. The scanner software and print option menus are full of spelling errors and are missing important features like DPI selection. The software is also slow to start up and becomes unresponsive at times when trying to communicate with the printer, both when connected via printer USB cable and wirelessly on the network. The scanning function does not work. I have tried initiating scans on both the machine and on the PC using the software, and they do not communicate at all, aside from failure and error messages. Documents do feed through the scanner but the job fails immediately after the scan completes. The main reason we purchased this unit was for the fax capabilities. We use Ooma Premier for our phone line, which has worked flawlessly with both phones and another fax machine we used to test out the functionality to ensure it would work properly. We were disappointed once again. While the initial tests I ran faxing to my office worked fine, we experienced major issues once our fax volume picked up significantly about 30 days after purchasing the unit, hence our inability to return it. The unit scans in documents properly, dials out and achieves a phone connection with the receiving party, but transmissions fail roughly 60% of the time. The success rate does not improve when lowering the quality of the transmissions or attempting to send fewer pages at a time. This machine is basically worthless to me in its current state. I have never had a poorer experience with any printer, scanner or fax machine. I would not recommend this to anyone, especially those who require a reliable fax and scanning solution for their business. Drama-Free! printer/scanner/copier for home office

The HP that this replaced very nearly led to an "Office Space" style encounter with a baseball bat, so I am really grateful for the consistent and reliable performance. Print is crisp and fast, toner replacement is easy enough for those of us who are mechanically challenged. I really like using the duplex printing, I love the sheet feeder and I love the copy and scan speed. I've never had a paper jam in the sheet feeder or the printer (TAKE THAT, HP!). The only negative I've noticed is the output tray. The stop is not high enough to hold more than about 12 sheets. Very easy to set up on our in-house wireless network, no problems, no resetting everything in the place, no messing with it, it just worked. This is what we were promised with plug-and-play. The first time scanning took a few minutes to figure out, I ended up hard-wiring the destination computer. Pretty sure that was me, not the feature set, but I'm always in a hurry. That took me less than 5 minutes the first time and a few seconds after that. In an office with portable PC and Apple products, that's no big deal. Someday I'll go back and figure it out. As I said, it replaced a troublesome HP, I've also used Lexmark and Epson multi-functions before. I'm a Canon convert. UPDATE Over a year of trouble free ownership. Cranking it up to 5 STARS. Just went through a scanning and fax session for a deadline, and never even had to pull out the reference manual. The menu has logical and intuitive steps. This is a very small home office and the equipment is not often used for more than printing or occasional copying. No 'relearning' time required at all. This is a really great product. ... show more
