  • Software update rendered it worthless now. No Brother software support!
Mac users, beware: I recently updated to Mac Catalina 10.15.1. I wish I had NOT done that. Brother will no longer support the scan feature on this printer I bought in 2011. It no longer will scan as the Apple software has changed from a 32bit to 64bit operating system. Just had a very frustrating Brother tech support phone call today. They've rendered my scanner/printer feature obsolete and I will NOT be purchasing another Brother printer ever again. Their tech support work around for me to use the cumbersome Apple Image Capture procedure is not acceptable. Selling this working but junk printer on Craigslist shortly for $20... ... show more

  • Great printer! Has lasted over 6 years and going strong!
**update** January 25, 2015 This thing is STILL going strong. In tech years this printer is ancient, but it continues to chug along and I haven't changed the cartridge in 2 years. For the record this printer gets used often. My wife is a student and prints papers on it. I use it quite a bit as well for household and professional reasons. Bumping rating up from four stars to five. I purchased my printer in September of 2008, and it is still going strong. I have only hit a few glitches, but nothing horrible. For example, when I use the automatic document feeder sometimes the documents towards the back of the pile become crooked for the scanning process. This is only a few degrees and scans are legible and it works. I love that it can take a pile of papers and make a single PDF out of them. I have only used this unit for faxing over a landline about a dozen times (landlines are sooo 2010), but there were never any errors. I will admit that the wireless process is not super easy, but it is still not hard. I have used this unit with about 4 to 5 different wireless routers, and it has always connected. Here is what is really awesome, the printing life. I was a student when I bought this. I was printing out 20-30 page documents all day long. Since 2008, I am only on my second toner cartridge (including the original)which I purchased in May of 2009. I paid about 40-50 bucks for it. Not bad for almost 4 years worth of printing. Meanwhile my inkject photo printers (been through 2 of those)have guzzled up the black ink. I know, its apples to oranges, but still. The one cartridge I did buy was this one: Brother TN360 High Yield Black Toner Cartridge . Now I will say, that I did use the "toner tape trick" where you tape the holes on the cartridge to keep the printer from thinking the ink is gone. When I bought my first cartridge, it was because of the replace toner indicator. Then I found out about the tape trick, and I ended up not using the replacement cartridge for close to a year. I will say I am surprised at the current price (April 8, 2012) of $399.00, I paid $279.00 for it right here on Amazon. I don't know that I would be so happy if paid an extra 120 bucks for it, but I didn't so I am! I will deduct a star for slightly less than easy wireless setup and crooked document feeding. ... show more

  • WIRELESS IS DIFFICULT AND UNRELIABLE
WIFI connection is tedious and time consuming to set up - and often the printer has to be recycled several times just to find a router that is in the same room. Once the connection is set, connection has to be manually recreated every few hours - a 5 to 10 minute process. It loses the connection easily and it does NOT automatically recreate the connection like other wifi devices do. I have to reset the machine to "default settings" and start from scratch. None of my other wifi devices have this problem. They all find the router easily and if they lose it, they find it automatically, let alone having to begin from scratch. I have spent time with their technical support on the telephone, numerous times, who confirmed that this is NORMAL behavior. Also, my router is very reliable when it comes to other devices. Even guests visiting with devices have no trouble using the wifi. The Brother machine seems to use its own proprietary approach to wireless and therein lies a problem. That is, you have to load special software onto every machine that will print wireless. So don't expect guests with computers using your wifi to easily print from their computers via wifi unless you invest the time to load the software. The user interface for other functions is very kludgey and unreliable. I often have trouble getting this thing just to make a copy. Seriously. Overall I feel that I wasted $300 and a lot of time. You know, I research so carefully before I buy; I read reviews, make comparisons, and review product literature. Buying this piece - particularly for the purpose of printing wireless - was a VERY bad move. PS: If you check my history of Amazon reviews, I think you will find it is rare that I am as unhappy with a product let alone furious as I am with this one and this company. I will not buy from this company again and I will strongly recommend that friends and family avoid products by the Brother Company. ... show more
