  • Disposable laser printers are here, AT LAST!
Home business requires a lot of B&W laser printing that uses up toner. Many times the cheap toner cartridges sold on ebay ruined my drum unit. Replace the drum? Laser drums purchased on the "after market" have been horrible - print quality unacceptable. But to buy a new OEM one from Brother in years past was over $100. Wait a minute! This printer comes with a new drum and toner cartridge for less than the cost of a drum alone. I now have a collection of working Brother HL2140, HL2240, etc. machines that had their drums wear out...I simply purchased a new printer. In fact I have 5 that all work if you want to buy new drums for them. But it is cheaper to buy an entirely new printer with drum & toner. To hell with the environment, recycling and all that. The OEM drum price is now down to about $10 more than this printer. The "compatible", non-OEM, drums are so hit and miss I'll NEVER buy one again. Even if the OEM drum prices gets down to $10 less than this printer the OEM toner included still makes it cost effective to --believe it or not-- buy a new printer instead of buying a drum + toner. What a strange world this has become where you try to recycle only to receive a rebuilt drum that ruins your printing, or a refilled toner cartridge that ruins your drum...so that you end up shelving a working laser printer because Amazon will ship a new one for so little cost. By the way this printer is fabulous work horse that delivers thousands of text pages, FedEx laser labels, customer literature, etc. I must love this printer because I keep snapping them up for $70 free shipping. ... show more

  • A pretty decent laser printer for the price
A pretty decent laser printer for the price, you really can't go wrong at under a hundred bucks. We have 2 of these, and they've been running good for the past 2 years or so. Don't be fooled by the starter toner, it isn't a full toner and will fade rather quickly. We made the mistake of not changing it out until it totally ran out. This led to the printer flashing warning lights and despite having replaced the toner cartridge with a brand new one, it simply would not reset to normal and print. After much googling, it had to be hard reset, which was a painstaking process. I can't even remember how we did it, but it involved several tedious steps. But eventually we got it working again and everything's been fine since. Now we make sure to change out the toner at the first sign of any ink fade. Toners can be bought dirt cheap on the big auction site, however not all of them work good. We found one seller on the big auction site whose toners work flawlessly and yield high page numbers, we buy them at roughly 2 for $30 shipped. On a second look, I just noticed there are several sellers selling them here on Amazon dirt cheap as well. No need to get ripped off on the OEM Brother toners at $70 a pop, just buy the generic ones that has good reviews and you'll do just fine. ... show more

  • Great printer, great price, great product!
So far, so good. I don't think the starter cartridge lasted very long, but because we were so happy to be able to print again, I could be wrong. However, I know I didn't get through a full pack of paper (500 sheets) with it. That being said, I am happy. I know people complain about noise, but really once it is turned on and goes through it's initial noise ( a few seconds), I don't even notice it. Usually I just turn it off if I am not going to use it, but if it is on, there might be a low hum but nothing that really annoys me or anything I can't tune out. As for printing, I am overjoyed! We had so many problems with other printers, the ones with wet ink. They ALWAYS dried out, even if we were using it on a daily basis. Yes, this is only black and white, but I hardly ever want or need color. And we are on a regular cartridge (OEM) now and haven't had low ink or problems with it and I know we have printed a lot! We have now had this for over a year and it works great! I would recommend it if you need a black and white printer that isn't too expensive. ... show more

  • Great Home Office Printer
I decided to buy this product because I was so impressed with the earlier version made by Brother (HL-2140). BTW the HL-2140 is the older version and is not being produced in the same quantity, which is why it is more $ (scarcity drives up price). No reason to buy it (HL-2140) as it's older and more $ for less features. I decided to get this printer when my drum went on the HL-2140 and this printer was only about $15 (+shipping and tax) more than a new drum for the old printer and it gave me a starter printer toner and a new drum and a new machine (I'd say that was worth the extra $). The shipping was a bit more than I thought it should be, but I compared the total price to the store down the street and it was still cheaper. It was easy to uninstall the old printer and install this one. No hiccups at all. Set it up in less than 5 min and had it shared on a local network too. Highly recommend it. The replacement toners are also only a few bucks more than the HL-2140, but as it's a newer version, I kind of expected that. The starter toner it came with does not last long. I went ahead and bought the high-capacity toner in addition to the printer because I knew this. The shipping was quick and efficient and no damaged parts during shipping. I have been very happy with this printer and would recommend it. ... show more

  • Really nice Laser Printer
So far so good. I have 3 Brother Laser printers about the same model. The only thing I don't understand all three Brother Printers crinkle one end of a # 10 Envelope when printing and there is no way to get around it? It does't crink the end so bad you can't use the envelope but it is a shame it does this. The only other problem I have with this printer is it has a sensitive power plug that if the cord is bumped it can cause lost power to printer and I have to giggle it to keep power on. The same thing with my last same type brother printer? It is okay as long as you don't bump the cord or move the printer to cause this. Otherwise the power stays on once I get it set right. If it wasn't for the envelope problem and the envelope problem this little printer would deserve a 5 star rating. ... show more
