Took this out to the woodpile and decided to give it a try. Ended up splitting 5-6 logs. It was quick, easy and worked great. And I was not dressed for log splitting, it was that easy. I bought this in anticipation of our first winter in the mountand wanting to put aside some kindling to get the fires started. We had been getting our firewood ready and using an axe for the kindling. VERY UNSAFE. I had seen these advertised before so I decided to order it. I've looked at the $120 versions like this at a local "tool" store and this seems to be every bit as solid. I used it to split kindling from scraps I pick up a local flooring manufacturing plant and it's great. So much safer than using the hatchet to split the wood and faster too!

You would have to swing an elephant at this thing to get it to split wood. It is dull beyond reason and would require quite a lot of work to get it to be useful

This splitter is a sturdy piece of metal and accommodates a good sized piece of wood. It comes with heavy duty bolts for mounting and a nice storage cover. Using it directly works if the base is held down with your foot. However, having it mounted to a stump or wide, heavy log is definitely recommended. We split the wood using a light heavy duty mallet. Next time we will try a heavier mallet to get the job done quicker. It will be very useful when we need more kindling for our campfires. Been splitting pine and oak by hand for decades. Burn between three and four cords a season. I had a very positive first impression of this product. The top ring is of a frustratingly cheap material and after only two days of use it is damaged and will eventually fail. Returning.
