  • I Actually Bought This...
Style: Standard Size: 208 cubic cm
Okay, unlike many of the gushy product reviews that say "this was part of a promotion," I actually purchased this snow blower. Not sure why Amazon throws so many promotional reviews to the top (check out LG ovens and you'll see what I mean), but hey, wouldn't you write a great review if you got a free refrigerator or a free oven...or maybe a free snow blower? So before I begin I would recommend jumping to "most recent" reviews first, then "verified purchase" second and you'll discover that what you're reading is actually coming from someone who paid for the product through Amazon, and your reading list will have shrunk considerably. So let's jump to this Briggs & Stratton 208 cc snow blower, made in China I should add in case you were wondering. First off, don't be fooled by the large 9.5 lettering on this 950 model because 208 cc is just a bit over 6 horsepower. Yes, the videos and ads seem to portray this thing as a beast and indeed, it does weigh a ton. And if all you get where you live is a bit of light powder that never dumps more than 4 inches or so, this model does the job well and throws the stuff with ease. But that is about where it ends. Any heavier (say a rain/snow mix) or slush and you'll discover that the small horsepower of this model simply can't do the job. I live on the foothills of the Cottonwood canyons in Utah which have the resorts of Alta/Snowbird and Solitude/Brighton, each of which is known for it light powdery snow. But when the snowfall tops about 5 inches, this blower is a bear to handle. The chute clogs quite regularly if there is any melt, likely due to it's limited "throw" power, and often I am limited to just doing 1/3 of the blower's width at a time...any more (a full mouthful) and the engine strains. So this means a lot of slow going, that is, moving only about a foot forward and waiting for the blower to clear, then moving another foot forward. Slow going at best (jealously eyeing my neighbors who are plowing their walkways with ease). On the plus side, starting this blower up, even without the electric start, is a breeze and setting the thing up out of the box took less than an hour. But then, the first model sent to me did break on the second storm (Amazon picked up the broken model and replaced it). This Briggs & Stratton does have a fuel shutoff which is nice for parking it once the winter season ends since there is no fuel drain plug. So far we've had relatively light winters so since first getting this blower 2 years ago I've only had to use it about a dozen times. The gear drive is terrific and goes up my steep driveway with ease, and the 2-reverse speeds are nice features. Getting extra shear pins (I break about 1 each year) is a bit of a headache so order early since the pins are VERY specific to this model. Also be ready to continually adjust the auger tension cable as it will loosen quite regularly with the heavy vibration of the machine. So a quick review of the pros and cons of this 6+ HP model: PROS: easy to start; wheel drive is great at all speeds; heavy traction tires; fairly easy to assemble and adjust; comes with an attached clearing scoop (you'll use it often so it's nice to have it right there on the machine); great on very light powder snow. CONS: Weak on tossing the snow and virtually unable to move wet or slushy snow; heavy to move if you run out of gas (you'll only do that once); actual horsepower is 6.4 (the BIG 9.5 number you see on the machine is the torque, not the HP); handles are high so since this machine takes you 3x the effort to clear an area your shoulders might ache; the auger tension cable will loosen even after being put into the max position so you'll find yourself constantly pulling the cable to fully disengage the snow in the shoot. All in all, if this is for your home that only gets snow about 3 or 4 times season and money is an issue, then you'll feel pretty proud that your $800 bought you such a hefty blower. On the other hand, if you're living in snow country and are only now learning to convert those cc numbers into horsepower or are limited to that ceiling of only spending $800, then you might be better off with a single stage paddle blower for the price (does as good or better a job); otherwise, spend a few more dollars and get yourself a higher horsepower model (357 cc converts to about 13 HP) or a 3-stage blower...do your research, and read only those reviews from people who actually bought the thing (it'll be flagged on the right of the Amazon reviews with a "verified purchase"). Or hope that you're selected to be part of a promotional giveaway... ... show more

  • It does the work
Style: Standard Size: 208 cubic cm
Overall this machine did the job. My driveway is a 1/4 miles long with ups and downs, 4 hours of work and it was all clear (5" of snow). The Snow_blower has the required power (moving and clearing) and do fair job handling foliage and small branches hidden under the snow. The electric start is fun but even the pull is working excellent, one pull and it starts even completely cold (just set the choke correctly). I was less impressed with slushy snow handling (the chute clogged) and turning the blower to go back is a pain. Good point: it seems that the engine was tested before shipping. Issues : a) The electric plug has no cover, that irresponsible (there is no voltage there but what about dirt accumulation and little creatures settling there?) b) The operator manual must include fuel tank capacity (on B&S web site I found it's 0.8G), also it should include typical operating time with full tank ( due the the long driveway I may need to place gasoline container along the driveway before the snow). c) Instructions to place the upper section of the chute: Must make clear in step 1 : "Don't tight the bolts yet" , the arrow in the drawing doesn't mean anything. I expect B&S to fix this. To Amazon: The shipping reminded me the 17th century. The actual carrier forgot my blower for 10 days at his warehouse, my inquiry call waked them up, then the best tracking info I got was "They will call you". The driver called 15 minutes before getting to my house, driving slightly above the speed limit I was able to arrive shortly after him to my house. During the 20 days of delivery, Amazon shipping status showed that the package is near my house. Amazon need to drastically improve its information on delivery status of Market Place sellers. ... show more

  • Great Machine!
Style: Standard Size: 208 cubic cm
I finally broke down and bought a snowblower this winter, and I couldn't be happier about the Briggs and Stratton. It cuts through heavy snow like butter, even the tough piles at the end of the driveway. Setup was a little confusing (I understand they want to have just pictures and no words so they don't have to do it in multiple languages, but they were very vague) and required two people, but once it got set up and gas and oil in it, it works great! Size is manageable too, and multiple speeds make it easy to handle once you get used to it. Don't go above 3 though, otherwise you will be running behind it! ... show more

  • great machine but
Style: Standard Size: 208 cubic cm
I love everything about this machine, Except you need to turn the shoot handle seven times for a 180° turn. Other brands are only two times

  • Works, but needs better labeling on controls
Style: Standard Size: 208 cubic cm
Starts easy, handles everything so far. Only complaint is the controls are not clearly marked for what position they need to be in. - As an example, the choke has a symbol for throttle on the knob, and an arrow, but nothing to indicate what that arrow indicates. The on/off switch and fuel valve have nothing to indicate which position is on and which is off, or even what they are. The manual is no help. It took trial and error to figure how to get it to start. I intend to paint something( like a white dot) so I know what position each control needs to be in to run it. Knocked off one star for the poor control labeling - or lack thereof. ... show more

  • Good Product
Style: Standard Size: 208 cubic cm
Very nice! Product did arrive late, but was in food shape when it did arrive. Assembly was a bit difficult due to very poor instructions, but maybe easier for non first timers. Started on first try. I have used it three times on a fairly large parking area and was impressed. Would recommend!
