  • ALMOST the classic Braun battery clock from West Germany
The media could not be loaded. I still have one of the original style made in Germany. I've had it for about 20 years now. Before that, I had one of THE originals made in WEST Germany; it sadly broke when it was accidentally dropped after MORE than 20 years service. Man, they don't make 'em like they used to. I just don't know WHY Braun (I'm not even sure it's the original company(?)) stopped making the original, but they did. Why did I need another? Because years ago my wife "stole" mine and uses it on her bedside table. And the cheapie(s), there've been several, just are garbage. I even bought another, larger, Braun, but it's (a) substantially larger and (b) the light has always been awful on that one. Periodically I've looked for another closer to my original. There's a Braun that looks like it, but THAT ONE DOESN'T HAVE A LIGHT. Grrr... So then I found this. Can't tell where it's made (probably China, but couldn't find it on the clock, in the instructions or anywhere on the box). Differences/comments: 1. It's a bit bigger than the original Braun. 2. The snooze button is on the bottom of this one. You push the whole clock down against the table top and that snoozes it and also (at any time of the night) lights up the face for 5 seconds. WONDERFUL! This light actually lights the whole clock face so you can actually see it (yet it certainly doesn't blind you in the middle of the night). 3. The original ticks. This DOES NOT (so if you're a light sleeper, this has a sweep, smooth seconds hand. I attached a short video - the ticking is the old one, and you can see how the seconds hand on the old one "clicks" one second to the next, the new smoothly moves along. This has pros and cons. If you hate noise, the new one is great. But the old one had a clever function. When the battery runs down it does a "double tick" instead of a single, each second tick. 4. Setting the clock - I do like the old one's knob for setting the alarm. You can pinch it between thumb and forefinger. The new one you have to put your fingertip against it and twist. Not a deal-killer to me, but not quite as convenient, IMHO. I saw another review indicating that the button broke off. Hope that was a one-off problem! Also as pictures show the time setting is on the outside of the new one. On the old one you have to remove the back to set the time. But the knob for that is also one you grab with finger & thumb, so it's easier to turn. I like that you don't have to remove the back on the new one. Every time you do, to me it's a chance you can break the plastic body of the old one. Not like you do it every day, but still. If you don't have to move one piece to get to another, it's simpler and safer. 5. Alarm - exactly like the original, a crescendo to more gently wake you. But it'll definitely WAKE you! So bottom line, I'm very happy that Braun has (nearly) returned to their "roots." The original was hard to beat. I'm sure they think that this is an improvement. In many ways, it is. But the old one, really, wasn't "broke," so I'm not sure it really needed any "fixing!" But this ain't bad! Pros: *ALMOST the original, but IMHO nothing "bad" at all and I'm glad I bought it! *No ticking for those who like QUIET *Night light is great - FINALLY they brought it back and it WORKS. As an aside, this one you push the light button and it comes on for 5 seconds. The original light stayed on as long as you held the switch *Great crescendo alarm. Unless you're dead, you won't sleep through it. *Don't have to remove the back to set the time Cons: *Nothing really, just nitpicks *Not quite as easy to set the alarm/time with the new buttons *A little bigger than the original, but by no means does it take up your bedside table *I don't think that it has the weak battery signal any more (nothing about it in the instructions) ... show more

  • Classic design with some flaws
What's not to like about a classic-design analog bedside clock? This Braun is simple to setup and use. It takes a single standard AA battery, which are easily found everywhere. (Thank goodness they resisted the temptation to make it rechargeable or worse, to use a couple of coin batteries that are not always easily found.) It is also easy to engage the alarm function. There is a small slider switch on the top of the case. Slide it up to activate the alarm function - there is a small green painted portion facing you to let you know it's "on". When the alarm rings, to shut it off completely, just slide that switch back down. Easy. But there are some minor design flaws that keep this from being a 5-star review. The dial light is basically worthless. When you push the snooze function (pushing the clock case down on its base, where the snooze switch is), a small and relatively dim light illuminates at the 4 o'clock position. But it doesn't really illuminate the whole dial. If the light doesn't show at least a majority of the dial, you might as well have left it out of the design. The second minor flaw are the dials in the back to set the clock time and alarm time. Normally, they would pop out and you could grab them and turn them easily. These do not. You have to twist them in place with your fingertip. An awkward design. Lastly, I still don't understand why new Braun clocks have moved the snooze switch to the bottom. Instead of hitting a button on the top - you know, like every clock has had - Braun builds the switch into the clock's base. So you push down on the whole case to activate the snooze function (as well as the light). Not a natural or ergonomic design. ... show more

  • Great clock, but needs a better alarm
I would have preferred that the alarm was a bit louder

  • Nice item from Braun. I like the sweeping movement.
Sweeping movement is very nice and the light can be turn on very smooth. The material is great.

  • wakes me up
i need something loud, this is loud enough. It could be brighter when you look at night, but i'm willing to live with that.

  • not for the vision-impaired
Nice clock, but the alarm hand is very hard to see. Also, I wish they would have hidden the time set knob on the back. It's right out there with the alarm set knob and it's easy to grab the wrong one. I do like the gently increasing alarm sound though.

  • Look At Me
I use this as a clock watcher at night, when I should be sleeping. It is easy to read, nice to look at- just as an ornament. I wish it were a little heavier in terms of weight.
