  • Excellent tool for the dandy lumberjack
Style: 20V Chainsaw Kit
The saw is slightly rugged, easy to use, and it works very well on cutting thick dry wood. I love that it isnt noisy like its petrol powered cousins! I used corn oil in the lubricant tank and it works great, is cheap, readily available at the grocery store, and environmentally friendly. You need to know that this thing leaks like crazy so set it down on a piece of cardboard because it will leak oil! BTW, it's supposed to leak oil since the oil goes to the chain not the motor. The safety devices are good and read & follow the safety instructions, this thing will kick back on you and the chain will change your face if you let it. The battery works with other 20v tools from B&D but it is likely the first thing to break since the batteries ARE NOT RUGGED, so be careful to not crack the battery casing using this saw. It is an excellent tool for the residential once-in-a-while use by a dandy dad trying to clean up the yard. It has very good battery life but slows noticeably before powers out so be sure to have a charged battery to replace the one in the saw if you have a medium sized job to be done. No need to wear a flannel shirt while using this one but it does make it more fun. ... show more

  • Whacking the "Bush" in Alaska!
Style: 20V Chainsaw Kit
Black & Decker is a name in tools that I know and trust for making quality products. I was happy to see that they make this battery powered chainsaw. We have a gas chainsaw but like many others have noted, starting it takes more energy than using it. I really needed something easier and faster to use. We're mainly cutting Aspen and some pine for firewood. As soon as this came in the mail, I pulled out the battery and the charger and got it to cooking. It took about 5 hours as the booklet said to reach a full charge. During that time, I read through the instruction booklet and put the saw together. That didn't take more than a few minutes and requires absolutely no tools. I was impressed with the sturdiness of the saw. The saw is made of metal and plastic and is very light and well-balanced. I'm not a big, strong lumberjack, I'm a great-grandmother, so I'm not all that keen on chainsaws but doing a job without the right tool is just wrong. This is the right tool for me. I was able to cut a nice pile of logs up in the 20 minutes of operating time for the battery charge. I have a picture of my pile below. I like the weight and how easy it is to use the saw. I don't like the manual lube of the chain. It's annoying to have to push the little plunger after every cut or so to keep the chain lubed. I like that I feel safe while using the saw. It seems easy to keep it in control as it's not running anywhere near as fast as our gas chainsaw. I also like how easy it is to adjust the tension on the chain if I see it getting a little loose. I don't have to stop what I'm doing and pay attention to taking care of that. Bottom Line: The price was right and I'm happy with my purchase. If I could do it over knowing what I know now, I would probably opt for the 40V version with the automatic chain lube and a little more power but this will work for me for now. Day Two: I wanted to add a few thoughts after spending a second day with this little chainsaw "wannabe". Today we tacked a 50+ foot Aspen with approximately a 7 inch diameter. We won't be trying that again. The B&D cuts too slow for a job like this and in the end, the tree fell all wrong even with the right cuts. We again only had 20 minutes of cutting power and that was enough to down the tree and cut it into small enough sections to get on the sled to haul out of the woods. I used my gas powered chainsaw to finish the job of cutting it into firewood. This is a great little tool for having around the yard for cutting up limbs and fallen trees. It's sturdy, easy to use and well-designed (except for the manual lube on the chain). It's a step up from a hedge cutter and a step down from a gas chainsaw power-wise. Consider your needs and how you will be using this before you buy it. ... show more

  • Versatility for the price.
Style: 20V Chainsaw Kit
I've been using the saw regularly for over six months. Mostly to cut trees, both small and large as I clear land in the rain forest. The saw is reliable, seems relatively sturdy given the price, and is light, powerful for its size, and relatively quiet. I'd buy another one. Revision: 12/2015 Spare parts other than the bar and chain are not easy to get. I blew the rubber oil button. It took me quite some time to find one, and when I did it cost me 5 times more in freight and handling.than the part itself. I have a multi-tool that uses the same batteries so extra batteries are an investment, not a cost. I've been caught in some deluges and the saw seems to take it in stride. I try to keep it under cover, but it's nice to know it can handle unavoidable wet weather. That said, the battery life for larger jobs is short. I have four batteries, 2 regular and 2 extended. I go through those regularly, depending on the size and wetness of the logs I'm cutting. I've cut up to a 15+ inch diameter hardwood log. The hand oiler is the weakest aspect of the saw. It leaks from the hole in the reservoir cap, and it just leaks from the lube point as well. It can get messy, and I pretty much keep a limited amount of oil in the reservoir, though I pump it a lot for lubrication. You need to clean the saw and chain after every use. The bar slot gets clogged easily. Take it apart, clean away all the chips from the mechanisms. I clean the chain and bar and lube them down to make sure all moves smoothly. I sharpen the chain every other day of use or so. Battery power is inversely proportional to the friction of the dirt in the machine's moving parts. A sharp saw, well oiled runs much longer on a single battery. While running this saw the chain comes loose regularly on big jobs. Too loose and the chain derails and tears up the housing. I've found that taking the extra time to tighten the chain keeps things moving along. The quick tension mechanism could use some engineering improvement. The tighten and tension knobs are unpredictable in their coordination and it takes a bit of a hand jive to get it right. The chain has become a bit loose on the bar and sprocket. If I had the know-how I'd take out a link. Would likely make keeping the saw tighter easier. Buy a file and sharpener tool when you get this saw if you plan to use it regularly. An extra chain if you are working in dirty areas. The housing stores a lot of chips and debris as you cut, and can add a lot of friction and battery wear. Clean it out regularly. When sawing this battery-driven saw tends to bind more than a higher power gas saw. I have a set of wedges I purchased and they make all cuts much easier and generally stop the binding problems. On big cuts the battery can just stop on you without giving any warning, so a wedge is a good back up and saves torquing the chain and bar in a narrowed or wet cut. Also watch the trigger, as gloves can catch in the upper trigger lock section and releasing the lower trigger does not stop the saw. That can be a nasty surprise. The light weight of the saw causes the chain to bounce more on beginning cuts or small diameter trees. ( I use a gomboy hand pruning pull saw on anything up to about 3-4 inches and find it more efficient.) [And more recently a 20 buck folding razor-saw by Corona. Also, use their anvil loppers which are very efficient if you don't cut at a 90 degree and keep you cuts limited to what the blade can handle. I use safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, and take all the precautions I do with a gas saw. This saw will kick back if you put it in the wrong position. undercuts, or tip cuts are dangerous, even though this is a low power saw. Chain saws are efficient, but they are not my favorite tool in the bush. I've had some uncomfortable incidents with this saw. A reminder that it will cut you up or kill you if you let it. When this one finally goes-likely from a torn up housing. I'll replace it with another. I'm also buying some off brand high capacity batteries that have a high rating and are cheaper. But quite frankly after using a saw on and off for a couple of hours, its time to stop and go do something less dangerous-when the batteries are done, I know I'm done for the day as well. The saw, with a couple of extended life batteries is a great value. Much more versatile than a corded saw, and much cheaper and less temperamental than a low priced small gas model. 5/25/2019 I purchased another saw of the same make as the bar and chain were just as expensive to buy separately. I'm still using the old body. I use this saw regularly to cut hardwood invasives. Here are some tips I've picked up through experience and time lost. 1. Expect the oil cap to crack as it is the pump and you are working it regularly. I simply carry a pump bottle of chain oil and get better results. 2. Keep your eye on the blade tightener as it will work its way loose and you will end up with the chain derailing. I regularly look down, loosen the outer fastener and tighten the chain with the blade control. It only takes a few seconds, and as I do that I often reoil the chain, give it a bit of a whir and it is well lubed. I carry a couple of batteries at all times and switch them out as soon as the saw shows signs of slowing down a bit. I regularly sharpen the chain, generally before each use. I live out in the sticks and I don't have the time go to town to deal with these issues. Things just have to be adjusted to. I like this saw as it is very easy to maintain. And I am amazed how long it has lasted. But I work with the problems I encounter. I have noticed that many people just run the saw into the ground when the oil cap rubber goes and bitch about it. There is no cure for stupidity. It's easy to give things a bad review. ... show more
