I literally followed the book and filled the base with sand. My feedback is mostly for the manufacturer. The assembly is not too bad, but the real sore point was when I had to remove the thin protective plastic film that is almost glued to the heat reflecting plates. Not only was it extremely difficult to remove this thin plastic film from 8 different surfaces ( 4 plates and had to be done from each side of the plates ), the plastic film disintegrates easily into small plastic pieces and it's just not got for our planet. Kindly consider using plain white paper between plates to pack them and save us the first timers from the pain in peeling off this plastic that was so difficult to remove. It will also save our planet some. Also consider replacing the foam padding with corrugated paper padding. Just make the packing planet friendly PLEASE !!!! The cover fits perfectly well and the assembled patio heater looks so good. It worked as expected and we can now enjoy winters on our patio.

Great heater, works great here, perfect for our chilly winter Seattle weather (not sub-zero but 40s at worst). One annoyance in assembly was the aluminum heat shield at the top was wrapped in 'scratch proof' plastic film (not that unusual). But it's hard adhered to the product and tricky to remove.

The good news is the product arrived quickly, well packaged, just a small dent in the metal housing (does not affect performance). All the required parts were included for assembly EXCEPT the first step is to fill the base with sand which is not included. Fortunately we live in the desert - no shortage of sand nearby (otherwise plan ahead). Assembly took an hour, but the instructions were easy to follow. It fired right up on the first try and appears to regulate and distribute the heat nicely (used once so far). The only negatives were (1) there are 4 large round unscreened vent holes (~2" dia) around the base of the metal base cover - probably a safety feature in case there is a propane leak. Unfortunately, living in the desert, critters such as snakes, rodents, scorpions and other critters find these as an entry to an attractive place to hide. I had to find some screen material and cover the holes from the inside secured with adhesive as a varmint exclusion (see photo). This product would be improved by simply screening those large openings at the factory. and (2) when I moved the heater with a full tank of propane on the wheels the framework bent and the heater no longer stood straight vertically - it was leaning significantly to one side. I bent it back into position but will probably remove the propane tank before I attempt to relocate the heater. Never had that problem with other patio heaters. The cover fits nicely but if you are under 6'+ it is hard to get it over the top, and even harder to remove with the bolts protruding on the top. These are minor issues with what otherwise appears to be a quality product.

This is a very well made item and the price was great. Assembly takes some time but that's to be expected. What I really like is the quality and final finish. MUCH superior to the ones being sold at HD, Lowes, etc.
