The good: This kit contains everything you need to start your first colony (except the bees). The wood is high-quality, and it assembles easily (you have to assemble the frames). You will need some wood glue for this. It is also coated in beeswax, so it will have some protection against the elements. The tools appear to be of good quality, for the most part. The sorta un-good: There is virtually no explanation of what the tools are, or how to use them. I recommend doing your own research and buying "Beekeeping for Dummies." In addition, the feeder provided is an entrance feeder, which carries some issues. I purchased a hive top feeder, and you should, too. And, finally, this kit will only get you started. If you live in the northern part of the US, you will need to purchase another deep brood box, and if you intend on actually collecting honey for your own use, you will need at least 1 honey super, as well. You will also want a mouse gaurd for fall, and also possibly a fume board and bee-quick to be able to get the bees to scat so you can harvest your honey in late summer. All of this stuff will run you an additional $200 or so. But you can't protect your hive or harvest any honey without those items. ... show more

I ordered this kit because I was aware of a swarm that needed to be retrieved and I didn’t have any supplies yet. When my kit arrived it was missing some frames. Five minutes with customer service and they were shipping an entire new kit. They told me to keep the first kit since it was their mistake and return shipping would be cumbersome . I was very impressed with their concern for customer inconvenience and satisfaction. The supplies are of good quality, the jacket and gloves are great. The only thing in the entire package that I’m not a fan of is the pants. They are made for a male body or a woman who is not “curvy”. They say “one size” but I am a 5’9” and a size 14 and they most definitely are not going to fit me or anyone else in my household. I don’t consider that a big issue - I can double layer leggings under jeans and tuck them into thick socks and get the same protection, so it would definitely not deter me from buying this again. ... show more

We are new bee keepers and bought this start kit for all the supplies that come with it. We have several BeeCastle hives but this kit has the jacket, smoker, hive tools and honey tools that make it worth the money. I did try to price out the items separately to see if I could get a better deal on the components but was not able to beat the price. This is a starter kit so some of the items can be replaced with better quality as you progress but this will get you going without any issues. ... show more

Had hoped to save the bees ... turned out they were very aggressive and we couldn't find the queen till days later. Sad results .. but not due to the quality or items used in this kit. Really nice set and DH was very impressed

Has everything you need to start your hive except the bees. Good quality materials. Some assembly required but not hard to do. Perfect size for my small garden. Over all a very good product.

The bee hive was fine and a lot of tools are included. The directions for what the tools are used for are too vague. The safety suit was a joke. I got stung first time I used it. Invest in a protective suit! You need that armor.
