This MayBee 8 frame langstroth starter hive kit is a well constructed option for a first hive because the main components arrive pre assembled and you'll have more than enough accessories to get you started. If you're wondering why 8 frames versus 10, the main reason is weight - especially when it's full of bees and honey, they can get pretty heavy! So this is the slightly lighter but still very standard version used by many beekeepers. I'm going to use it for housing a new nuc of bees to get a colony established. The main box (a standard size 8-frame deep hive box) comes fully assembled. Dovetail joints and wood screws are tight and the universal Langstroth sizing means it will work with other equipment as the apiary grows, including additional 8-frame supers once you start stacking them on top. The entire exterior is coated in a thick layer of natural beeswax which is a nice alternative to paint and provides a solid weather barrier that should last several seasons before needing a new coat. The deep brood box is paired with an inner cover, a telescoping cover with a sturdy metal top, a bottom board, and entrance reducer. i.e., the whole set from top to bottom. While the hive body is ready to go, the frames themselves do require assembly. Small nails are included but I also recommend a little wood glue on the joints. It's not too hard, just takes some time and patience. The frames are standard wood frames and come with plastic foundation that has a base coat of wax (and smells really nice!) in a comb pattern to encourage the bees to build out their comb efficiently. The accessory package is surprisingly comprehensive for a starter set. It comes with a standard smoker and plenty of fuel pellets along with a wide variety of hive tools for prying apart the propolis that bees use to seal the lid. Specialized gear like the uncapping knife is shaped at the perfect angle to reach the majority of honey caps for extraction. The frame hangers are a major convenience for keeping frames off the ground during hive inspections and maintaining proper bee space. The kit includes a queen excluder which is vital once you start adding supers on top, for keeping the queen in the bottom box and ensuring that future honey supers stay clear of brood. It also includes protective gloves and a veil which are helpful for a beginner or when dealing with a more defensive colony. It provides almost every specialized tool needed to manage a hive through the first year. I really like MayBee boxes and always recommend them to people in my local beekeeping association. Anyone who's seen them in person in my yard is also very impressed by the construction, and I personally love that I didn't have to put it together myself! Not only is this kit one of the best made hives I've used, it is also one of the best values for the money that I've ever seen, if you include all the accessories and don't have them already!

First time bee keepers and the bees are thriving! Thinking of buying a second to add on top. We did purchase a quilt box for the winter to ensure moisture is wicked out and to retain heat. It would be cool if that was included with this kit. Highly recommend for first timers!

As the VP of my local bee club, I’ve seen a lot of hive kits ranging from “surprisingly solid” to “held together by optimism and staples.” This one genuinely impressed me. 🐝 The components were well organized, beginner-friendly, and sturdy enough that I felt confident setting up a healthy new colony without needing to immediately replace half the equipment. Assembly was straightforward, the frames fit properly, and everything arrived in good condition. I especially appreciate when a kit balances accessibility for newer beekeepers while still being functional enough that experienced keepers won’t outgrow it in five minutes. This setup did that well. Absolutely amazing! Higher quality than I could have hopes for, everything was in order and packaged extremely well. Assembling the frames was a simple, straightforward, and satisfying experience because they're so finely crafted. the whole Hive smells phenomenal, like fresh-cut Pine and beeswax. no chemical sent. nothing artificial or fake, and the wax coating on the baseboard, entrance block, brood box, top cover, and lid, is all phenomenally well done. high quality all the way around, nothing split or tour during assembly. plastic backers are sturdy and flexible, and also have a phenomenal wax coating. even the gloves fit well and feel protective without being bulky or too thick to feel what your fingers are doing. If everything that I bought online was more like this product, I would be a happier man, and the world would be a better place. Needless to say I'm impressively happy with this purchase, it was obviously crafted by Professionals in the beekeeping industry. everything has been considered carefully, and Tastefully. right down to the fact that the frame pieces themselves are not coated with wax to prevent the bees from gluing them together with propolis so quickly. Issue #1: Ordered 6/26. The bee box arrived 6/30. Everything else arrived in a box this afternoon, 7/7, due to weight limitations on the postal service side of things. Issue #2: The box that arrived today had EVERYTHING on top of the hat/veil and it was completely crushed. What you see in the pictures is the best I was able to straighten it up so hopefully it's usable. Makes no sense to put everything on top of a straw hat. Issue #3: The clip style queen cage is deformed (see pictures) and rendered useless and the inside base of the smoker is also missing a tab that holds the base up slightly to allow air to circulate. Most likely broke off while being stamped. The bee box is straight, sturdy, and of very good craftsmanship. The tools are all well made and of good quality. The gloves seem adequate. You really get a lot of bang for the buck. I'm just a little disappointed in the disregard to package the hat where it wouldn't be damaged and that the clip style queen cage and the smoker base are not as they should be. I'll update if I get the parts replaced and on performance down the road. ***Update 7/8 Top notch customer service! They sent a whole new package! 5 stars just for being one of few left that takes care of their customers!
