After months of researching hoods to replace our very old Broan hood, I happened on a magazine review recommending this Awoco hood. It seemed a perfect match for the constraints of our old 60 year old kitchen so we ordered one. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Installation was fairly easy, though I had to mess a bit with our existing ductwork. I used cabinet jacks to lift in in place securely and drilled the bottom of the cabinet for mounting. I chose to use flat head bolts down through the cabinet with fender washers and nuts from the underside. This made for a very secure mounting. The skinny screws and nylon anchors that were provided just didn't seem right for the job. Performance of the hood is fantastic with four levels of venting. Max is a bit loud, but sometimes you need to clear the air quickly, and the noise level is tolerable even then. The other levels are quieter than I expected. Lighting is good as well and the dimming feature is a real plus. The design of this hood is another great feature. It really augments the appearance of our kitchen.

I wanted to leave a review partly because I found that expert info on range hoods is pretty limited out there. I went back and forth on several models of hoods before settling on this one. I chose it because of the high CFM rating, I like the way it looks and I like the look of real buttons rather than touch panel. I needed something for under cabinet with the vent on top so it could pass through the cabinet above it. I have previously installed a duct for a hybrid microwave/rangehood. By far the hardest part of installation is running the duct to the outside. In my case, the stove is on an interior wall - but adjacent to an exterior wall, and I figured I could route the duct through the soffit above our cabinets. I opted to use 6" x 24" galvanized steel round duct to pass from the hood up through the cabinet, then inside the soffit I ran flexible aluminum duct to the exterior wall cap (it is rated for range hood use), both Imperial brand found at Lowes. The run length inside the soffit was about 5 feet and I had to make 3 turns to navigate the duct through. For the vent cap I used a Speedi-Products EX-WCHD 06, found on Amazon. Routing the duct through the soffit was quite challenging, I had to cut an extra hole in the dry wall on the soffit just to get my hand in there to navigate the duct through a labyrinth of plumbing from our bathroom on the floor above. Once I got the duct ran, I started on the holes through the cabinet. With the holes cut out, I tested the fit between the hood, rigid duct and cabinet before attempting to put them back into place. I found that making a slight inward bend at the back of the hoods vent outlet allowed it to slip past the seam of the duct more easily. I then installed the duct with a 6" hose clamp onto the flexible duct, and slipped the cabinet up onto it and ran screws in. With the cabinet and duct in place, I was ready to hang the new hood. For that, I took an old TV tray table and cut the legs to just the right height so with the table sitting on the stove, it would hold the cabinet a couple inches below the installation height. That gave me plenty of room to wire and get ready to mount. Wiring was easy, I did test the unit functions with the supplied plug before cutting and hard wiring it to the electrical that was already there. It might be worth noting the wires come out of the top of the unit, for me, not a problem because there was a hollow gap under the cabinet, but could be a problem for some cabinets without this space. When it came to hanging the hood, I drilled my own holes so I could mount directly to studs. They do include some plastic drywall anchors, but I've used those exact style anchors for other, lighter duty, applications and they are terrible, have had them pull out of the wall tearing the drywall around it, I wouldn’t trust them myself for something as heavy as this hood. I was able to mount to two studs by drilling my own holes and then attached the top of the hood to the cabinet above it. One small issue is that the actual width of the hood is about 29-1/2" so there is a 1/4" gap on either side of the hood. You don't really notice, but I though t it was odd since the old cheap hood was exactly 30" and fit the space perfectly. So, how well does the unit perform? I tested it the next evening by cooking steaks on cast iron. I love cooking with cast iron but the kinds of things I like to cook tend to make a lot of smoke, and the little vent we had before (which just circulated through a filter) basically didn’t help at all, the entire house would be filled with smoke every time I cooked, smoke detector blaring, really annoying. Then I'd have to open all the windows and let the house air out for a while. Now with the hood, it handled 3 steaks no problem, some smoke did escape into the rest of the house, but overall very reasonable, didn’t need any extra ventilation, I was running the unit on high. The next day I made burgers and bacon on cast iron which also produces a ton of smoke, again the unit performed amazingly, Yea you could smell some cooking had happened, but the amount of smoke that escaped into the house was more than acceptable to me. Cooking other things like eggs, I've done several times and you can barely tell anything had been cooked, where before you would definitely know, no matter what room of our house you were in that someone had just cooked eggs. On high mode, the unit is fairly loud, but I don’t think this is a major con, its mostly the sound of rushing air, and for me the priority is being able to cook without smoking up the house. I also checked outside while I was cooking, and you can really see the smoke being kicked around out of the external vent, which to me was a good sign. The lighting on the hood is really nice, much better than the typical appliance bulb that my other hoods have had, they are nice white LEDs and give plenty of light on and around the cooking surface. For me, this is a huge upgrade and I am very happy with this purchase, I highly recommend. I was very nervous about buying a unit not knowing how well it would work until installed and not being really satisfied with the info I could find on most of the available options. Hopefully this info helps you make a decision.

Nice quality stainless steel range vent hood. A bit heavy so requires two people to install. Great suction, easy to clean filters and amazing dimmable lights. Most of my cooking requires the quietest setting, but if needed, it will go up to a higher level and does a fantastic job. Has a 3 minute auto off for the fan if you want or you can immediately turn it off. As for the longevity of the stainless steel material using the recommended cleaning procedure, I cannot say at this time. However, it looks perfect in my kitchen and is a much needed upgrade in venting ability.

I bought this hood months ago but just installed it a few days ago. I wired it with a modified extension cord when I first got it to make sure it worked. Very good packaging and everything checked out. Hopefully this review will be helpful and not tl;dr Installation - I removed the plate that covers the vent opening from the back and tried to install it on the top, but a rivet slightly interfered with a cutout on the plate, and it wouldn't lay flat. I used a file to remove some material and it was able to install it. I also made an exact mockup of the vent using cardboard, marking where all the holes are (vent, power, rivets on top that would touch the undercabinet support strips) so I could transfer those to the cabinets and wall, cut where I needed to and made sure there was solid support to drill screws into. On installation day my helper couldn't make it, so I decided to install it by myself. I was able to do this because the backsplash wasn't in yet, so I attached a ledger board to the wall, slid the vent in, propped the front up with a proper length 2x4 and screwed it in. Easy. For the exhaust I installed a 90 elbow, an in-line backdraft preventer, then approximately 6ft straight to the roof, using 8" rigid duct. Regarding the backdraft preventer built into the vent hood; as others have mentioned it is flimsy and I suspect, not that effective. It has an 1/8' gap around its edge, so it's not completely stopping a backdraft. I was able to pull (rip) the metal flap out with my hands it's so thin. I advise you to remove it and use a better, in-line device. I will say the rest of the hood is beefy, heavy and well made. How Does It Work? To see how well it worked I used my wok to make stir fry and had the vent on the highest setting. It is quite loud on the highest setting, but I only used that for the few minutes I was cooking, then turned it down to a slower speed. It was so much more effective that the microwave vent it replaced. As long as you understand this isn't a commercial unit and not expect miracles, you should be happy. Lights - We do not like cold light, and the LEDs it came with are a very cold blue (6000k). Luckily, I saw another review who mentioned getting warm (4000k) LEDs from the manufacturer. I went to their website, sent an email and they responded the next day. Turns out, the product is listed on their website and is easy to order. I paid $30 for the pair and had them in about 3 days. Installing them was straightforward; remove the vent filters, reach in above the light and push it down. It will pop out, but it takes a fair amount of strength to do it. I attached a picture that shows the metal band around the light that compresses at its installed or removed. BEWARE - when you remove the existing light it exposes unfinished metal edges that are sharp. I, stupidly, didn't wear my thick work gloves and sliced my thumb and forefinger pretty good. Wear gloves! The warm LEDs - So. Much. Better. Picture shows cold on the left, warm on the right. Look at the drywall above the stove to see the color. Anyway, this is a good, solid well-made hood that does move a lot of air. Not whisper quiet, but not crazy loud either. I would recommend it.
