This has been a great DIY scanner for me since I bought it. I have a cheap code reader which does it's job fine but the more car repairs I do, I wanted something more versatile. I have used the battery and starter/charge tests and it appears very accurate. It was within a few hundredths of a volt compared to my Fluke meter. I really like the Ready test function that gives you all the info you need to make sure the car will pass inspection. I had a lot of fun going through the live data and seeing the health of the fuel trims, O2 sensors, MAP sensor, MAF sensor, etc. I tried out the multimeter functions as well and it seems fine for casual use. It's a nice little add on that may be handy. I think this scanner will give me a lot of good vehicle info I need for troubleshooting things down the road. The scanner is very easy to use and is very intuitive. The menus are simple and easy to navigate or back out of. The screen is bright and easy to use in the sun. I did return the first scanner I bought due to an issue with the placement of one of the soldered navigation buttons. The replacement unit's buttons all work and feel as they should. The scanner feels substantial in weight and toughness. It came with quality test leads, battery test cable, OBDII interface cable, and charging cable. The case is cloth with a double zippered closure. There is a pouch for some of the cables. The Autel logo is embroidered on the front which really looks good. The case is a little cramped after having everything out and then trying to fit it back in. Still it is a very nice accessory. The scanner auto starts when you hook it up to the car which is nice, but just make sure you power it off when you are done or you may have to charge it before you use it the next time. I'm not sure if it has an auto off feature. It seems to stay on a while until I shut it off. I disabled the beep on every button click in the setup menu. This got annoying quickly. If you work on cars now and then, and want something more versatile than code reader without breaking the bank, this is the sweet spot. It may work great for a professional as well. My dealership mechanics are now pissed of at me because of this scanner. Had my check engine light and my car wouldn't start until you jumpstarted it sometimes. Tried my old scanner and it was reporting a minor issue which I could drive around with due to the code interpretation.Decided to seek the opinion of the my dealership and I was given separate quotes in excess of $250+ for diagnostics reading and battery testing before the actual repair work if any plus parts etc. Did my research and chanced upon this scanner which had the most important tool everyone needs in their vehicle. The battery tester was the added incentive for me. Did my first diagnostics test and had two major faults from the code interpretation that could have damaged my catalytic converter. Carried out several readings and they all came back the same after every couple of days and decided it was time to go have it sorted. Used the battery tester and apparently my battery needed to be changed. No more jumpstarting after the battery change. Checked out the price of the parts online from the vehicle manufacturer and went to the dealership to have them order it cos I already knew the parts. After telling them I had already done a diagnostics scan and needed these parts to fix my car, I was told they would only fix it if they did their independent diagnostics scan to confirm and would give me a reduction for the scanning cost etc. As a check for my scan I agreed and it was spot on. I was given a quote for the parts which was in excess of $300+. I showed them the price from the car manufacturer's website showing the price online and I was told they had not updated their price list hence the error so I needed up paying for what I had seen online which saved me a lot. Now my car is running smoothly. It feels.good to have ideas about your car so you can ask relevant questions when you take to theechnaic shop. There is a lot of resources online from YouTube, google search, diy mechanics sites etc for interpretation of codes and parts changing before heading to your mechanic. Am not advising you to start fidgeting with your vehicle if you are not mechanically inclined but it helps to know what's wrong with your car before you head to your mechanic. I have just had it for a couple of weeks so will see how it holds up and update if need be. Would also advise that the software on the cd is also put on the website since cd drives are phasing out.     • Good first-line-of-defense tool for diagnostics
I've done a fair bit of diagnostic work in the past and have used a few different technician-level scan tools and automotive oscilloscopes-- the Snap On MT2500 (IE the Red Brick), the Vantage, a couple of OTC systems, the GM Tech 1 and 2, and some of the Sun and Snap-On engine analyzers. Let's get one thing straight-- the AL539b is not a replacement for any of these. At $89, it is not meant to be, and that's OK. It is a code reader/scan tool that can perform a couple of other diagnostic functions. It doesn't do any one thing spectacularly well, but it does enough that it still has a spot next to my Launch X431. That's saying something. As a scan tool, it lands somewhere between a typical entry level tool (like an ELM327 dongle and the Torque smartphone app) and a high-end device. It won't do bidirectional control but it will read and clear codes, view and graph live data, check I/M readiness monitor states, retrieve freeze-frame data, etc. A lot of functionality. Then there's the battery test feature. Attaching a pair of alligator clamps (supplied) to the unit allows it to test batteries, starters, and charging systems. So far I've only tested a handful of batteries, but it's a useful feature to have, especially in a tool that you're likely to have in your hand when you walk out to diagnose a no-start. My favorite part about this thing is that it has a built in scopemeter (sort of). It has a multimeter that will measure voltage, current, resistance, continuity, and perform diode checks. The readout is big and clear, which is nice. There is also a "scope" function that will measure AC voltage or current. It's not a true oscilloscope-- there are no trigger options and no user-adjustable timebase-- but it does give you a visual representation of voltage or current, which is awesome for something like a variable reluctance crank sensor or a TPS. In AC voltage mode, you also get maximum and minimum voltages, frequency, and duty cycle. That's a LOT of functionality for a sub-$90 tool. Down sides? Well, the peak voltage that the meter/scope can measure is around 30V. Probably not a big deal, but don't mistake it for a Fluke 87 or you'll melt it into slag. The scope is designed for quick diagnostics and does not have the adjustability of a true oscilloscope (or even something like a Vantage). The scan tool won't do bidirectional tests, but at this price point I'd be surprised if ANYTHING out there could. It's sometimes a bit finicky about finding modules, especially on really early OBDII stuff, and some of the trouble codes can be a bit generic. None of these things even come close to being deal-breakers, though. This is a lot of tool for the price. It won't replace a true scan tool or oscilloscope, but it will let a knowledgeable home-gamer or entry-level tech add a lot of diagnostic capability for not much money. It's also a great "grab and go" tool for more experienced users that want something quick and portable. UPDATE: I've had this tool for over a year now and it's still the first thing I grab when I'm trying to diagnose a no-start. I can check the battery, charging system, and scan for codes in just a few minutes. Still a tremendous value for the money if you just need basic diagnostic capability. UPDATE 12-2020: I just realized that this meter can't measure resistance (I never tried it until today-- go figure). The meter function has a continuity test that beeps, but at anything over 50 ohms, it shows an open circuit. This is unfortunate because now I need to carry a separate multimeter to measure, for example, a coolant temp sensor. This makes it a little less appealing as a grab-and-go tool for quick diagnostics. I won't knock a star off-- even without an ohmmeter, this thing is a rock-solid bargain-- but it would be really, REALLY nice to be able to measure resistance into at least the kOhm range. Unfortunately, you might really miss that ohmmeter function if you're diagnosing a CANbus problem. On a CANbus, there is a 120 ohm terminating resistor between the CAN high and CAN low line at each end of the network. Because the resistors are in parallel, a resistance check between CAN high and CAN low should be about 60 ohms if the network is intact. A reading of 120 ohms indicates that a terminating resistor, module, or conductor is open. But you won't be able to tell using this tester. Both good and bad readings are above the measurement threshold. You can still use the graphing multimeter to check the CAN high and CAN low networks one at a time (which is nice because you can actually see the data packets as the network is talking), but resistance checks are not possible. This is a shame because checking the terminating resistors is a quick way to test network integrity and can be really helpful if there is no communication. Keeping a multimeter around for resistance checks isn't a huge ordeal, but it's another thing to carry out with you when you go run diagnostics. Autel, you were SOOOO close to having the ultimate first-line-of-defense tool for diagnosing no-starts. UPDATE 4-2021: I was using this on a vehicle to monitor short-term and long-term fuel trims while I looked for vacuum leaks. The cable was barely long enough to allow me to keep the unit under the hood while I pinched off vacuum lines and poked around. What I did is to get a male-to-female DB15 cable, which will act as an extension for the cable that is included with the AL539b. I ordered a 6 foot cable from Amazon for less than $7 and had it the next day. Having another 6 feet of cable to use adds some flexibility for monitoring live data while under the hood of a car. BTW, I still find myself reaching for this more than my Launch X431 for quick diagnostics. The Launch has a TON more capability (it better, at 10X the price), but this Autel is quick and convenient to use for basic codes and data. It's small, it boots quickly, so far it's communicated with every vehicle I've tried, it's probably more durable than a tablet, and the display is nice and bright. ... show more

This device is a battery tester, a multi-meter, and an OBDII scanner. It can test both traditional flooded and AGM lead acid batteries. I have a Lexus hybrid equipped with a 12V Panasonic AGM. When attached to my old battery, this device immediately booted up and showed a 9.8V terminal potential, which unsurprisingly explains why my car wasn't booting up properly, with a blind spot monitor failure, blinking infotainment screen, a blank transmission indicator instead of a 'P', and no green 'ready' light. I then checked the battery CCA with it, and it reported that the battery needed to be replaced as its current was way too low for something that should supply 355A. I could've figured out from the voltage alone that the battery was on its last legs without checking the CCA, but that's not why this device is good. Two days earlier, after driving the car for an hour, the voltage was measured at 12V+, but this tester at the time showed the CCA was inadequate. I wouldn't have thought to replace a $300 Japanese battery when the voltage looked normal and thought my new tester must be wrong, but this device tipped me off that something might be amiss, and it saved me from potentially getting stranded on my upcoming road trip. As a volt meter, it's off by .1V compared to my Craftsman multimeter: more than accurate enough to measure lead acid batteries, but you might want to use something else when testing sensitive electronics. The OBDII reader has a built-in emissions readiness mode that shows a checklist of all the subsystems and whether they have fault codes. It also has live data, so you could plot your engine RPM, O2 sensor reading and other readouts. It doesn't have SRS and ABS subsystem features found on dedicated scanners, but it is more than adequate for most DIY jobs. The software that pairs with this device is a bit low-rent, and the update process should be easier, as it requires that you download two files from the manufacturer's website instead of a one-button solution, but overall, this is a very high value device that can solve many problems and potentially save a lot of money by not going to the mechanic all the time. ... show more

This is perfect for all vehicle owners, mechanics, mobile mechanics, etc. I’ve had mine for a year & a half now with zero issues. I just bought a second so i can keep on in my toolbox at home and the other at my toolbox at work. The multimeter is also very accurate and handy to have. It’s literally three tools in one. Go ahead and buy a decent scan tool, multimeter & battery/charging system tester. You’ll end up spending more and have to grab three separate items which will also take up more room in your toolbox/garage. ... show more

Autel says to update the unit when you purchase it. I did an update and lost the DVOM function! Wrote to Autel and here is there response. I re-did the update and everything worked perfect afterwards! Hope this helps..... "Hi Christopher, The AL539 does not get registered. Please try to re do the updates again and follow these instructions: go to www.autel.com (top of the webpage) Support & updates> firmware & downloads> update client> Download MaxiLinkII (top row, middle pic) Once the file downloads open it and install the program. When the program is successfully installed the icon will appear on the desktop that says MaxiLinkII. Now you will need to download the software update file pack. go to www.autel.com (top of the webpage) Support & updates> firmware & downloads> software update pack> Download the pack for your tool. Once this downloads open the folder and DRAG OUT BOTH FILES (.bin and .aut) to the desktop. This step is very important. Make sure the files are on desktop. Now open the program MaxiLinkII make sure you select your tool on the left side of the program when your tool is selected you will see the picture of your tool in the bottom left corner of the program. Connect your tool to the PC and put the tool in update mode by going in the tool's set up menu and update mode. The red box on the top right corner of the program will turn green when the tool is successfully connected and in update mode. You will see 2 boxs now on the program. One is a Update Program box and one is a DTC Update. In the first box click select file and locate the .bin file that is on the desktop select it and click open. NOW go to the second box below it and click select file and locate the .aut file select and open that. You will now see 2 file names in the empty text files. Please click the UPDATE button on the first box and wait for that to complete. Once that finishes click ok. NOW click the UPDATE button on the bottom box. PLEASE DO NOT UNPLUG OR SKIP THIS STEP.
