  • Shredder pulls paper into right corner
Size: 18-sheet Crosscut Shredder
When an 8in wide piece of paper is inserted, the shredder pulls it to the right corner of the machine causing that area to clog up. When that area is jammed up the shredder red light indicating "bin full" comes on even though bin is practically empty. I have to fold the paper in half to compensate for it moving to the right as it is being shredded. Narrow paper is not a problem. Otherwise, the shredder works fine.. ... show more

  • What I Should Have Bought Years Ago
Size: 20-sheet Crosscut Shredder
I have a home office, and this is the 3rd shredder that I've owned. The first was a real cheapy. When it died and I replaced it with a $70 machine I thought it was a major step up. The shredder sat atop a small plastic wastebasket. In order to empty the basket (which was quite often) you had to actually lift the shredder off and set it aside. That may not seem like much, but it was heavy and paper shreds would fall out and make a mess. It struggled to shred even a half dozen pieces of paper at a time and the noise it made was awful. When it finally died during an extended shredding session I decided that I wasn't going to make that mistake again. Thus I was willing to spend nearly 3 times as much for this machine. What do I like about this shredder? Almost everything. It's rated at 20 sheets, but I'm quite happy shredding half of that at a time, knowing that it's just cruising along. It's very quiet compared to my previous machines. Sure, it makes some noise, but it's not bad at all. I can easily carry a conversation and shred at the same time. The basket holds 7 gallons and to empty it you just pull it straight out by the handle and carry it where you need to go. It slides back into place very smoothly. It's even on wheels so it turns and can be pulled out easily if I need to. It's rated one level higher (P-4) in security for the cuts that it makes than my old one. To get any higher you need to go to a much more expensive "commercial" machine. I don't need that, and this was within my budget. The opening is made in such a way that it would be nearly impossible to accidentally get a finger into the cutters, but after a couple of shreds you learn the angle at which to feed paper and it goes right in. It's also got a safety feature that prevents it from shredding if a hand is lying across the opening. Probably not necessary, but nice to know. Credit cards and even CDs/DVDs can be shred by feeding through a separate opening for a straight-through path. I always had to cut them up by hand with scissors before, so I'm looking forward to this feature! And of course it's got all the standard things that you would expect, like overload/overheat protection, manual run buttons (forward and reverse), and bin full and door open sensing. You can turn it on and off manually, but if you just leave it sit after shredding it will automatically shut down into a very low power state. Feed some paper into it and it wakes up and shreds without having to push a button. Nice. If I had to find something that I didn't like, it would be that it's difficult to shred small pieces of paper. I keep a note cube of loose 3.5 x 3.5 inch sheets (nothing with gummed edges like Post-Its) that I like to use for quick notes. If I try to shred these they're just not long enough to get down into the part of the machine that will sense the paper and grab it to feed. A minor inconvenience. I can feed them through with other papers. I was a little concerned about how this would stand up to shipping. I needn't have worried. It was protected very well with the large styrofoam bumpers on all corners and the box even had straps on the outside to help keep it intact in case of rough handling. It arrived in perfect condition. I'm expecting that this shredder may very well last the remainder of my working life. I'd love for it to be the last shredder I buy. Don't forget to follow the directions on running a bead of oil across the opening after every full basket. A little maintenance goes a long way toward keeping these in top shape. ... show more

  • Eats paper like a monster
Size: 18-sheet Crosscut Shredder
I filled up the bin and it did not overheat with continuous feeding. Excellent shedder.

  • Really great shredder
Size: 18-sheet Crosscut Shredder
Been using this shredder a while now and it's runs perfectly. Hasn't jammed once since I bought it, and we use it a few times a week. I love that the bin is so large so I don't have to empty it too often. It's also much quieter than my last shredder, and has a long run time before overheating. I don't think it's overheated once with our normal use. ... show more

  • Don't Buy This!
Size: 18-sheet Crosscut Shredder
I really hate to say this, but as an engineer, I cannot ignore the obviouslyy bad designing of this product. Firstly, I want to clarify that when it works, IT WORKS SPLENDIDLY!! But the engineers who designed this somehow screwed up the Paper-Detection circuitry, which consists of an IR light source, and a IR detector. This assembly is spanned across the paper slot at approximate middle-point, and its purpose is to detect the presence of material in the slot, and start the machine. But when the paper is shredded, THE MACHINE IS SUPPOSED TO STOP. The engineers screwed something up in this area of design - either they over-current the emitter LED, or they fail in detecting the sensor, but bottom line is, after a bout 6 months, THIS UNIT FAILS AND RUNS IT SHREDDER MOTOR CONTINUOUSLY. I was prepared to make an attempt at fixing this unit myself, but as the Aurora Company provides NO SUPPORTING SCHEMATICS, it was impossible to diagnose the problem - at least at MY hourly rates. So I wound up throwing the unit in the trash, and buying another system form another manufacturer. I have looked at several of the other revues, and it appears that this is a STUPID ENGINEERING FLAW, guaranteed to eventually happen, so save yourself grief and look to another manufacturer. This unit is mainly a great design, but it all depends on this one circuit working, which it eventually does not. ... show more

  • Works for small home office
Size: 18-sheet Crosscut Shredder
Apparently, it’s very difficult to get quality paper shredders these days. The one I had a for a decade finally died. After much research, I decided on this 18 page shredder for the home office of a small business. What I like best about this shredder is it it is very quiet. And I have used it to continuously shred for up to 20 minutes with no problems. However, with regular sheets of paper the claimed 18 page amount was never met without jamming. It seems to work consistently well with 12 sheets, and for the price, this will work for my needs. ... show more

  • We are perfectly satisfied.
Size: 18-sheet Crosscut Shredder
We had already wasted a shredder, a few years back. We had a back log of old vital records that needed shredding. Now it is done. Machine was easy to clean and Lubricate. Per recommendation, i used a synthetic, non flammable spray lube. Its sight glass in the side of the waste bin is very handy, easy to look through and much appreciated. But beside that, when it goes past full, a sensor sees that and kills the motor for you. What ruined the old one was not knowing about all of the above needs. But the teeth in this one are stronger and sharper too. Its feed in slot seems intuitive in design, so that feeding it needs less effort than the old one we had. Before pulling out the bin, one should maybe run the grinder forward a little while to empty its teeth. That will prevent it dropping loose bits while taking out the bin of shreds. Pulling the bin also removes power from the motor, a very nice comforting safety feature that might address future absent-mindedness. ... show more
