I've had this shredder for 7 years which is longer than I thought it would last. It has finally failed but it has been a great shredder. I really like the microcut. I am getting another one. May as well stick with the one that works. And I make sure to have the sharpening and lubricant sheets.

I had an inch thick stack of documents that needed to be shredded so I put this to use immediately after it arrived. I had read some other reviews complaining that their shredder had clearly been used and re-packaged / re-sold. While reading the complaints I thought, "Wouldn't they test it before packaging it?" I know from my previous shredder that it's almost impossible clean all the little pieces of paper out of it because they get stuck between the gears. Sure enough, after opening my box there was a large yellow piece of paper on top indicating that they test every shredder before packaging it to make sure it works, and mine did have a couple of pieces of paper stuck in the shredding gears. Other than that it was perfectly clean and new. It chewed through my stack of documents in a couple of minutes. My old shredder (which was admittedly ancient) would have taken forever and overheated at least 3 times in the process. The shredded paper is basically like confetti (see pics) and it compresses down very well in the bin. My previous cross-cut shredder's output would be very fluffy due to pieces sticking together from not being 100% separated from each other and it would fill up the bin in no time so I'm relieved that this shredder completely separates the shreds. There is an "overheat" light on the top of the unit which is very convenient because if you use a (non-commercial) shredder for extended periods they will overheat and shut themselves down for a period of time to keep the motor from burning out. On my previous shredder you knew it overheated when it refused to shred anymore but there were no visual indicators. The product page claims that there is a "3 minute continuous run time with 30 minute cool down time." It took roughly 2 minutes to shred my documents, so I didn't get to test the cool down time but I didn't get the impression that it was ready to shut down. My old shredder would start to smell when it was about to shut down and there were no smells at all during the time I used it. I had an old credit card laying around so I tested the shredder on that and it chewed it up into confetti with no problem. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of this shredder. If anything changes, you better believe I'll be back to update my review :-) .

For light house hold use and probably also for light home office use this is a good unit. I bought the 6 page limit which for my purposes is adequate. When shredding its operation is pretty quiet. It does a great job shredding...I just dumped the first load and there is no way any one is going to go through that mess trying to piece anything together. I also shredded some old credit cards one at a time without any issues. On the down side (that's the reason for the 4 star review), the bottom of this unit is extremely thin...probably for cost cutting. As a result my unit came damaged from the weight of the shredder head that's packed inside the receptacle. The shredder head is well packaged, but it's too heavy for the thin plastic base. So before you discard your packing materials make sure the bottom is in one piece. If it's broken the plastic piece is probably in the bottom of the box. In my case fortunately the broken piece was small and all I needed was some clear packing tape on both sides to secure it in place and I was good to go.

I've been using shredders at home for many years. I've gone through a few of them. This shredder is the best shredder I have ever used. It far exceeded my expectations for an Amazon Basics product. I'm pretty sure it was also the least expensive shredder I ever bought. It definitely wins on bang (or shred) for the buck. I've been using this shredder for 4.5 years now and it still works as good as new. I do use the lubricating sheets on it regularly.

Not bad. Not bad at all. I wanted a shredded that I felt shredded things so small it would be impossible to put back together. This shredder fills this order and delivers. It takes a single sheet of paper and shreds it in over 1000 tiny pieces. I've heard of paper shredders catching fire but if you don't let it ever heat and lubricate the blades every time you empty the bin, you shouldn't have any problem with it. I had 5 years worth of mail I wanted to shred and this thing por formed marvelously. Approximately 4 bins will fill up a 13 gallon tall kitchen garbage bag. For safety reasons when you lift the shredder from the bin it shuts down. Great in case one forgets to turn it off when cleaning the bin. The slot where the paper goes is wide enough for paper, but not for adult fingers. Please be careful around children although the machine may not turn on for anything smaller than 1 inch or so. Keep in mind accidents can happen. Worry not about staples this thing will take care of that no problem. My only issue is you can only shred 6 standard pages at a time. Keep in mind the thicker the page is the less you will have to load into the shredder. Other than that the 6 page limit is not a big deal for home use. To keep the shredder running smoothly I recommend you buy some paper shredder lubricant. It's not expensive and your shredder will last a long time. Use it everytime you empty the bin. For the price I'd buy this shredder again. I hope my review was helpful. And if you decide to buy this item enjoy.

My wife and I had been victims of identity theft and had two credit card numbers stolen in the last five years, so we decided to get aggressive about protecting ourselves. I had been using a strip-shredder for a long time, but after seeing how easy it is for the dishonest people to reassemble those strips well enough to get some important numbers, I tried burning my old papers whenever we fired up the pit. But that was slow and tedious and still not guaranteed everything would completely burn. So I decided to try a micro-shredder that turns documents into tiny pieces. And boy, does this machine do the job. I was able to destroy thick files of old tax and financial records from 1995-2009 comprised of several thousand pages over about six hours and filled two lawn bags with confetti. And there was nothing on any of the pieces that had any possibility of being reassembled or readable. I love that the machine has its own safety features and shuts off when it starts to overheat from constant use. After constant feeding of about 500 pages the red light would come on and the machine would stop, but it only takes 20-30 minutes to cool down and restart so I could get back to task. Be sure to buy the shredder oil with the shredder. I noticed in the first day of shredding that the blades slowed down just a little, so I ordered the oil immediately. As soon as it arrived, I oiled the blades and they immediately started working faster, smoother, and more quietly. This machine has already been a great investment in our financial and identity protection.

Update in 2026: Somehow it kept on going even when I thought it was ready to retire in 2021. Of course, the poor ol' thing could no longer chomp down 6 sheets at a time like it used to; 3 at best, but it still did the job. After 10.5 years, It finally stopped working today and before I order it again, I wanted to leave a one final update here. Money well spent! Update in 2021: Finally, it's getting close to its retirement. Can't believe it lasted 6 years! I've tested its limits so many times and it has served me well. I am very satisfied with this shredder and I am going to reorder it soon. Update: It has been a year and it is still going strong. I have shredded buckets of papers in the past year and oiled it thrice. I can still shred up to 5-6 papers together and it doesn't overheat easily. Recently, I timed it and the overheat indicator came on after 19.45 minutes of nonstop 5-pages-at-a-time shredding. In the first two weeks of using this shredder, I did not uncover any issues with it. I have used up to 5 sheets at a time and it shredded them without showing any mercy. I have put it to a continuous use for about 15 minutes and didn't see the overheat indicator turning on. It's truly micro-cut and shreds the paper into very small pieces. Even though it has an easily removable bin, I put a trash bag in the bin just to avoid carrying the bin each time. Manual reverse function is neat and operates with no issues. It doesn't take-up a lot of space and overall, I like this purchase.
