  • Great to own a piece of my childhood!
Color: Rampage/Joust
Fantastic! Couldn’t be happier with this cabinet. The build was quick and easy with the included instructions. All quality materials were used even down to the screw covers. Both of these classic themes were my favorite games as a kid and very nostalgic to me. That is why I decided to go with this particular model. I have upgraded and modded it since with led backlights, coin doors, and buttons, but even the standard base cabinet and game selections pretty were good! ... show more

  • A fantastic home arcade, even if it isn't a museum piece
Color: Rampage/Joust
Arcade1Up (now Basic Fun!) cabinets have been a fixture in our house for years, so I went into this one knowing exactly what to expect. If you're comparing it to an original commercial arcade cabinet from the '80s or '90s, it isn't the same experience. The buttons, joysticks, cabinet materials, artwork, and overall feel aren't commercial grade. You're not getting the heavy-duty controls or the tank-like construction of a real Joust or Rampage machine that's survived decades in an arcade. You're not going to get the smell of 1980's dust when you open the back. You're not going to see rings of stick from a soda spilled in the 90s. The nostalgia is there, but devoid of the gritty reality of being "aged." But that's also missing the point. These cabinets are affordable, lightweight, easy to assemble, and easy to maintain. One person can put one together in about an hour, and one person can move it around the room without needing a furniture dolly. For a home game room, family room, Airbnb, or kids' play space, that's a huge advantage over owning an original several-hundred-pound arcade cabinet. Their compact footprint also makes them much easier to fit into a game room, office, or basement than a full-size commercial cabinet, especially if space is limited. PCB boards are notorious weak points on these things: but if you add a usb powered computer fan bay, that keeps air moving over the PCB and extends life. If it dies after a few years (I've had one burn out), there are infinite ways to repurpose this cabinet: getting a replacement PCB from the manufacturer has historically been possible, there are aftermarket kits that you can use to add additional games and forego the original PCB. Heck, you could even install a PC, upgrade the switches and turn it into something more formidable later on. Starting with an inexpensive but well designed cabinet makes all that possible, plus you can use it as is for as long as you want. This particular cabinet is one of my favorite releases because it includes two absolute classics, Joust and Rampage, and even lets you swap the illuminated marquee between the two games depending on which look you prefer, which is a new feature that I have to imagine will become more common with future offerings from the company. The rest of the game lineup is excellent as well, including Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat, Defender, Gauntlet, Toobin', Root Beer Tapper, Paperboy, Klax, Wizard of Wor, and Bubbles. Aside from a couple of the more niche titles (e.g. Bubbles and Klax), it's a collection that offers hundreds of hours of replayability. Even the lesser-known games add variety, making this a collection you can come back to for hundreds of hours without getting bored. It's hard to go wrong with any of the Mortal Kombats. The controls are lighter than true arcade components, and deserving of some gentle criticism, but they're responsive and enjoyable to use. Kids will not tell the difference, and they stand up to aggressive mashing quite well. While the materials aren't commercial grade, mine have held up well to regular family use, and the cabinet feels sturdy enough for the environment it was designed for. More importantly, everything is plug-and-play. There are no complicated emulator menus, software configuration, or troubleshooting sessions. Turn it on, pick a game, and start playing. If it encounters some sort of issue along the way, which is rare to the point of non-existence, the solution is to turn it off, count to ten, and turn it back on. That solves 99% of everything. For anyone chasing nostalgia without spending thousands of dollars on original arcade hardware, these cabinets strike a fantastic balance between authenticity, convenience, and value. They're simply a lot of fun to own. Side note: if you have an AIRBNB, or even a small doctor's office, this is an intuitive and maintenance-free instant fun machine. ... show more

  • Turn your rec room into a retro arcade - no quarters necessary!
Color: Rampage/Joust
This is my third Arcade 1UP console, and it’s another winner. We don’t play them a ton, but when we have people over it’s such a draw. Classic games we remember and love from our Gen X youth. The graphics and sound are exactly like the originals. The console and cabinet are colorful, and eye catching. Nothing makes a rec room look cooler than full size arcade games! I’m 5,3” and it’s about as tall as me. I will say, Arcade 1UP machines take time and attention to assemble. And for every game we have put together, we have had to find some how to videos on YouTube along the way. But it’s worth the time and patience. One step you absolutely do not want to miss is turning on the motherboard before you put the last panel on. Or you’ll have to remove it to turn it on. Once you do that, an external button powers up/down. I dream of owning just about every Arcade 1UP console. This one was listed at $741 when I ordered it. That’s steep for the brand, and I later saw it had dropped to $500ish. If you LOVED Mortal Kombat, this might be worth $500ish for you. I’d value it closer to $399. That’s what I paid for Pac Man and this one is comparable in terms of quality and gameplay. Once you have one Arcade 1UP you’ll want more! ... show more

  • Fantastic Arcade Cabinet with Classic Games and Swappable Marquee/Controls Overlay
Color: Rampage/Joust
This Arcade1Up machine brings back a lot of nostalgia and looks great in a game room. The cabinet design feels much more premium than expected, and the light-up marquee adds a nice authentic arcade feel. The controls were responsive, and the included Midway games provide a lot of variety. Rampage and Joust are both very fun to revisit, and the WiFi leaderboard feature adds a modern touch. I really do love the swappable marquee and controls overlay. I'd love to see this be a feature for future offerings. I have a total of 12 Arcade1Up units and they have never disappointed me. This Rampage/Joust unit is getting a surprising amount of playtime for me so far. Assembly takes some time, but the instructions were manageable overall. Overall, this is a very enjoyable arcade cabinet for retro gaming fans. ... show more

  • Not a Real Arcade Cabinet, and That Is Mostly Fine
Color: Rampage/Joust
Set expectations before you order. This is not a full size arcade machine. It is roughly three quarter scale, and the difference is real when you stand in front of it. If you grew up on the originals, your muscle memory expects the control panel to be higher and the screen to be bigger. It is not. Taller players and anyone with a cranky back will feel the lean after a couple of rounds. The riser helps and I would consider it required rather than optional. Assembly is IKEA territory. Particleboard panels, cam locks, printed graphics, and an instruction sheet. It goes together fine and looks decent once it is standing, but nobody is mistaking the construction for the plywood and laminate slab that a real Midway cabinet was built from. Take your time squaring things up during assembly and it holds together better long term. The light up marquee is the piece that sells the illusion from across the room. But not bad for the money, tbh. What you get in exchange for the compromises is the good part. Fourteen Midway titles on one machine with no swapping boards, no rewiring controls, and no hunting down a working monitor chassis. Anyone who has owned an actual retired cabinet knows what that means. No cap kits, no burned in CRT, no smell of forty year old cigarette smoke baked into the wood, no heat pumping into the room, and no weekend spent troubleshooting a power supply instead of playing. The games themselves run well. Rampage and Joust are the headliners and both feel right. The rest of the lineup fills out the era nicely. The controls are the weak point relative to real hardware, since the sticks and buttons are lighter duty than what a commercial cabinet used, but they are responsive enough that you are not fighting them. Serious players will eventually want to swap in better parts, and people do. Wi-Fi leaderboards are a nice touch that gives some reason to keep coming back. Chasing a score against strangers scratches the same itch the initials screen used to. For a family room, game room, or basement setup this hits the mark. It takes up a fraction of the floor space of a real cabinet, plugs into a normal outlet, and does not require you to become an amateur arcade tech. Supply your own bubble gum, hairspray, and denim jacket and the eighties come back on their own. Great memories of a lot of quarters wasted at the mall! Four stars. Deducted for the scale and the furniture grade build, not for the concept. If you want authenticity you want a real cabinet and all the maintenance that comes with it. If you want the games and the fun without the ownership headaches, this does the job. ... show more
