Model: 110. Tank: 90 gallon saltwater FOWLER tank. I run the 110, along with two hang-on Aqua-C Remora protein skimmers (the original, medium size model). I have two 8-9 inch long fish, both purchased in 1988 and thus now 30 years old. I have limited mobility in my right leg, so under-tank sumps would be tough for me to manage. Instead I rely on large hang-on (HOT) products that I can reach. I believe the 110 has the highest flow rate of any HOT filter on the US market. I use the included sponge filter and ceramic media, and add a mesh bag with PhosGuard to absorb phosphates. Nitrates run 20, so my skimmers are cleaning up adequately after two BIG fish, and the AquaClear keeps particulates down and the water clear. I only clean it when flow rate slows, which is every four to six months. Because replacement parts are not stocked at my local fish store, I bought a second 110 unit to use for parts if needed. So far, after five years of use, the only non-original part presently operating in the filter is the U-shaped siphon tube, which broke because I dropped it (not a defect). You can buy some individual parts online, but the cost adds up, and for me, buying a whole complete unit (albeit sitting in the original box in the garage) made sense, since you have instant access to any needed part. The cost of a 110 at the time I bought unit #2 was $20 below today's cost, so for me it was a bargain. ... show more

I really like this filter, but there are a few things to consider. First and foremost, a pre-filter sponge is a MUST for smaller fish. The intake strainer is way too large for small fish. One day after install I had an adult neon tetra and adult khuli loach sucked into the intake tube. Sadly they both perished. :( Second, the filter is not silent. My old Bio Wheel filter was virtually silent. The Aquaclear initially rattled some. I took it back apart and re-seated the impeller cover and that stopped the rattle. Easy fix. The motor does still have a slight hum. Honestly for the GPH it's somewhat expected. If you want complete silence this might not be the filter for you. The main perk of this filter to me is the large filter media box. I can add plenty of media and filter floss for polishing (use loose floss in a media bag or buy sheets of floss and cut to fit). Polishing is a huge thing for me. My water tends to be slightly milky without polishing. So this filter allows me to do that with ease. Another selling point for me is that the water is forced through the media from the bottom up. Rather than passively flowing through a thin filter like most use this filter actually forces water through your media. So it's way more effective overall. Quiet, moves a lot of water, and easy to clean. At first I thought this filter was just "ok" because the water wasn't dirty, but it also wasn't crystal clear. But after reading several aquarium forums I learned about people using 100% poly-fil with their filtration. I decided to try this method before going with a canister filter and boy am I glad I did! I cut and placed the poly-fil after the mechanical filtration (sponge) in two layers ( just folded over) to the same length as the sponge and added the other filters ( carbon & bio). The poly-fil will compress so you do not have to worry about everything not fitting once you assemble it. After about 30 minutes I had the clearest water ever! The poly-fil will not affect pH levels and was purchased at a local wal-mart for less than $5 for a 36" x 45" roll. Update: Also great for saltwater filtration. Just ditch the ceramic rings. ... show more

Let me begin by saying that my wife and I are novice fish keepers (hobbyists?). We started with a 10 gallon in April 2020, quickly moved to a 20 gallon because we loved it so much and wanted more fish. Finally in June 2020 we made the decision to upgrade drastically to a 55 gallon tank. So I began researching filters, filter media, etc. Our 10 and 20 gallon tanks were overstocked and had basic filter cartridges. I wanted the very best for our 55 gallon. I chose to do a higher filtration for my tank so I am using the filter that is for 60 to 110 gallons. This filter was not my first choice. I ordered something else and after receiving it and looking it over I was not satisfied so I returned it and settled on this one. So then came the decision to customize my filtration. I am using 3 layers of foam filter sponge. Coarse, medium, and fine. I am also using Fluval Biomax Bio Rings and Seachem's Matrix. I treated the water with Seachem Prime and Stability for a week and slowly added our fish over a few days. I used StressGuard when adding more fish. We have added more fish every week since we have set this up and have lost no fish. The ammonia levels are where they should be and so are nitrates and nitrites. The water is crystal clear and is absolutely breathtaking to look at. We could not have asked for more. We come home from work at night and don't even bother turning on the TV most nights. We just sit and watch our fish. I have read several reviews from people stating that it is too loud. I do not find that to be an issue. My Marineland filter was louder than this is. Don't let those reviews sway you from purchasing this filter. ... show more
