  • Skeptical but pleasantly surprised
Size: 18-Inch, 5-Blade
I've been eyeing different push reel mowers for over a year now and what stopped me from getting one was the lack of what I consider to be a highly rated option out there (~4.4+ stars) This was about the best I could find and I just wasn't sure it would work very well. Well, I finally decided to drop the $87 and give it a shot because my current mower (a corded electric 20" Greenworks) I picked up last year is getting to be too much of a hassle carting the cord around. It works great and I don't have much to complain about but constantly repositioning the cord easily adds 10 minutes to an otherwise ~30-35 minute job for my lawn. While I think a battery-powered electric mower would be the optimal option (certainly the fastest) I think they're just too expensive. Not to mention if the battery needs to be replaced a couple years down the road, the batteries alone can cost $150 apiece. So, enter the 18" 5-blade "American" Reel Lawn Mower. I've only given it one workout on the lawn but it worked fine. I didn't time it but I'd guess it went maybe 5 minutes faster overall than my 20" Greenworks. I expect once I get used to using it, it will save me close to 10 minutes over using the Greenworks, cutting the mowing job down from ~45 minutes to close to 35. It's not difficult to push, but if you have lots of sticks in your yard, I can definitely see that becoming an irritation because they'll stop the blades until you clear it out. The cut won't be as clean overall compared to a motored lawnmower. You will look back over a section of lawn that you mowed and there will be blades sticking up here and there that got pushed over rather than cut. There will be areas you'll need to go over twice because instead of it just being a few blades, it will be decent-sized swaths that got pushed over and clearly need to be mowed again. The blades don't turn when you pull the mower back toward you, so it's only going to cut moving forward. Also, pulling the mower back toward you can be a pain because the mower will often tilt backward forcing the blades and big wheels into the air as you drag it along the tiny rollers in the back. However, I actually had less problems pushing through tall thick-grass patches than I did when using my Greenworks mower, which oftentimes died getting through these areas. Something I didn't really account for before purchasing it was the distance between the outside edge of the wheels and the edge of the blades. It's pretty considerable, so the closest you'll be able to get to an obstacle (such as a fence) is probably 4-5" or so, requiring you to come back through and clean up with a weed eater. This is in contrast to most motored mowers with blades that usually clear out a path close to the width of the wheels, leaving much less edging to clean up afterward. I didn't find it to be much of a problem, though, because my weed eater clears out an area about 10" in diameter, so if I'm clearing an unmowed edge 1-2" wide or 4-5" wide, I still get it all in one pass. I never used the bagger on my Greenworks mower because I don't like stopping to empty it every 5 minutes. I always leave the side chute open but the downside to this was that it regularly got clogged up and would launch out giant piles of grass clippings that can smother and kill grass if you don't spread it out afterward. This reel mower eliminates that problem but constantly and evenly distributing clippings as it goes. Lastly, it was pretty fun to use. I'm sure I'll get tired of it just like any other mower, but it's a nice change from the normal style mower. Pros: Far cheaper than pretty much all mowing alternatives Environmentally friendly -- no gas, oil, battery charging, extension cord hassle (saves even more money) The scissor action cut is healthier for grass than standard mowers tearing action Can be fun to use Quiet enough that you could use it at night and not bother neighbors Evenly distributes clippings as you go Handled tall grass better than expected Cons: Doesn't produce a perfect cut. You'll have to accept that it won't be perfect -- blades will be left standing and unless you want to make 3 passes over your entire lawn, this is a reality. I think it still looks quite good. There's a large gap between the cutting blades and the sides of the wheels, so it will leave a decent-width edge that you'll have to weed eat afterward. Sticks and such will stop the blades, forcing you to clear them out before continuing. No mowing in reverse -- I recommend getting used to always moving forward rather than back and forth like you may be accustom with standard mowers. ... show more

  • Excellent alternative for gas mower
Size: 18-Inch, 5-Blade
I bought this reel mower because both my gas mowers had issues at once. It was literally cheaper to buy a reel mower than get my other mowers fixed, so I said "What the heck, let's try it." I went with the 18-inch so I had to do fewer passes. Pros: Assembly was easy, and by late morning I was mowing the whole yard (less than a half acre). What a satisfying feeling to mow under your own power! The design is super simple and really quite safe, much safer than a gas mower. You can adjust the height to crop grass pretty short. Adjusting the height is quick and easy. It's also easy to push. I find it fun, and it's far quieter than a gas mower. I can listen to music at a normal volume while I mow. Cons: The mower clips the grass by bending it forward with a flat bar, then the reels rotate forward against the bar (a little like the blades of a pair of scissors) to cut the grass. As a consequence, the mower cannot cut grass or weeds above a certain height (maybe 4 inches) because they bend below the bar before the reels can cut them. So you need to cut or pull anything too tall. Tiny sticks and twigs will jam the mower in a heartbeat, so you have to clear your yard of those before cutting. The mower's design means it cannot mulch like a gas mower can. It doesn't shred up leaves and long stems at all, so you may have to rake up that stuff if you want that clean, pristine look that is so satisfying. Thick, lush grass (of any height) is a pain to mow, and you may have to push harder in thick grass. Lastly, the mower misses a few blades of grass here and there. I find that to get the most even cut, I need to do a rough pass, then do another perpendicular to the first. Then it's perfect. Verdict: If you are even considering going gas-free, buy this mower. In my view the cost, ease of use, and simplicity outweigh what you'll miss from a gas mower. I plan to go gas free from now on. ... show more
