  • Quality & Usability Was Much More Than Expected
DENALI Brushless 20 V 13-inch String Trimmer w/4.0Ah Battery and Charger I’ve been looking for Lithium powered lawn equipment for some time and never came upon the right balance of quality, performance, and price until now and this was with some reservation about buying an Amazon sponsored brand. Use: For general use around the home and property and gardens Need: Something light weight, well made, low to medium power, reliable and strong battery, and easy to maneuver for my wife of 5’2” I had four (4) incentives: 1) Black Friday savings. At retail I would still consider it a top contender. 2) Amazon Denali is a rebranded SKIL product with a 20-volt 4-amp battery rather than a 20-volt lower amp that came with the SKIL version. I’ve owned excellent SKIL power tools in the past. 3) The 20-volt power is a good compromise between the lower voltage (under powered) and higher voltage (overpowered for general purpose yard and garden work, heavier, more costly) and the 4-amp rating is excellent compared with the 2 and 3-amp you often see. 4) “Bump” Trimming Head. Learn to use a bump trimming head and proper winding of the trimer string. Don’t buy trimmers with proprietary swiveled cutters and other cutting style “things” that break off when you hit an object. Tips flying is hazardous. They become expensive to replace and later unavailable. One (1) Assembly Modification I made one modification when assembling the trimmer “hinge”. I’m used to high quality metal framed prosumer lawn equipment where a jointed shaft would be disastrous, so I very cautious fastening the screws into the nylon (? It is very well made) “hinge”. Attached find an image showing my minor “hinge” modification in order not to over tighten and deform the hinge housing and risk failure. I added 2 M3 washers (red circle) on either side before tightening the retaining screws so as to prevent any gap between the top and bottom of the housing. You can tell (feel) when using a hand screwdriver (do not use a power driver) when the torque is just right otherwise tightening the 2 halves together would risk failure at the joint. You will see that this essentially matches the “spacer” on the opposite end (bottom) of the hinge. It would have been ideal if they included spacers, but best not to leave a gap between the two. Performance & Handling It was great. Much more performance than I expected. While I did not sense any variable trigger speed control (the trigger has to be depressed fully to prevent the safety “off” switch triggering), it does have a low and high-power switch. I found both power levels and speed ideal for trimming around the house, retaining walls, fences, along garden edging, etc. without destroying things. I was surprised that it did a perfect job clearing the roots from overgrown sod on our paths walking stones making the task easy. This would be a heavier workload. A mix of generic, moderate, and heavier cutting got me about 30 minutes at half battery power indicators. Very nice performance. Its always nice to have a second battery, but you should be fine with just one for a modest sized suburban lot. Precautions ALWAYS wear EYE PROTECTION, long sleeves and long pants. If your cutting “off angle” the trimmer guard will not protect you from flying debris. Example if you’re tilting the string for edging or for other cutting. I’m left-handed so I learned to tilt the head in a particular direction to avoid debris. Experiment first. The double-sided safety interface is excellent though very sensitive if you release the trigger slightly. Takeaways A fine performing product that is well thought out and well made. Fit and finish of all the parts were spot on. At retail always do comparison shopping, though it still seems a top performer even at retail. Discounted it's quite a bargain. ... show more

  • the battery is defective and now "unavailable"
I didn't get to to use the trimmer until after 30 days from purchase, so I can't return it. The battery will not charge. At first it charged a tiny bit, just enough to turn the trimming head a few times. Then dead. Then will not charge. Just gives red light on. A real rip-off from Amazon. I am sorely disappointed. I usually order many, many tools from Amazon but will have to rethink this in the future. Id a replacement were available I'd just bite the bullet and buy it. But it's not available and they "don't know when". Maybe it's a great tool, but with a dead, un-replaceable battery it's a complete piece of junk. Plus the button you have to hold in in addition to the actual trigger is an absolute b-tch for anyone with any degree of carpal tunnel probs. Tomorrow I will either find a way to bypass it or I will destroy it. ... show more

  • Whats more important Power or your back. Enough power takes a corded model,or gas.
Well designed tool. Easy to use on low great for trimming close on that setting. Very gentle and excellent cut.[thats on low]. [High] has good power. But it so light weight and balanced, it cuts back on power. Find another battery if you can. I did. Look for a generic that fits a skill weed eater the same size. Skill, makes this brand for amazon. it a good choice. ... show more

  • Much more power than I expected
What a beast for the money. I bought the used like new version for $70.00. It was a new version repackaged, likely a return Item. Quite a lot of power in this thing. I have been using a smaller Ryobi the past few years. I have a corner lot and my back fence line is a smooth 200 ft plus curb side edging of 200 ft. It used to take a hour plus to do it with my ryobi. This thing powered thru it in 30 minutes. Its true the battery only lased 30 minutes but I had just enuf juice to finish. Its also light wt and easy to use. The bump feeder worked flawlessly. Great alternative to the much higher priced units for a small or medium sized yard. ... show more

  • not great
first, it was severely delayed... Ordered around thanksgiving, received AFTER christmas. The battery life is not great. This should be shipped with at least 2-3 batteries. The device is too long with no way to adjust the length. I'm 5'10" and it is really awkward trying to use this thing. The handle with all the controls is all the way at the back of the device, and there is NO way to just keep the thing in the "on" position. You have to keep a tight grip on the "on" button to keep using it and that is really awkward since (as I've mentioned) the control is all the way in the back of the device. Add to this the fact that this thing is not all that light, and it can lead to some sore joints and shoulders. There is no edging capability/tool and the string deployment mechanism is not all that easy to use either. So, in summary, I believe this device leaves a lot to be desired.. poor battery life, questionable design, lack of adjustability/capability. ... show more
