The 3-star rating is because this particular ukulele had an unplayable 6th fret on the fourth string. When striking the string, it made a buzz rather than a note. I don't think Alvarez is to blame, but the distributor, as they apparently don't keep their stringed acoustic instruments in a temperature-controlled environment. That's too bad, because it otherwise played very well, and the sound very good. I have tried to get one from Musician's Friend, but they are 'backordered' and take a very long time to fulfill the order. I opted for a Kala and paid extra for it. I bought it through Amazon, but it came from an actual stringed instrument distributor that keeps them in a controlled environment. I have another Alvarez, a tenor ukulele, that I got some time ago from MF, and it plays like a champ, so I'm not slamming their instruments. Update: I had to return the Kala as well, as it had buzz problems, too. Musician's Friend finally got their Alvarez baritone ukuleles, and I got mine. Bought this for my wife, our first uke. Went with baritone because the tuning is the same as the first four guitar strings. It looks nice, the fit and finish are fine. Its light as a feather. As a guitar player its easy and fun to play, with a warm and folksy tone. There does seem to be a little bit of string buzz, and there are no strap buttons, which seems like a negative to me, but otherwise so far we are really enjoying it. ... show more

Love it! Perfect price and perfect craftsmanship. No damage on arrival. It was boxed 📦in side another box for protection. That's a Big plus! I recommend this instrument fir all ages.

I just wish it had a button on side to add a strap to. I cant stand while playing bc there is no way to add a strap. But it has a nice warm sound.

This is a pretty nice-looking ukulele for the price, and I like that the strings go into slots (easier when replacing). Also, I'm not a uke expert, but it sounds nice to me. It's got a warm, pleasant tone. However, I tried two of them, and they both buzz on a couple of the strings. It appears that the sting is too close to the fret, so it occasionally hits it when vibrating. This kind of thing really annoys me, so I sent it back. After two tries, I'm out of patience. I love the sound of of this little tenor. I have an expensive wooden tenor that does not compare to the nice warm sound of this Alvarez. Very well-made and durable.

It sounds as good as my Kala KaBG it's just not as pretty, but it cost 50 bucks less than the Kala. It has a wonderful tone, great sustain, and stays in tune. Based on my satisfaction with the Alvarez Baritone, I plan on buying a Alvarez Tenor.
