About Allen Bike Racks Started out of founder Dick Allen's garage in 1967, Allen Sports is committed to producing the highest-quality, easiest-to-use bike, parking, and storage racks on the market. Dick Allen, a onetime aerospace engineer, opened Allen Sports after building a prototype bike carrier in his Lincoln, Massachusetts, shop in his free time. The bike enthusiast tested the trunk-mounted carrier--made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding)--on weekend excursions. Shortly afterward, Allen took his design to consumers, moving from local to national sales by 1971. Today, the company owns more than three dozen patents and operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and sells products in more than a dozen countries around the world.

  • Good framework - needs to be built upon
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
Like many other commenters, my purchase was to fill an immediate need without spending tons of money on a product, sight unseen. The positive reviews convinced me to give it a try. Agree with the compact convenience - not having to store a large, weirdly shaped rack is a benefit. Installation is also relatively easy. At first sight (in the pics) I knew there was no way I would use bare metal clips on my paint job, so I bought silicone pads to put in the clips. IMO, the product would be greatly enhanced if the clips were already rubber/silicone-lined. I also put silicone pads under the rubber parts that go on the window and (for me) on the license plate. Just not looking to scratch the car, y'know? The bottom clip assumes a solid edge at the bottom of the bumper to hook onto. Since my bumper is essentially plastic, I had to pull the clip behind the bumper onto the actual frame. I got the two-bike rack, and although there are grooves for each bike in the frame, they're so close together I honestly can't see how two bikes would actually fit. But I just need the rack for one bike, with a contingency of maybe going riding with someone. The straps that hold the bike in place are strong and sturdy. But the bike is then left dangling, potentially (probably) to slam into the car at every bump. So I used ties to fasten the frame of the bike to the lower portion of the rack, and used padding (ok, old socks) on the bike pedal next to the car. With these tweaks, it all worked out. But it would be good for Allen to consider: - adding lining to the inside of the metal clips - adding something on the frame to stabilize the bikes so they don't swing freely. You get what you pay for, and I'd be willing to pay more for a rack with the above suggestions included. ... show more

  • Pleasantly amazed!
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
I was honestly hesitant about buying this bike rack, particularly given the comparatively low price tag. But I couldn't justify spending hundreds on something I only needed a few times a year, especially for a bike that's old enough to vote. Since I drive a Prius hatchback, I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to find an affordable option that would work with my car – until I found this little gem! PROS: - STORAGE BAG: I love the fact that it comes with a storage bag, to keep it compact and organized when not in use. Without the bag, it would be more challenging to store and transport, particularly with all the straps involved. - EASY TO ASSEMBLE: The instructions are remarkably clear and comprehensible, with options for multiple body types. It took a little bit of study the first time to get it assembled and attached to the car (mainly because I was paranoid about doing it wrong), but from then on, it's a piece of cake. - SURPRISINGLY STURDY: I was wary about the stability of any folding/collapsible model, but when it's snapped into place and strapped to the car, it doesn't budge! – UP TO 2 BIKES: There's room for 2 bikes on this rack, although I've only used it for 1 so far. But I like that I have the option for a second bike. CONS: I only have 2 minor quibbles, but they're not big deals to me, particularly as the rack is so high quality yet affordable otherwise: - STRAP FRICTION: This one is kind of unique to the design of my car than to the bike rack, but worth considering. The straps are your standard heavy-duty ribbed design, which makes them super strong, but it also means that the straps could damage the finish on your car if they're allowed to rest against the body at any points of tension/friction. The design of my car necessitates that they rest at the point where the hatch bends from a gentle slope to being perpendicular with the road, so to avoid wear or friction damage at that point, I simply wrapped that portion of the straps with electrical tape, which seems to have worked great. - NOT AS STRAIGHTFORWARD FOR SLOPING CROSSBARS: If you're transporting a male bicycle with a [nearly] horizontal crossbar, you won't have any issues. But if you have a female bike or one with a heavily sloped crossbar, you're going to have to get creative to keep it from riding too high on the rack to be stable/secure or so low so that one side drags along the ground. There are adaptors you can buy separately to accommodate for this, although I haven't tried any of them personally. CONCLUSION: Well worth the price, and I've actually gotten a lot more use out of it than I'd initially anticipated. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Made it work on 2019 Explorer
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
I really didn't want to spend the money on a trailer hitch when I was never going to tow. The vendor does not say that it will work with a 2019 Ford Explorer, probably because the roof rack does not come with side rails, but I bought those rails for 90 here on Amazon and presto, now there is something to hook onto. I used all the top and side straps unaltered from the vendor, but the bottom one only reached plastic parts of the bumper, so I swapped it for shock straps to reach something solid ( an exhaust hanger ). So.....I figure those slats are good to have no matter what, even if I couldn't make the bike rack work, but I did get it to work, so way more affordable than getting a hitch and a hitch mounted bike rack. ... show more

  • Could be better
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
Your bike really needs to have specific bars, not all bikes will fit and it is hard to tell unless you have the rack at your house, so it is a hit or miss, one of my bikes fit, the second one only one side was on the bar the back side I had to zip tie, not a safe thing to do but the park is 5min from my house. ... show more

  • Pressure on Mazda CX-5 back window
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
It did the job with my CX-5. I chose to hook to bottom of door rather than under bumper. No issues occurred but I don’t feel totally comfortable cinching down straps with back window as a primary pressure point. Used extra slack in bottom strap to loop around bike frame to hold it to rack body.

  • Ease of installing and removing from the vehicle
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
I needed an easy to use lightweight bike rack for my Honda CRV. When I got this item it indicated that the 2020 CRV Hybrid that I have was not supported but I decided to try it anyway. And after multiple uses I cannot see why it is not supported. It works great.

  • Easy to use
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
I love how easy it is to put on. Drove over a couple hours and it didn't even move. The only dislike is I can not use my backup camera and all my sensors go off like crazy just trying to back out.

  • Works perfectly and as expected!
Style: 2-bike Pattern Name: Rack Color: Black
Easy install and holds my bike securely to my 2022 Challenger. If you have a car made of plastic, you might look at something else, but if your car is made of metal, it will be perfect! Quick shipping!!!
