Bought this bike rack because we were going on a road trip & wanted to bring the bikes for more outdoor things to do. I am also always bringing the bikes back & forth to our campground & having to load them into the bed of the truck can be annoying. When I was looking at the reviews for this product I saw a bunch that were geared towards SUVs & only a couple for pickup trucks. Here's my review after taking one test drive with this bike rack. 1st I have to say it was easy to assemble & seems pretty durable. I liked how the rack folds down & then can be moved away from the tailgate. When I lowered the gate it does rest on the bike rack & I wouldn't recommend standing on the tailgate while it's resting on the rack, but it does allow you to get the Tonneau cover off if you have one. From there you can climb into the bed of the truck. The 1st time I did this it was without bikes, so it was rather easy. Once I got back from our 20 minute test drive I tried lowering the bike rack down with 4 bikes on (pic attached). You might want to have 2 people for this since the rack is pretty heavy with all the bikes & needed some pressure to get the pin out. Also I recommend having someone guide the bikes down so they don't slam. In the end it worked, but will take a little bit more effort. Yes, raising the rack back into place is more difficult, but it can be done. Now the process of actually putting the bikes on. My one boy's bike is oddly shaped. Of course this was the 1st bike I tried to put on and it was a bit of a challenge. That is until I figured out that the mounts for the bikes rotate, which turned out to be a huge benefit. Once I got it figured out I was able to secure the bike nicely to the rack. I have attached a pic of how I had to rotate it & turn it upside-down. This also turned out to be benficial for the other bikes since they're all shaped a bit different & being able to rotate the area they mount allowed for the bikes to be secured well. I read that some bike racks need a bar for bikes, like female angled bars, to be attached correctly, but I didn't have an issue putting all 4 bikes on. Once the bikes were on and secure I used a tie down strap to secure all the front wheels. This would keep the handlebars from moving & swaying during travel. Now we set off on the 20 minute drive from our campground back home. The road getting out of the campground is a bit bumpy, but I didn't have any issues with the bikes. The remainder of the ride was mostly highway, going about 75 mph. The bike rack & bikes held up great! Finally, the security feature. I really like that I can lock the rack into the hitch. It was easy to tighten & seemed to do a good job at securing it. That doesn't keep somone from stealing the bikes off of it though. What I did was bought a 15' security cable & lock. I wound the cable around the bikes & used the lock to secure it to the hitch. I feel with both these measures out bikes should be pretty safe. At this time I give this bike rack a 5 star rating. If for some reason I have anything to add/change I will update this review. We are about to go on a road trip (about 3000 miles) so I should know more about it's durability then. UPDATE: This thing went 4000 miles without a single issue. At times the speed limit was 80 mph & I was worried after seeing some reviews about the arm bars bending. I bought reluctantly bought the 4 bike, security locking version of this bike rack almost exactly 3 months ago. I say reluctantly because one or two of the previous reviews about complete product failure (bike rack completely becoming detached or arm completely bending) sort of scared me. Also, I wanted one that could hold 4 bikes, but as other have mentioned, this will not hold 4 bikes. However, for the price, I was okay with that. I decided I would just go ahead and use it for 2 bikes. I wanted one of the Thule or Yakima "stand up" bike racks but thought I would save some money buying this one. After our last trip, I definitely regret that decision. Where to begin... In 3 months I've now used this rack a total of 6 times. Twice locally (under 20 mile round trip) and 4 times out of town (~200 miles round trip). That's the extent of my experience with it and I will probably not be using it again. I will go back to removing wheels from my bikes and putting them in the back of my hatchback. Pros: The price. Ease of installing. I do not leave the rack on the car. I put it on and remove it after every use. It's easy to install. The locking mechanism works great. The other reviewer who said the rack completely detached from their vehicle and dropped on the highway...I can't see how that's possible if installed properly. It would have to be massive structural failure. The reviewer who said the arm bent? I can't see how that would be possible either. The rack is sturdy. I had my 50 lb downhill mtn bike plus my wife's not so light of bike on there for a total of about 90 lbs of bike for multiple 200 mile trips. No issues. Cons: There is absolutely no way this rack holds 4 bikes. No way. The only way you could fit 4 bikes on there is if they were all small BMX bikes and you did not care that they were going to rub and scrape against each other the whole time. I use the rack for 2 mountain bikes and use every other "spot". Even doing that, I have to place the bikes just right so that the handlebars fit through the spokes of the other bikes wheel. In addition, this styie of rack just does not hold a mountain bike with modern geometry (steep angled top tube) well at all, in my opinion. Because of that top tube angle, the bikes tend to sit at about a 45 degree angle on the rack, front wheel hanging below the bumper of the car and rear wheel nearly above the roof. The bikes are not quick and easy to get on and off the rack. It takes some maneuvering. You have to spin the little "saddles" to the side so that your bike can pass over them and get to the position it needs to be and then you have to lift the bike up and turn the "saddle" into place so that the top tube sits into the saddle. And you have to do this twice, once for each arm of the rack. If that makes any sense. We went for a ride with friends yesterday who did have one of those Thule stand up racks and when we finished our ride, they had their bikes in the rack, secured and ready to go within 10-20 seconds while i was still fiddling around with mine. After a minute or two, my friend asked me if I needed any help. And finally, what even prompted me to write this review, which I don't do very often, the rack somehow gouged a divot in my brand new bike. Picture attached. Very first time using the rack, we went out of town. Bike was on the rack for about 100 miles. When we got to our destination, I pulled the bike off and noticed it had scratched my literally brand new bike. I couldn't see how it was possible because where the bike was scratched, it was at least an inch away from any part of the rack that could scratch it. See picture #2 in my attached pictures. Though angry, I chalked it up to my own error. I didn't know how it could have happened, but I just accepted responsibility. This past week, doing the same exact trip, I methodically put the bike on the rack and made sure to double check to make sure i had it seated nicely in the rack and thought there was no way the rack could touch my bike in that spot. I still don't understand how it's happening but when we arrived at our destination and went to pull the bike off and the "scratch" was even worse. I went all the through the paint of my bike and literally scratched away the metal. See picture #1. That is a little smaller than a dime. On my brand new bike. The bike hasn't been crashed. It sits alone against a wall in my garage so there's just no way it was anything other than the rack that did it and I still can't fathom how it's doing it. The closest piece of the rack to where this scratch is located is plastic so i can't see how plastic would do that to metal but I don't trust the rack anymore. I checked to see if there was any part of the 2nd bike (a pedal??) that could have been rubbing against it in that spot but it's not even close . The only contact points between the two bikes where the handlebars and tires. I refuse to use it any longer. It's even rubbing a little on the seat tube of my wife's brand new bike but where here's is making contact, again on the plastic part of the saddle, it has more of a smeared scratchy look that i would expect from plastic rubbing against painted metal. Beyond that...picture #3 attached shows the wear that has already occurred on the "saddle" where my bike sits. That's the amount of wear that has happened in 3 months and used 6 times. Picture #4 shows a cracked piece of plastic on one of the saddles. I'm not sure if it was shipped this way or if this happened sometime in the last 3 months. It's one of the saddles that I don't use so I didn't care but my daughter pointed it out to me one of the times when i was installing the rack on the car. Anyway, in conclusion...the 4 bike rack does not 4 bikes. 2 bikes max. This rack is fine if you have some older bikes that you don't care about potentially getting scratched. It's sturdy enough and I wouldn't worry about the other reviews that said the rack fell off their car or the metal arm completely bent. I can't see how that could possibly happen. But if you have brand new bikes that you care about, I wouldn't use it. If anybody is interested in buying a used rack for cheap, reply to the review and we'll work something out. ... show more

Hi, I am a novice avid cycler that have used a wide range of bikes and equipment. I have purchased different versions of this rack. What I like about it is the price point, at less than $200(Depending on which version), it’s a great deal for what you get. The tilt-over levers are easy to use and feels much nicer than comparable racks from different brands. I insert the base into the hitch receiver much further in that the detent is pass the hole on the receiver. This creates a very stable system, which is what you want when carrying multiple bikes or very heavy ebikes. I usually have the locking wedge right at the end of the receiver hole. The locking mechanism is very nice as well as it locks the rack into the vehicle and prevents it from rocking and making noise. The rack is constructed of heavy steel, which makes it very sturdy but heavier than aluminum racks. My only gripe with this rack is the straps, they are useless for holding down the bikes and do not feel confident driving highway speed with them. What I ended up doing is using bungee cords to pull the bike downwards to keep them in place. I did this by looping the bungee at the crank arm/pedal to the receiver chain loops. Another thing I did is tighten all the hardware so that the pieces fit snugly to each other and use chain lube to keep them from binding. With this, the rack is dead quiet. ... show more
