  • Review of Motorized Awning by Aleko
Size: 10x8 Color: Blue
Purchased this item for use over a rear patio door that gets strong sunshine up till about noon in the summer time. Overall it's a fine product, but I ran into a number of problems during the assembly and operation of the awning. The awning came in three boxes, the main 'frame', motor, and awning in selected color and size. Following the instructions makes for easy assembly, up to a point. They they get a big vague and you have to really think about the process. In my case, I was missing some screws but supplied my own with no issues. The awning comes with the manual crank on the left. It's generic for all their awnings so to add the motor, you needed to remove that assembly. That's when things got tough. The motor had no assembly instructions at all. And, I wanted the motor on the right, not the left. After reviewing a bunch of videos I found on YouTube, I was able to make something work. But without instructions, I was left with a bunch of left-over parts from the Motor box. Aleko's own video shows these parts, and never once shows how they are used. I suspect the motor might be so generic that it's used on higher-end awnings that need these extra parts. In placing the motor on the right-side, I had to swap the right-hand round shaft attachment over to the left-side and remove the manual crank. Bolts needed to mount the motor come from removing the manual crank. Since then, I've encountered a clunking noise whenever the awning moves in or out. I discovered the round shaft attachment is a bit sloppy inside the main tube. I think I have a simple fix for this. I sent email first-thing when I discovered the missing screws, and about the missing motor installation booklet. First business day afterwards, I received a 'sorry' response, with a promise to refer this to the parts department. Five days later, no further response. I've since emailed support about the clunking noise. And included a photo of the problem fitting. No response. The remote control came with it's own directions. There is a step that tells it to expect the motor on the left or right side. It got confused but I left it thinking the motor was on the left (default) so with some adjustments I got the extension and retraction stops set perfectly. Now the remote control buttons are reversed, but I think it makes more sense this way. I've added my own labels to the remote. Pro's - Cost effective - Fabric looks to be good quality - Motor looks to be good quality and with a long power cord Con's - Main tube has to be assembled, so it tends to bend more than a single-piece tube - Front bar has to be assembled, and it bends quite a bit from the tension of the fabric - Lack of clear instructions regarding placement of 'blocker' and 'arm-bar link' parts - Lack of clear instructions regarding motor installation (online pdf's and video's were minimal help) - Support, like, where is it? ... show more

  • Factory misasembled parts, worse than bad instructions.
Size: 16x10 Color: Blue/White
I have assembled and reassembled and reassembled but not yet installed my 16X10’ awning due to the fact that, even though not mentioned anywhere on their website, an additional 4 brackets are needed to hang it from the soffit (with tax and free shipping $119.00 from Amazon). So this a review of SOME of the assembly issues I had but not mounting or operation. I have written instruction manuals and followed instruction manuals hundreds of times and I think this one is one of the worst ever written. 1. Roller assemblies were factory installed backwards. Something that you don’t discover until you are well into the assembly process. Requiring THE FIRST disassembly, correction and reassembly. 2. The instructions tell you to have a person on either end of the roller and roll the fabric counter clockwise. If I’m on one end and rolling counter clockwise the person on the other end will be rolling clockwise. So which end should be the counter clockwise end??? That’s for you to figure out but don’t get it wrong or you will be disassembling it again. 3. Following the instructions online and on the printed instruction TO THE LETTER, to what should have been completion, I found I should have installed a roller bracket half way through the assembly. It is a part that is packaged separately along with its own instruction sheet with NO mention of it in the main instruction book. So on to THE SECOND disassembly correction and reassembly. 4. Well I think I have it together now, having scratched the paint with all of the disassembly, correction and reassembly. I guess I will know if it works once the additional, not mentioned as needed, hanging brackets installed and the awning tested. 5. To be continued! 6. After assembly and mounting I noticed the bar that carries the valance was upside down. The instructions did not point out this possibility. I noticed one of my neighbors had done the same thing. I took it down flipped the bar from end to end and reassembled it again. 7. The unit is up now and seems to work well except for a popping noise on the nearing end when we retract it. 8. For the price the unit is not a bad deal but the factory misassemble and really bad instructions take away from the value. I raised my rating from 1 star to 3 based on the product and price. I had to ignore a lot to be able to do it. ... show more

  • Installation Patience
Size: 12x10 Color: Sand
The initial quality seems to be decent. I’m still struggling to get this installed. Directions were very vague like others have mentioned. Mounting to wood siding and I had to run to the hardware store for bolts. The kit only includes bolts for concrete which is annoying. Getting the frame put together took patience along with the fabric. Missed the roller support and had to dismantle to install. Direction steps could have a better organized flow so things aren’t missed. Installing the motor was also not clear. It seemed like you need 2 bolts from the manual crank - but those are too long to use with the motor assembly. Messaged company for clarification and waiting for a response. It seems I may need to go to the hardware store for 2 shorter screws. Will update review after we have this installed and used it for a bit. I’m hoping the frustration for install will be short lived and the enjoyment of the awning will overshadow the installation headache. I would say im a handy and can do most home projects with ease. If your not handy, find someone who is to assist. ... show more

  • Nice awning but could use better instructions
Size: 12x10 Color: Sand
This is a very nice looking awning for the price. One big problem though is the assembly instructions. The instructions for installing the motor on the right hand side we’re not very clear. It is set up for the motor to be installed on the left. Finally got it all together and mounted above the door wall, and am very pleased. Be prepared to receive a kit you will need to put together. This awning comes in 3 boxes…it does not come already assembled. Love the fact that I can control the awning with the push of a button rather than using a hand crank. It sure makes it a lot faster and a lot easier. ... show more
