I normally don't do reviews, but this great product deserves one! I researched for awnings for a long time, including looking at well known brand-names, before buying one and I'm SO glad I choose this 10' x 14' Advaning! This awning is well made with quality materials and has the great advantage of being able to adjust the awning's pitch up or down WITHOUT standing on a ladder. (Routine use of ladders at my husband's and my age is NOT a best practice!) Our local jack of all trades carpenter and his assistant took exactly 3 hours to install it - from uncrating it to carting the empty shipping carton to the curb for pickup, and that included their watching Amazon's posted video of how to install this awning plus a second video I found on Google that shows how to install an awning on vinyl siding which we have. In addition, I followed the advice in the second video and ordered a 5 pack of the Builders Edge vinyl siding mounting blocks on Amazon which are used so things like light fixtures, etc. can be mounted flat on vinyl siding. (They arrived in 2 days! Perfect Timing!) Our carpenter also inserted small cut pieces of wooden shim blocks between the vinyl siding and the inside of the mounting blocks, so that the plastic mounting blocks would not buckle in when the screws that hold the awning brackets were tightened into the wall studs and this worked like a charm. This size awning comes with 4 sturdy mounting brackets so we had 1 plastic mounting block left over which I will be using to remount our door bell. We ordered the manual unit for a number of reasons, including cost and not having to worry about how to retract the awning if the power goes out. It is a bit more difficult to turn the hand crank rod to extend it than I was expecting, but it's still doable, even for me at 5' tall and age 68, and I expect to get better with practice. Also, our carpenter told us that the installation was a lot easier and faster than he had expected. And, WOW, this awning made a HUGE difference today in the 95 degree sunshine. It was easily 15 degrees cooler standing under the awning, verses standing on the open deck area. Now we can enjoy our hot tub at high noon without being burned to a crisp! I've included photos of the extended awning as well as photos of the Builders Edge mounting blocks in case they will be of assistance to prospective buyers.     • Weak crank handle
Awning was easy to install. Getting it delivered was a nightmare! But I blame the delivery company. On first attempt to retract the awning, the crank handle broke in half. Didn’t require much effort for it to break.

    • Five years after installation, still the best

We bought and installed this awning five years ago, and given our complete satisfaction, it's past time to leave a review. Summary: With a South-facing back deck, in full sun all day every day, all year long, we needed shade to make outdoor sitting more comfortable and keep some of that fierce sun out of the dining room. This awning has done the trick, and we couldn't be happier. We had a local contractor handle the installation, which posed some head-scratching but manageable challenges, given our vinyl siding, but for five years the manual retraction mechanism has worked well and all parts including the fabric, have endured both hot summer days and occasionally fierce New England winters. The mechanicals require occasional minor lubrication, and you'll want to be diligent about closing the awning at night and in inclement weather; other than that, we think you'll find this to be an effective, low-maintenance enhancement for your outdoor living! I was really nervous about ordering something of this size and price without being able to see and touch it. However, the other awnings I was seeing or getting quotes on were double the price for the same materials. I pulled the trigger and I have to say we absolutely lucked out. The colors were vivid (we bought the yellow/blue/silver) and the material high quality. It was study and went up without complication- though you'll need two (2) people and I highly recommend you hire someone with familiarity. We opted for the manual retraction because getting electric to it was difficult, not to mention I felt like that would be the first thing to break over time. That said, if I had to do it again I would order the motorized because retracting it is really hard. I work out 4 times a week and I have to stop halfway through retracting this thing and rest. You might think "oh, I'll just leave it out" but know you can't do that- wind could wreck it (or any awning). I do not fault the manufacturer for this as I know any large awning will be a chore to reel out (easy) and back in (much harder). Overall, I highly recommend! Don't get ripped off by name brands that cost 2x or 3x more- it just isn't worth it. ... show more

    • Nice unit with one drawback

I have the 14' x 10' awning. The product appears to be very well made with all the necessary brackets and stainless bolts and nuts. I installed the unit without too much effort other than having to try to find studs through Hardie cement siding. Stud finders don't work through that stuff. The main drawback so far is that the manual says not to keep the awning open during wind or rain. I wish that was clear in the product sales information. My plan is to keep it open all the time except for when we want sun on our balcony. I believe the issue is that the only support is from the wall and the leverage on the brackets with added wind and rain weight might cause problems. This is very similar to the awnings used on RVs, but those typically have support posts for the other side. I plan to add support brackets connected to my pool screen to take to the load off the wall mounts and keep it up most of the time. We'll see how that works long term. The only other comment I'll make is that the manual operation works easily when extending it, but is fairly difficult to retract. I suggest the getting the motorized unit if you plan to extend and retract the unit frequently unless you are getting one of the smaller awnings. ... show more
